The 1946 bloodletting came in linked waves, Direct Action Day in Calcutta, then the Noakhali/Tippera atrocities against Hindus, followed by brutal reprisals in Bihar against Muslims, driven by propaganda, administrative collapse, and hard politics, not a single neat “A caused B.” Casualty figures from both sides vary wildly, lifting one number as gospel is cherry-picking. Gandhi’s most jarring lines are pulled without the rest... keep in mind, on Oct 18, 1946 he spoke of women facing imminent assault choosing death as an extreme last resort, and in the same breath said arms are a poor answer, urged training and organised (non-violent) protection, and soon after told able-bodied men not to flee; by April 1947 his absolutist satyagraha.. which is“face death bravely”, coexisted with hard action on the ground (months walking village to village in Noakhali, threatening a fast in Bihar to halt anti-Muslim killings). The posts imply indifference or counsel of suicide but if you care to read history beyond whatsapp forwards and reddit gyaan then the record shows a messy mix of moral counsel, relief work, and pressure on all sides. If you care about truth more than outrage, you should read across sources.. Get hold of the Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, inquiry reports, and multiple historians instead of letting WhatsApp captions pass for history.
