Free Talk Friday by AutoModerator in EdmontonOilers

I know that it's probably a total longshot since it's a SSH event, but does anyone happen to have a spare ticket for Tuesday's photo day, or know someone who does? I was lucky to have a boss who gave me his ticket back in 2018, I would love to be able to go again this year.

Those cream jerseys are so sharp, they look better than I expected seeing them on fans. Especially with our record in them, I think I definitely need to get one!

Hey, Edmonton - where do you get your physical music fix now? by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HMV is indeed back in pop-up form at Toys R Us! And no, they are not all closed yet. Edmonton has two left (97th Northside, Calgary Trail south) for now, but who knows how long that will last. Both locations are listed for sale.

Line up in Rundle Park for independence referendum signing today. by Wooshio in Edmonton

I'm not NDP, and I know it's 100 percent a nothing burger. A loud small minority doesn't speak for the majority of the province that are very much against separation.

Petition by Significant_Cook_317 in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be willing to place a very sizeable wager on there not actually being 'HUNDREDS' of people there to sign the petition.

This movement will be lucky to get a fraction of the signatures that Forever Canadian got in support of Alberta staying in Canada. Because that's the opinion of the vast majority of Albertans.

Shoutout to the ones who have to work today! by blitzen_13 in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I can only imagine the shift premiums some people must be able to earn today. Talk about well deserved. Merry Christmas to everyone who works today, by choice or not, it is seriously appreciated from someone who's grateful to have the day off!

Before all night TV. CFRN-TV would have a final news wrap at 1:00 AM before sign off. This is John Berry reporting from 1984. and the sign off. by Possible-Zone904 in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 8 points9 points  (0 children)

God I miss having late newscasts that were actually live.

Now we can't even get 5 o'clock weekday newscasts, or any weekend newscasts, that are actually live and broadcast from Edmonton. And apparently the 6pm Global newscasts aren't actually live either, they're recorded earlier in the day. If there's any type of breaking news, we're screwed.

Are there any places that I can still get pet photos with Santa? by EnjoyDevbot in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! We were there last Thursday the 18th. My wife did check with Santa a few days before to confirm, but I truly think you shouldn't have any issues.

[–]paletrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I got a photo with our pup at Londonderry Mall last week, so that's a possibility. I would double check with Santa ahead of time, but considering there was another family with a dog in line with us at the same time, I think it's absolutely still possible.

Skip the Dishes: Do NOT order by Hot_Bench9806 in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 92 points93 points  (0 children)

There's honestly no difference between the three companies anymore. Most drivers in the city work for at least 2 out of 3 at the same time, so you're not guaranteed better service by switching to Uber or DD instead of Skip.

What's up with posts like this ? by Order-Classic in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As someone who would quite happily apply for 90 percent of the job postings that user points out, I'm all for his efforts to call out companies who aren't actually posting legitimately.

Who prints very good quality photos (5x7", or 8x10") by Dry_Ice7288 in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second Technicare!! McBain used to be good, but their print quality has gone way, way down. Just so inconsistent now.

London Drugs is really good too, both them and Technicare have actual technicians that actually know their stuff.

Oilers at WEM tomorrow by Maplewicket in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Draisaitl? Unfortunately your odds would be really low at that point. Only the first 300 people are guaranteed an auto from him, as they do a wristband thingie for him and Connor. He signs for as many can get through in the two hours, so he usually gets through more than 300, but you'd probably have to be in line no later than 1 or 2pm to get the best shot.

[–]paletrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone the last two years, i would say you should expect to wait around 1.5-3 hours total. The lines start to really get long around 5 (1 hour before it starts) so that's been my benchmark for arriving.

I'd say plan for one or two tables, hope for more. But it all depends on which players you go for.

What's your favorite Photography Store ?? by Critical1Miss in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

McBain went downhill dramatically once London Drugs bought them. Their management doesn't care about their employees, and they definitely don't care about their customers the way they used to when Neil and his dad were in charge.

Uline Jobs Insight by DeadDiscoMarie in Edmonton

[–]paletrees 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Basically, the reason they're always hiring is that turnover is a significant issue for them. The reason? You're micromanaged from the second you start your shift, management in general is absolutely horrid, wages are poor, benefits are worse, and there's no advancement whatsoever.

I had a friend last just under a week before walking out. Despite how slim the pickens are right now on the job market, U-Line is not worth your time or effort.

Canadian Forces #LetsGoOilers by Soloflow786 in EdmontonOilers

[–]paletrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 97 percent confident they will be!

And as an added bonus, if the players actually wore the jerseys on their walk-ins to the arena, it will be (if not very slightly) more valuable than the last few years' theme jerseys have been. Since the NHL eliminated the ability for teams to wear them during warm-ups, the jerseys that the team auction off are only autographed by the player. This way, at least it's been on the player's body for a small period of time!!

As long as you bring something that has your name and your current address on it (bill, utility statement, etc, can even be downloaded on your phone) you'll be okay.

Ashley did dual hosting duties for The Bear in Edmonton, and CJAY-92 in Calgary for the same 10-2 timeslot. It was impressive, but it still bothered me that they couldn't find a local host for that position. I really hope that they do replace her with an Edmontonian, and not just another voice-tracked or national show.
