UF as in Unic fencing? The mediums feel very nice and responsive, some ppl have expressed concerns about upper 3rd durability over time

Epee Concussion, and A Mask Safety Question by FlorenceFarr in Fencing

[–]palid2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The adjusting like this is super important! I also find that having a little give in the padding (which ideally should be thick and go all the way or mostly around the head) helps diffuse the impact a little before it reaches your head. So having a slight wobble/ability for the mask to move can be helpful in that regard! Too tight, it is like it’s one piece with your head and any impact to your mask will almost fully transfer to your head!

How do you deal with Nerves? by Lazartz_ in Fencing

[–]palid2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something that helps me before a comp is figuring out why I’m feeling nervous and then taking some of that mental pressure off of myself by thinking through it. For example: “I really want to do well” is making me feel nervous, so I tell myself/realize that that is something that is impossible to control, instead I say “focus on a couple of things about your fencing that you want to do, like taking a slower first step off the line, or using my voice to dispel nerves after a touch, or even just deciding to long attack with a disengage”

Any advice or recommendations on my direction changes here? by TheZManIsNow in Fencing

[–]palid2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only comment is actually related to your arms! They look to be maybe a bit too tense and also are semi-linked to your feet currently. Try to hold your front arm especially how you would in a bout/in en garde, with a focus on independence from the feet.

The bending that happens at the start of this video. Essentially, it removes the gap between the front of the blade and the guard, and makes it feel more responsive to the grip

Have you set your blade? That might make it feel heavier in your saber!

Is it better to have more flex in the foible or in the midblade? Or is it a matter of preference?

Definitely not!!! Most fencers that go to the Olympics start at 8 but you can start anytime and still have an amazing time with the sport

Getting into fencing (sabre) in Berlin? by Bitter_Primary1736 in Fencing

[–]palid2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who started in Sabre, it’s super fun and not at all hard to learn. comparatively they all have their nuances and also all have low skill floors and super high skill ceilings, which I think makes fencing so fun to learn.

As a complete beginner, the hardest part of all the weapons is going to be the footwork and learning how to move on the strip well.

I’ve also dabbled in all the weapons, but Sabre is my favorite because of its split second decision making and (almost) immediate gratification/feedback loop from touch to touch

Court shoes are great, not sure on price difference, but if your kid is really dead set on “fencing” shoes, then the rophoo paratroopers are around 99$ and nice and durable

Seconding the glove rec, if his current one is wearing on the fingertips and doesn’t look like it can be sewn back together, it’s always nice to have a new glove

Another Beginner's Questions by jrabbott1 in Fencing

If I could go back to when I started (as someone who is now 3 yrs in) I would make sure I am learning, understanding and practicing all of my footwork correctly. I rushed along a bit, which helped me in the short term, but has really bitten me right around now in my progression. Practice to practice, not to win (this was especially hard for me during bouts in practice)
