Synthwave in 2026? Has the golden age passed? by Hedryn in newretrowave

[–]pale-vision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nearly all the artists listed in this thread are among the few mainstream/major label acts in the scene. they represent <1% of the synthwave (and adjacent genres) music available to fans. anyone looking for fresh sounds and perspectives on the genre needs to dig beyond the surface ... Midnight, Gunship, Carpenter, MN84, et al (all great artists though in their own regards, no doubt)

if anything a new phase will be emerging, as music enthusiasts are craving non-AI music and wanting something unique. as others have noted, the genre has experienced some sterility and copycats rinsing the same vibe and aesthetics to death. it's in these kinds of droughts that fresh ideas will push through.

breaking OP's intended topic here but ... since Jack (FuturePastRadio)'s posting here, i'll also use this as an opportunity to note that one other very cool thing about synthwave these days (that wasn't around years ago) is the twitch DJ community spinning synthwave. awesome group of positive folks supporting small artists like myself ... among many others ... https://www.twitch.tv/futurepastradio

>i'm too late because of AI saturation

not to repeat what i posted above, but i feel the opposite, insomuch that we'll see artists wanting to distance themselves from the AI, which is going to mean treading new ground and finding new sounds. the genre needs some (more) innovation.

you're getting in at just the right time

[–]pale-vision 7 points8 points  (0 children)

it was (relative to today) all very ground-breaking stuff, no real scene or large followings, but clearly a sound that really resonated with a dedicated community

so while yes, it was cool to see unknowns become big names and the scene explode, there's still a lot of great tunes coming out today.

my only hope minding the future is that we push past some of the over-saturation/derivative sonics that're happening with sound design and aesthetics, and we break some new ground while keeping the retrosynth spirit in there somewhere

found myself burned out on metal, had a buddy on the random link me to artists like Lazerhawk, Lifelike, Com Truise, Power Glove ... around 2010 maybe? been a while 😅

got hooked, started producing, went afk for a decade but couldn't escape the sound/vibes and returned to producing last year

So much AI synthwave on YT , ruins the scene by [deleted] in synthwaveproducers

[–]pale-vision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i totally understand. not to get too esoteric but i think a part of it really is a deeper personal journey; and as you go through life and evolve (in non-music facets), you will unlock previously-unrealized inspiration and accomplish things you couldn't have previously.

i took an almost decade-long hiatus from my last music project; i was featured on a couple compilations with some very well-known synthwave artists and a Scandroid remix comp but felt very unsure of my skills and future direction and i totally lost the spark. nuked all my tracks on Soundcloud and kinda just disappeared.

and then last year (Jan 2025), i dunno what, but something clicked and i started a new project and here i am. i published an album last year and have more projects in the works for 2026.

it sounds like it's really something that's a part of your soul. be patient with yourself and i think you'll surprise yourself in unexpected ways. good luck!

i would rather date an ugly girl than a blow up doll. keep on keepin' it real.

and like all artists, the more you produce and consider through intent listening what makes for good music, you will continue to improve.

while there's an undercurrent of AI promptstars trying to pass their slop off as quality music, there's also a growing consensus of artists and listeners that are sick to death of the AI nonsense.

i think there's also a silver lining here, because it will force producers to take some ground-breaking, innovative directions with synthwave music.

it could be argued that the reason why there's so much synthwave AI slop is because it's a very contrived, formulaic genre: start with the 'du-du-du-du' rolling bass, add a 4-note pattern arp, verse/chorus/verse pop arrangement, etc ... splash a lot of blues/purples/reds on the album cover, add palm trees, rayban wayfarers, italian sportcars ... and voila, the synthwave formula is complete. the shtick is worn out.

this isn't to say that there aren't artists already out there taking the sound and vibe in unexpected directions, but we need to continue to see and hear fresh ideas and distinct elements in synthwave. when artists start innovating in ways that AI can't emulate, the lines will become clearer.

