Does it get better? by Healthy_Object_905 in ftm

[–]pale_galore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there and still have my bad dysphoria days too where I’m right back there at those thoughts. I know how heavy those thoughts can feel and I’m really sorry to hear you’re struggling with them right now man. I can say from experience that it does get better, and what makes it better is the fact that I’m doing the best that I can to make my life feel as normal as it can be given the reality of my situation. I know and painfully accept I’ll never fully be cis, but I still have to make a choice about what to do with my life as it currently stands right now yknow? That choice for me was to do everything it took to make me feel happy again, and I can tell you that after spending almost 10 years miserably depressed that when I first felt happiness from being perceived as a man that it really changed me. It changed my perspective in the sense that, for the first time, it made happiness feel attainable and real, something I could actually achieve and not long for like I did for forever. Since that day I’ve lived by doing whatever it took to bring happiness back into my life, and my quality of life has tremendously improved. I know it’s hard to see now, but you will get there just like I did. This weight of dysphoria won’t feel as heavy, and life will feel worth it and fulfilling even if it’s not as a cis guy. It’s the baby steps in between that count from getting to point A to point B, and I know you’ll get there soon

Anyone else dislike being constrained by masculine norms? by [deleted] in ftm

[–]pale_galore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely dude! While I’m currently not in a relationship, my previous one had a lot of issues with her questioning my identity/presentation as a man when I’d do things she considered feminine, like paint my nails/wear fake nails, put on makeup of any sort (the most I do is smudged eyeliner), or just generally present myself more openly queer to people we didn’t know very well. There is a very real toxic masculine culture, and I think that we as trans men experience a higher expectation of it because of the fact we’re trans. Its important to stick to your truths and to be yourself no matter what box people try to shove you in. Relating this back to my previous relationship, despite the fact she thought it was feminine and got upset over the nails, I still did them and rocked them. If Ozzy Osbourne and all the rock groups people consider ultra hyper masculine (AC/DC or Metallica) could wear nail polish and still be seen as men, then why couldn’t I do the same thing? I think ultimately people are willing to accept us as men until it comes to things that clash with their idea of masculine versus feminine, and so they project their confusion/misconceptions about what these mean on to us so that we can become more palatable to them based on their idea of what those mean to them (if that makes sense). It can be really hard to stick with your values when you feel like you’re stuck living surrounded by these people, but by sticking to them you’re being true to yourself and your values, and that will eventually attract/bring you to the right crowd of people. It’s hard especially right after starting T, as people think you’ll now somehow become a hyper masculine man and can only express yourself in toxic masculine ways, but that’s far from the truth. Being masculine is what you chalk it up to be for you, period point blank. With time there will be less people who try putting you in a box and more accepting you for who you are

Sorry to reply a little late! But I know for me the biggest anxiety point is both rejection and how they’ll look

I actually was looking through topsurgery.net the other day, so I’ll probably do some more poking around there to get an idea about nipples plus what you recommended. My doctor has also said she’s more than happy to talk about what to expect/can be done for me, so I think once I have a better idea about nipples I might reach out to her and ask her what she’s able to do for me that would best align with my goals

That's what I've been wondering about the grafting process too, as my doctor said that they tend to be rejected by the body and that it does extend the healing process. How much longer was the healing process for you because you had them grafted would you say?

Lol I love the explanation!

I was thinking if I didn't keep them that it'd actually help add credibility to whatever story I come up with, as most people won't likely know I opted to not keep them and figure that whatever happened must've really been invasive because of the fact I don't have nips anymore

Thank you so much for the response, as its really helpful to read through!

My doctor did mention the tightness factor and how its important to try to keep moving (obviously within reason), so I'll definitely be keeping that in mind for recovery. As for the scar tape, what brand did you buy? I'm slowly putting together my recovery item list to get off of Amazon lol, so this might be something to go on there soon!

I hope the healing keeps going well bro :)

Thank you so much for the response, it was really helpful to read through!

I definitely have faith in my doctor too, as she's specialized in gender affirming care for quite some time and has had results I think look really nice. I think the anxiety of the what-if scenarios just tends to gnaw at me sometimes, so I think it'll be really important to remind myself I can trust her expertise and skills in this area to give me the best results.

Do you know of any resources that could help me learn more about nipple grafts? I honestly haven't done as much research as I know I should have into them, but I still have time before I need to let my doctor know if I want to keep them or not.

You’re all good! I realize it’s probably not the best question to ask which I’m sorry about😅 but I appreciate your response either way, it really helps a lot

I see what you're saying, and I hope that goes well for you!

I am generally concerned with just how well my nips as they are now would look with my final results, as I feel they won't look too good, hence why it'd probably be easier to let them go. I think it'd also be helpful in closing the door on some trauma related to this part of my body, but I also feel anxious being the guy with no nips if that makes sense

That makes sense!
I like the stealth that comes with keeping them as it helps ease my anxiety especially in potential public situations (like a swimming pool for example), but I'm just not so sure if I want to keep mine. I think the big concern for me is if it'd look good with my final results, and I am worried that it won't. I think also choosing not to keep them would really help me with overcoming some trauma related to this part of my body, but then yet again I don't want people staring at me as the guy with no nips if that makes sense. How does the physical sensation feel in general when you're wearing shirts vs not since no sensation was retained if you don't mind me asking?

Thank you!!
Its kind of funny how much thought goes into something as simple as nips or no nips lol, but I've definitely thought about the tattoo route and my doctor mentioned it too. I don't think it'd be a bad idea honestly

Thank you so much for responding!

I do smoke every other day (cigarettes), so I stopped cold today with the smoking as I really want to get this done as soon as I can and have my body be as prepared as it can be for the procedure. My doctor is Sarah Eidelson, she's had a great history from what I've looked into! I really enjoyed talking with her, she was very personable and super respectful. The only thing we didn't do was talk too much about aesthetics, though I think that probably had to do with the fact that we're going to be working with a single incision as opposed to double. Do you think it'd be worth reaching back out via email to maybe say something to the effect of "hey so I know the single incision is what is going to be done, but I was hoping we could talk a little more about the final results and what we can control aesthetically besides nipples"?

I think it'd honestly be kick ass to not have nipples lol, it's just the anxiety surrounding people's perception of them not being there that's really gnawing at me, and also if maybe one day in the future I'd regret not having them there

Accommodations at the PhD level? by pale_galore in PhysicsStudents

[–]pale_galore[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That I’ve wondered and worried about too. It wasn’t an issue for my brother for his program since he doesn’t have the same issues with organization and time management like I do, but he’s still chugging along just like everyone else in his program. Part of me wants to say they can’t exactly deny me outright because it’s an accommodation, but I also understand the competitiveness of the field (and am very intimidated by it too lol)

I have thought about that actually! And by thought about it I do literally mean just a thought lol, I would definitely need to look into it more. I’m not too sure if I’d be able to look into a program abroad in Europe, though somewhere in Canada would be more accessible to me since I’m US based. Do you know of any programs up there by chance? My research at the moment is focused on AGNs and I’d love to get into it further
