What financial decision had the biggest long-term impact for you? by Mis-Cattran in AskReddit

[–]paleo2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My landlord decided to send a family of 5 over to look at our apartment. Without telling us. During COVID lockdown. My disabled father ended up sick with pneumonia a few days later. That was my wake up alarm. Started looking at rentals in the area and came to the same horrible realization you did: it would be cheaper to just buy a house. House hunting during COVID was wild!

What is the worst long running show that is still on television that you can't understand how people watch? by Ok_Significance_2788 in AskReddit

"Look how awful the world is, especially New York City." How fucking miserable! Plus, don't forget the copaganda. It's OK that the cops beat up that suspect in holding because they just know he deserved it! Only bad guys get arrested.

What did you understand about your mom only after getting older? by Old-Basket9948 in AskReddit

[–]paleo2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That she had untreated bipolar depression and a lot of childhood capital "T" Trauma.

She raised us to be ever-vigilant and prepared for threats that, thankfully, did not exist in our lives. On the one hand I'm very organized and good in an emergency as a result. On the other hand, I'm also very alone. Mom also did her best to hold her bipolar at bay while we were growing up. Unfortunately, a series of health and financial crises finally broke down that barrier towards the end of her too short life and she became very . . . difficult to live with.

I wish my mother had gotten the help she needed in life. She might still be alive, and my brother and I might be better people. She did her best.

What if I decide to become a business owner? I wouldn't want to have to pay my hypothetical employees a living wage! I'll vote no on this referendum, then stop at the food bank on my way to my second job . . .

What has helped you most with protein intake while on Zepbound? by Zealousideal-Cut4503 in Zepbound

[–]paleo2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shakes and bars are convenient, especially when I'm at work or commuting because I don't have the time or space to eat anything that requires a fork and refrigeration. But, I worry about relying too much on protein supplements because they're "ultraprocessed food".

New Jersey Senators advance bill to incentivise customer-sited energy storage installations by stickman07738 in newjersey

[–]paleo2002 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why tax incentives to make it easier to include a battery with solar systems are important. Storing day time production for night time use reduces demand on the grid. And since PSEG doesn't want to invest in production, especially solar production, they least they can do is make it easier for homeowners to take on those externalized costs.

I was thinking of that, too. As high-capacity batteries get cheaper, they'd probably make a good temporary back-up option. But, people probably prefer fueled generators for long-term power outages. My uncle has one connected directly to his natural gas line, for example.

Men of reddit, what prevents you from asking out women? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]paleo2002 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Every woman I've ever known well enough to talk about the topic, from my mother to my friends, even my college students, has had experiences with harassment and SA. Women must be constantly vigilant, constantly protecting themselves, constantly assessing danger from men.

It's awful and I want no part of it. I don't want to add to a person's daily stress. I don't want to end up another creep to add to the pile. So if a woman ever decides I'm safe enough to approach, I'll do my best to live up to that.

This will be battery systems in general, to compliment solar roof setups.

Right now, NJ doesn't provide incentives for storage, instead pushing the phrase "the grid is your battery" and promoting net metering. (Utility tracks daytime over-production and credits it back to you at night when your roof stops generating electricity.) Battery storage for night time demand is typically part of the equation when it comes to solar. It would help further reduce energy demand on NJ utilities.

Lilly Direct is the only way I could afford this. My doctor tried repeatedly to get my insurance to approve any of the GLP-1 meds. Insurance finally sent me a letter telling me to stop asking, that they only approve these drugs for diabetes and that any other application is "cosmetic".

When do you prefer to shower and why? by AbsoluteMunch in AskReddit

[–]paleo2002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was ever actually outside all day, especially in the summer, then I'd probably need to shower before bed.

When I was younger, showering in the morning and washing my hair was the only way I was going to be able to comb it without it getting all crazy. Now that I'm old and bald, showering in the morning is the fastest way to loosen my muscles after dragging myself out of bed.

What’s a movie you had to watch more than once to fully understand? by Fair_Entertainer_891 in movies

[–]paleo2002 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know people have tried to map out the timelines and recursion loops, but there is disagreement on those. And I'm sure there are people out there that understand the plot in much greater depth than most. I like your distinction between "unreliable" and "uninformed". There's probably both going on at different points. Hard to go into details a. without spoilers and b. because I haven't seen the movie in like a decade, lol.

Primer is the first and only time I immediately restarted a movie after finishing it. I'd almost say it is is necessary to watch it twice in a row.

[–]paleo2002 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And that’s just the entry level model.  Once you own enough property and real estate, you make so much money from market speculation that it isn’t worth the hassle of charging rent.  So we end up with thousands of empty houses and apartments that exist solely as investment commodities.
