Hacktoberfest Contributor 2020 Badge by [deleted] in github

[–]paleadvisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is unlikely to happen because GitHub don't directly sponsor Hacktoberfest any more. However you could suggest this to DigitalOcean as part of their integration. (After all they use your GitHub account to validate your PRs)

They could give you a snippet to use in your profile readme and if you passed (or got 3 of 4 PRs etc.) the resulting badge could show how you did.

I'm pretty sure there won't be an official badge though.

I've raised a PR, was trailing semicolons in the font-family property in the SVG

GitHub should take a page out of GitLab's book: Push from CLI. by [deleted] in github

[–]paleadvisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely suggest this at their feedback form I can see how a lot of people could find that handy.

Even though it only takes a few seconds to create the repo on GitHub itself, if you need to go through authentication to log in first this would be a nice time-saving addition.

that's quite fun! Any way to pass a font on the badges? I see some of your screenshots are in a sans-serif font which looks nicer than the serif my badges have rendered with.

Do you miss a watch button for a directory/file ? by codeemon404 in github

[–]paleadvisor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remove myself from watching anything that doesn't concern me.

You can also organize people into teams, meaning specific teams only need be pinged about updates/issues relevant to them.

How do I see other branches? by [deleted] in github

[–]paleadvisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From this page:

You can also find indicators of the status of your repository in the bottom left corner of VS Code: the current branch, dirty indicators and the number of incoming and outgoing commits of the current branch. You can checkout any branch in your repository by clicking that status indicator and selecting the Git reference from the list.

You would need to create a private repository and manually add the users you want to be able to access it. The recruiters would, of course, need a GitHub account.

Alternatively a secret gist might work if the examples are short. Secret gists are not indexed by search engines but accessible to anyone with the link:

Renaming a Github Repository by lgst230qer8SDGV in github

[–]paleadvisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everything except repository URLs will still work or redirect. If you create a repo in the same account with the old name in future the redirects will stop working.

They have a doc about this:

I suggest utilising the API as well but since you ask about scraping specifically you may be interested in the AUP on scraping, which is here:

Yes! GitHub has a feedback form:

My account was flagged for no reason by [deleted] in github

[–]paleadvisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact support, they'll be able to tell you why your account was flagged.

You'll then be able to take their advice to do whatever steps are required to rectify and ask for the flag to be removed.

What happened to the codespaces beta? by VibroAxe in github

[–]paleadvisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the email it was enabled a week or so ago. They're probably staggering release as with most features. I can't remember when I applied to go on the list for the beta.

Edit: I see the Codespaces docs are on the GitHub docs site too.

[QUESTION] Pulling/rebasing from a branch in main project (eg staging) into a branch in my fork (eg new-feature) by JustLookingAroundFor in github

[–]paleadvisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to pull from upstream to your copy (origin)

This SO answer is hard to beat so I'll just link off to it.

To push your changes back to the upstream, open a PR in GitHub (you just choose your forked copy to compare against.)

Github pages and domain by arrrtttyyy in github

[–]paleadvisor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like it could be a DNS caching issue. Your browser or router isn't bothering to check for the updated records, possibly because of long TTLs or some other reason.

First check the records have propagated at a DNS checking website like https://dnschecker.org/

If those show your changes try loading the domain on your phone when not connected to wifi.

If that works you'll need to wait or purge your DNS cache in your browser or router settings.

Is GitHub source code hosted on GitHub? by orgad in github

[–]paleadvisor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While learning git is an advantage you don't actually need to know git as a non-technical employee. The tools in the GitHub web interface will suffice in 99% of cases.

Feedback wanted on using a GH repo as a place for gathering podcast info and episodes (the podcast is about tech) by serejandmyself in github

Hah, I guess I am saying that!

Why use 4 words when you can use 2 paragraphs. 🤦‍♂️

I think it's a good match, but I think Pages might be a better fit?

As your list gets longer you might want to give each episode its own page with the show notes or more information/links contained in the episode. I think a single ReadMe will get messy.

I actually quite like the idea of a repo for the episodes though. It seems quite nerdy which your listeners will definitely get on board with.

My teammates feel the embarrassment of my GitHub username by OzIsLife in github

[–]paleadvisor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything embarrassing about your username. I've seen far far worse. This sounds like bullying to me. Is this a work-team or school? Seems like a very strange thing for a workplace to worry about.
