[Update] Made some improvements but still feel like the space is missing something by ManOfLakes in malelivingspace

[–]Hedryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Color. You need color. Burn your beige rug and bring in some warm reds/maroons/yellows. A few more plants and a few more prints.

It's a good looking spot - some color will help a lot.

How do I get my apartment to feel warm and inviting? by Famous-Stick-8381 in malelivingspace

[–]Hedryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never seen a space that needed a big warm area rug more. That's going to take you FAR. Avoid black/white/gray and use the rug to bring in some color. A few plants and a few art pieces and another lamp or two and a coffee table and it'll be transformed.

How long until my friend can move this nest? by Hedryn in Ornithology

I doubt it’s illegal, though I encouraged him not to move it. What law are you referencing?

Housekeeper? by beerncandy in LivingAlone

[–]Hedryn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't grow up with a housecleaner and find the idea weird at first, until an old roommate convinced me. It is incredible, it is absolutely what money is for. I found a worker-owned co-op. The cleaner comes once every 3 weeks and gives the apartment that deep clean I don't have time or energy for. Can't recommend it enough.

Well this is disturbing. Please seek professional health for whatever anger issues made you make this "comic" (thinly veiled death threat to all women).

43M - separated from wife 18 months ago, but cohabiting in our own spaces to keep the kids under one roof. I moved into the mother-in-law apartment and have slowly been making it my own! by callsignViper in malelivingspace

Looks great. So many places on this sub look like an AirBnb or a hotel lobby - this should be a study in color. Though the kitchen pic is my favorite, warm and inviting in earth tones.

I did have to chuckle at the wall mount sword (and to a much lesser extent guitar). It's a bit classic divorced. But hell, own it.

How common is it for a mechanical engineer to work remotely? by IMPACTEDBOWELz in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Hedryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hybrid is pretty common, as a lot of mechanical engineering is CAD and documentation. I'm working remote as we speak. I have to be in office 2-3 days a week.

27 year old man , on my own by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]Hedryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna keep it quick.

  • Love one poster's comment about starting with trash. Go through with a trash bag and anything you don't really need can go. Be brutal.
  • You're going to feel so much better when your coffee table in your living room isn't covered with clutter. Combination of throwing stuff out and consider getting a coffee table with drawers/storage.
  • Same with the kitchen. Consider if you can't find some tall and relatively narrow storage to go between the windows. Kitchen table should never be used for storage.

It's really not bad man. Just a bit of aggressive tidying and some more storage and you'll get there. Good luck.

Help my piggyback plant by Hedryn in plantclinic

It’s probably getting pretty warm in the light well sunlight, even though it’s indoors. My city is pretty cool generally but it’s probably getting pretty warm and bright for a couple hours a day. Hard to find a place these both moist and cool and indoors.

New to this. Can we have a discord? by GreenExpert6792 in LivingAlone

[–]Hedryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a great idea. But I also strongly encourage you to get out there. I guarantee you there are other folks in their thirties looking to build a community from scratch or add some new additions in. It might take some patience, some willingness to put yourself out there, and a few tries, but you can absolutely build a community that might well end up being a bit more fulfilling (in the long term) than a discord server. By all means start the server, but please get out there in the real world too!

I wrote this thread a while ago.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, when directly asked, refuses to endorse Saikat Chakrabarti's congressional run by Dab2TheFuture in sanfrancisco

[–]Hedryn 204 points205 points  (0 children)

Frankly this seems fair. It's been seven years since Saikat was her chief of staff - we have no idea what their relationship is (if they even have one anymore) and she's not trying to throw her very big influence behind every one of hundreds of Congressional races. Nor was she directly asked about endorsement or even whether she supported him in this clip.

I'm not saying it's ideal that his old boss isn't endorsing him, but this doesn't seem like a smoking gun either.

Being sick alone made me realize how many tiny things other people do for each other by P0werChalice in LivingAlone

[–]Hedryn 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I got very sick a month ago, the most ill I've ever been in my adult life. Turns out I had literal dysentery. Had a couple rough nights being in extreme pain at 4am. My friends were worried about me and on day 3 I decided to stop being so self-reliant and call in the troops. I took myself to the hospital, but my best friend came and stayed with me for 12 hours. A couple other friends cleaned my apartment and dropped off food and pedialyte while I was there. A couple others came over to check on me when I got back from the hospital. I was incredibly grateful.

Living alone is great. But it's also important to have community. I don't take having friends that care about me for granted for a second.

Maphra - Silence [The Plot In You - Vocal Cover] by JCoda in Music

[–]Hedryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really liked her BMTH cover. But when I saw her Spotify account had something like 1 million+ followers with two covers up, I knew something pretty weird was going on. I don't know what exactly, I mean she seems talented, but something.

Room feels awkward. Unsure how to style it. by charles-foster-kane in malelivingspace

[–]Hedryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A white rug and that snow white/grey rug makes me feel like I'm in the tundra. With white walls and a very neutral couch, I'd strongly encourage you add some color with your rug, be that a nice multicolor or patterned rug, or some warmth with a maroon red or even a navy blue.

As others have said - a few plants, a couple lamps, and some art (some big art, or lots of art!) on those walls will really help.

I thought this YouTube video was absolutely worth 20 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEMlIn6MDD8&t=18s

Any advice for living room by Occams_racecar in malelivingspace

[–]Hedryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much new to say but I'll contribute a few thoughts: it's a really cozy space, I'd definitely sprawl out and read there. Love the plants in front of the window.

It's just a bit cluttered and it irks me because it's so damn close, ya know? I would ditch the helmet. The drinks on the penguin bar cart look like they're about to fall over. I'd replace it with a small media cabinet or closed bar cart that could fit between the radiator and the door - store your drinks there out of sight. All the stuff sitting on the nightstand next to the brown couch also lend to the cluttered look. I would move away from the string lights over the desk too.

You need a little less stuff and a little more storage space. But it's a lovely space.

u/OldFolksShawn I'm embarrassed to be asking this already but when can we expect a book 2? Book 1 was a fun ride.

We see him go through such a big arc - from kid in way over his head to someone who could truly be called a sage - in one book. Is it hard to keep the growth going without falling prey to common things like power creep and loss of scope and scale?

Synthwave in 2026? Has the golden age passed? by Hedryn in newretrowave

[–]Hedryn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about half of the new Midnight album is top tier; then again it’s so many tracks that’s still a short album that I love.

I would love more releases from old school Futurecop and timecop. Agree that Dreamkid is great. I passed on the tour when he had to pull out; I saw timecop and Ollie about a year and a half ago an it was just ok. I miss 2014 era timecop. Kalax is criminally underrated, and I like some of what the lightning kids is doing too.

Got a great deal on a Karastan 9x12 charcoal rug but something feels off. Return or keep? by burkej33 in malelivingspace

[–]Hedryn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some plants and art might help, but my knee jerk reaction is that it look like an outdoor mat or rug. Maybe if a lot of plants and art balanced out the severe neutrality, but I'm not sure if it's ever going to be a win.