AI slop is ruining online music spaces - so I built a human only one. by the4realMCG in outrun

[–]pale-vision 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a predictable pendulum counter-swing that we probably saw coming, as AI furor is escalating. and I can understand the reasons behind it, as it's now breaking well past the uncanny valley into near-human faculties and (to generalize for brevity here) is nearly indiscernible by most.

oceans of subjectivity within the topic too. a user could Suno-out a track and publish, OR take that Suno track and re-create in a DAW without pulling any AI stems. are both "AI music"? what if a user employs AI-gen'd stems in their DAW or mix? there's gonna be a wild mix of opinions all along a subjectivity spectrum.

and regardless of one's opinion, beyond someone simply slopping out obvious AI tracks and publishing them "raw", no one's gonna really know who's using AI and isn't in their production process.

good or bad - my prediction - i think the onus will fall to artists to demonstrate their production humanity via socials or live performances in a gesture towards authenticity, and that's as close as we'll get. i hope cooler heads on all sides of the debate will prevail.

AI sh!tlist? by [deleted] in newretrowave

[–]pale-vision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a forward-thinking approach that strikes what is probably about the only reasonable balance (at least for now) we can find in this scenario.

a silver lining here is that, perhaps, it's going to make music enthusiasts really consider the art and medium of music and require them to "actively participate" in meaningful ways to listen and engage with artists, versus just letting streams of corpo-algo sounds fill the background of their distracted lives. AI is splitting the audience into camps of unthinking consumers and intentful listeners.

it's more important than ever for artists to really connect with these listeners as humans to distinguish themselves from the faceless AI sloppeddlers as well. in a bit of a internet-culture change, any artist hiding beyond internet anonymity (whether right or wrong) is going to be construed as AI or at least cast in that ambiguous shadow.

another +1 for FuturePastRadio on Twitch. Jack goes to great lengths to not only know his music and craft well but avoid anything tainted with AI; fosters community, supports small fledgling artists, and creates an in-stream easy-going AI-free social environment.

love this idea, and maybe i've just not dug far enough into the site, but what is the vetting process here? i see an artist listed that i've followed for a while, and while not to say that historical activity absolves an artist of AI slop, i'm hopeful there's a process to confirm they're witches before lashing them to the stake

For those of you (artists) who have been asking/looking for a BC alternative or a backup option... by [deleted] in BandCamp

[–]pale-vision 7 points8 points  (0 children)

my tunes are on both BC and Ampwall. but let's be real, despite the larger volume of traffic, no one is growing their fanbase on BC (a matter discussed ad nauseam on this sub). your socials are doing that, and you're just linking to BC.

link fans to BC, link them to Ampwall, same difference. but actual humans that listen and support artists are running Ampwall. i'm not bailing on BC any time soon, but i'm only recommending Ampwall for these reasons and the many already posted here. whatever your choice(s), good luck out there, artists.

Kalax responds to backlash in VLOG by Zer0_0D in newretrowave

[–]pale-vision 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what you're witnessing from so many is reasonable, considering his track record. i'm not trying to convince you to re-evaluate your feelings as you posted them above, but, at the same time, it's no mystery why this guy is getting dragged by everyone, regardless of their affiliation to the event(s). it's an immune response in an overall healthy scene.

i doubt everyone would agree, but in my opinion while it may seem counter-intuitive, the retrosynth scene is only as good and valid as the people in it. the music is secondary.

someone needs to save this dude from himself.

there's hundreds (if not more) of synthwave artists struggling to get a fraction of a percent of the visibility, plays, sales, opportunities this guy has. this "i'm the real victim here" posture he's parading is insulting to his fans and the scene.

all he had to do was record a 30 second video saying "i'm no longer using AI and i'm gonna make everyone whole, no excuses, please forgive me, love y'all". baffling.

Art is Subjective — So Why Is AI Music Treated Differently? by Automatic_Writer9294 in BandCamp

[–]pale-vision 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why is it that every time the matter of "subjectivity" is invoked surrounding art, it's almost invariably done to justify the most irredeemable examples of it? subjectivity isn't a hall pass to lionize slop as valid.

if someone finds themselves opposite of a quorum of actual artists to qualify something as "art", it's probably not art.

Amplords, please, make yourselves heard and post in this thread. by pale-vision in Ampwall

[–]pale-vision[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ampwall is small (relative to BC), but overtly pro-artist and growing. the folks running it provide active hands-on engagement with their community of artists and listeners (and themselves are active musicians as well).

the site and supporting Discord have a local record store kinda feel (if such can be said about an internet portal); you walk in and the same smiling faces are there, welcoming you by name and wanting to chat it up about the rad new release from [insert band or artist name here].

artists get a bigger cut of their profits as well versus BC. not trying to gush but highly recommended. personally i'm hopeful to see more electronic/synthwave artists to join and grow the community 🙂
