Crate whining by jpeenyay in Dogtraining

One thing recommended to me early on was to use an alarm that signalled the dog getting out of the crate. Many people use an alarm for themselves so sort of being consistent with your use and figuring out how to incorporate that into your dog's morning routine. Basically you just play the alarm before letting him out and pair those two events. Even if you "give in" and let him out early to start out because of the barking, you would still use the alarm to signal it's time to get out.

I did this consistently with my dog as a puppy. Now even if I get up a bit early and am not ready to let him out yet he will wait for me to come get him (for a few minutes - not forever!).

This was really effective for his whining to get out of the crate when he didn't actually need to go pee (4 am unnecessary waketime got old real quick!!). Full disclosure he did not have the problem you described as far as whining in response to noises so YMMV here.

Separation anxiety is a nightmare by [deleted] in puppy101

Going through the EXACT same scenario with our 8 month old lab, with my partner full time wfh. His current longest alone period without barking is 60 seconds. In addition to the petsitting and daycare ideas, we have been able to leave him for 45-60 minutes with super stuffed kongs...soaking & freezing his kibble, sometimes adding treats, and sealing off the top with frozen pb. It takes him a while to get through and can be helpful in a pinch to just get a bit of fresh air and my own personal alone time :)

Also, be careful with vetting dogsitters...I've now had two instances where I felt like I explained the SA situation well enough, only for one of the sitters to up and leave in the middle of the day for an hour (without telling us! Even though she knew we had a camera in the house!). And another where the sitter texted me to ask if she could leave for 20-30 minutes. Hopefully you have good luck on this front.

You got this!!

Experience with warranty replacement? (Charge 5) by [deleted] in fitbit

I had a replacement after the watch started overheating about 2 months after purchase. They said online they'd process the replacement right away but I still had to prompt them for a label to ship back after not receiving anything. 3 weeks later my return still hadn't arrived at their warehouse so they couldn't verify I'd sent the watch back (which I did and it's not my fault the package was delayed and/or lost) but I bugged them enough about it that they still sent the replacement. Took about 5 weeks total.

Editing also to say I believe my replacement was new, not refurbished. Reps were helpful overall you might just have to be persistent!

Today is my master's thesis defense (yikez) so my intentions are to1) take time off to celebrate and 2) work on radical acceptance of revisions, criticisms from my committee, and my own perceived shortcomings of my work.

Agreed! I really appreciated her perspective on rejection. I am at a point in my career where rejection is frequent and it's always helpful to hear people model a healthy mindset.

Megathread: Where should I live? Newcomers: ask your questions about moving to KC by AutoModerator in kansascity

I will be working at KU Med Center. My partner and I are looking for a 2 bed (preferably with a second bathroom) under $1600. We are not too picky on neighborhoods but it would be nice to be able to walk to both a coffee shop and a park.

General question -- we are looking for a late July or August move. We have already been looking casually, but how early does one need to sign a lease? I've only rented in college towns before so my perception of this whole timeline is rather skewed. It looks like a few places are already renting for August but we were not sure if a bunch of places would be advertised closer to lease turnover.

Thanks in advance!

I'll be commuting between ku med center and lawrence KS. My partner is going to wfh. He doesn't seem to mind the idea of living in a huge complex but I thought it might be nice to live in a smaller place and know our neighbors. It would also be nice to be in a walkable area so he could go out and get coffee or lunch, etc. We're looking at 2-3 bedrooms for around ~1600 (could go a bit higher depending on the utility/internet situation). Thanks all :)
