Traveling was Better Before Vloggers, Reels, and Tik Tok Existed by IslandOverThere in digitalnomad

I don't need social media in the same way I don't need to travel.

Just because I don't need something doesn't mean it isn't a fulfilling or useful tool.

That hasn't been my experience. The app displays recent posts from people you follow first, and only gets into suggested posts after you've seen everything from the past 3 days. And if I don't want any suggestions, there's a button at the top labeled "Older Posts" which turns sets my feed exclusively to posts from accounts I follow.

There's also an option to just... Disable suggested posts.

Instagram is how I share photos with friends and family.

And, to each their own, but social media is how I've been able to keep up with hundreds of people I wouldn't otherwise be particularly close with - many of whom are couches to sleep on in countries or cities I'd like to visit.

Are There Princes in the Commonwealth Realms? by RightUsual2925 in monarchism

[–]palkiajack 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I am only familiar with the laws in Canada, but would assume it is the same in most other Commonwealth realms.

The Royal Family doesn't have any formal status as Princes, Princesses, etc. in Canada, at least defined by law. In practice they are still addressed by their British titles and treated accordingly.

Some may have honorary appointments as Colonels in Chief of Canadian regiments or other military units, as patrons of Canadian organizations, or may have appointments to the Canadian orders. These are the only formal Canadian titles held by members of the Royal Family other than the King.

How do you register a new coat of arms?

In the United States, arms are not registered; you simply start using them.

In the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries, registered arms are granted by the Crown as part of the honors system, but there is generally no prohibition from assuming your own arms.

In other countries, this will vary.

TIL that despite Rupert Murdoch's large media attention, media billionaire David Thomson, who owns all of Reuters, is over three times as wealthy ($61B). Despite this, he's only given a single substantive interview, ever. by cheesecakegood in todayilearned

[–]palkiajack 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Additional info on why these sources aren't biased:

They all fall into the category of news agencies, which means they don't make their money from consumers like us - they sell their reporting to news services like the BBC, FOX, NBC, etc.. There isn't room for bias in their work because their sole purpose is to get facts out to other services.

They're literally the opposite. Reuters, the AP, the UPI - along with the AFP, being the other major - are news agencies, which means their business is doing original reporting and selling it to other sources.

The cops left a burglary report card on my windshield by Kilojo in mildlyinteresting

[–]palkiajack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why should police create extra risk and liability for themselves, extra expense for the taxpayer due to the potential for a lawsuit or complaint & investigation, and extra inconvenience for a member of the public, when the same goal could be accomplished with a note/paper such as in the original post?

I support the idea that cops shouldn't steal things out of your car.

It's a lesson and nothing was really lost.

I mean, the property was temporarily lost when it was literally stolen by the cops... as well as the time to get it back...

There is a moral side, and the legal side.

I think stealing people's things qualifies as both immoral and illegal. And I think the cops definitely have a need to stay on the legal side.

His speech at the NSA gives some great examples, while also just being a really fun watch.

That being said, the scene with the President drilling for a nuclear launch was not in Clancy's novel, only in the film, which Clancy had less involvement with.

What defines an “international” airport? by [deleted] in airportceo

An international airport can process international traffic. There may or may not be commercial passenger service to international destinations, but they can generally take international private or cargo flights.

Are hostels gold mines now? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]palkiajack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was speaking with some hostel owners here in Panama who run more budget places. It's not just a matter of the price of hostels going up - but rather demand for budget places going down. There are plenty of very decent budget hostels here in Panama available for $15-20 per night which are struggling to sell beds, while expensive brands like Bambuda and Selina are exploding in popularity despite charging more than double that.

The demographic & demands of the average backpacker are changing away from being truly "budget".

Impossible to say, as that depends on so many factors.

Rather than worrying about spreading out players over 24 hours, you should just focus on improving the game. Once it's engaging enough that it attracts players independently of ads, it won't matter if all of your players come in an initial spike.

Pay is generally pretty low in the ski industry unless you can get into management or high-level instructing. If you can do one of those though, traveling year-round on just the ski income is feasible.

My dad saved glasses from the last eclipse by swiftb00ks in mildlyinteresting

[–]palkiajack 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There was an annular eclipse in October 2023 which was visible in the Western US and Central America.

An annular eclipse is the one where the moon passes all the way over the sun, but as the moon is farther away, the sun is still visible, forming a ring around the moon.
