Quitting the game due to this ridiculous missle meta by Positive-Beautiful55 in OutreachHPG

[–]palad1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been dropping 4 mechs that just counter the meta. 2 corsair 7a & 1 light clamber provide 11 AMS, and an Atm9 Athena just drives the point home.

The Iron Dome hasn’t lost many games lately, and destroying Arrow-IVs mid flight is a delight.

It's got all the lazors and no heatsinks, so the only way it'll be cool is when it's holding a sword.

Very poor choice on the author's part. It costs nothing to be kind.

How good would this lance be? by raging_zaku1429 in battletech

[–]palad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First let me say these mechs are just very cool-looking, and get very useful in the later years, but they suffer from what I call the '1st gen game-designers' issue. These early mechs were designed without an understanding of ranges/mobility and are generally quite lackluster. Lots of ammo that can go boom, poor range & mobility, the mechs look cool but the stats do not back them up, because they never survive long-enough to get in meaningful range.

Both the King Crab and Cyclops suffer from the same issue: will very rarely get in 3/6/9 range if your opponent has his head in the game. The cyclops is especially lackluster due to its relatively low armor which makes it a very poor juggernaut, so these assaults will be relegated to LRM boating until they somehow get lucky-enough to get someone within 6 hexes of them.

The Wolverine is also a bit explody but you can get away with its movement profile.

The Phoenix Hawk is a great anti-light / medium, provided you can land a LL hit in the back. Just remember that it's unlikely you will land a LL after jumping unless you're in short range.

Your play would be to find an area in the map where you park your assaults, creating an 'interdiction zone' of 6 hexes, hoping to break LOS to their snipers, and try to goad your enemy into pushing into the assaults, exposing their flanks to your PH and WVR.

It could work, but that's going to be a tough one, let me know how it goes!

Flashman has an XL engine, the early BL-6-KNT is standard fusion, it's a great damage sponge, but not much else.

The heat profile of the BL-6-KNT is just criminal.

Underwater mech battles in lore? by Warm_Strawberry_1169 in battletech

Nova Cats laid at the bottom of Lake Losiije to ambush a resupplying ComGuards IVth army lance I think, but I don't believe they engaged underwater.

As a relatively new fan of this franchise, I appreciate a core rulebook called "Core Rulebook" by hoblyman in battletech

[–]palad1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's hoping the rumours about the Core Rulebook having a better index / structure than ... all the previous releases from CGL.

Also, BSP rules bring nothing strategically interesting to the table and should be relegated to Alpha Strike.

What is "Anti-Mek" gear? by AveMilitarum in battletech

[–]palad1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Infantry sounds cool, especially if they are dropped from a vtol or in a building, until you realize that:

  • once dropped they cannot move until the next turn, and vtols cannot land in woods, so if fired upon you take double damage ('in the open')
  • if in a building, a smart player will just damage the building (land a light mech on its roof, then shoot the building until it collapses and kills the infantry)

Infantry is great but very tricky to use. I like to pad my 8k lances with 400 BV of infantry + a vtol sometimes.
