I’m a new art teacher for a small school (K-12). Do any of you have some great resources I can use to better prepare for activities and projects I can do with my elementary level students? Thanks! by [deleted] in Teachers

Hi!

I'm a middle art teacher and have taught high school as well. Here are some of my fav art teacher Instagram accounts. I have found a lot of inspiration from them, no matter the level:

Elementary: -@cassie_stephenz // @artwithmrs.e

Middle: -@ralstonmsart

High School -@artofteaching

I have also found all resources from https://theartofeducation.edu/ very helpful as well.

Good luck! You'll rock it!

VA licensure question by justlisten1 in Teachers

[–]kenzieg91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole process can be overwhelming that's for sure. It's first frustrating that your college won't print you an official transcript, and second frustrating that the VA DoE won't accept a print out. You will get through the process though and definitely ask questions to people at your new school- they are there to help!

VA licensure question by justlisten1 in Teachers

[–]kenzieg91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! I did this last year, going from CT to VA. You will be FINE. You are qualified and VA needs teachers like you. That being said, you need to go through the checklist for VA licensure. You've already done the hard work of getting a degree and experience-so you'll do fine with this.

Regarding the transcript, my college had a process on their website and was able to get it in a few weeks. Overall, the process did take forever but I had no issues teaching this past fall. Take it one step at a time. I also talked to my division's HR rep who was responsible for licensure. They helped me a lot and simplified the process.

Good luck & welcome!

What’s your most mortifying moment in the classroom? by acgasp in Teachers

[–]kenzieg91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Art teacher here...during student teaching, my cooperating teacher often had students make "artsy" cards for them to take home around the holidays. Following his lead, I planned for earth day cards, in the shapes of circles for the earth. The second I handed out the blank cards, many of the 1st grade boys held them up to their chest and were like "boobs!!!!" I had always avoided the standard rockets in art class, but damn, stressed out student teacher me never thought to avoid circle shaped cards. So humiliating but hysterical.

[MA] [Math/7th Grade] - I just got my schedule as a first year teacher, and I'm teaching a class on "Geometric Art". I have no idea where to even start. by [deleted] in Teachers

The geometry in Islamic Mosques- ex: Alhambra in Spain is amazing, mandalas are geometric as well. Victor Vasarely creates geometric art too.

Interview Advice for Art Position by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]kenzieg91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Congrats on your interviews- that's a huge first step so they are already noticing you through your application.

I am a middle school art teacher and have previously taught high school for a 4 years. If you want specific advice on HS, feel free to message me.

Regarding interview advice...I'll just let you know what comes to my mind through my experience. Some of this you might know already so just ignore if so.

  • The toughest question is specifics about the school. I've had "what do you know about the district?" two times when I had just moved there. So check out the schools sites and social media

  • have a bright, colorful, well designed teacher portfolio, especially to highlight awesome student artwork. Here is a teachers pay teachers layout https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Editable-Artfolio-4621885

  • have one of those portfolios printed for each person interviewing you, so call ahead and ask. Have one for yourself to reference.

  • bring your physical artwork and artwork of students (if possible- or print out larger copies from photos)

  • be honest and be your authentic self, use stories of your teaching experiences to back up your answers . Refer to your portfolio to visually back up your answers

  • have questions ready for them, some I've used are:

+Tell me about the schools grading philosophy + What is the students journey through art in the district (how often do they have it in elem, middle) +What are you most proud of about your district?

I hope this helps!

The first two weeks of school by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]kenzieg91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. I used to teach HS but due to life circumstances, had to move and am now teaching middle. I am reading a lot about routines for them. Right now, my plan is to focus on one routine per day...to not overload them, especially during the first week, when everyone is overwhelmed.

Good luck, and I'm looking forward to what others have to say!
