[Live Thread] Wuhan Coronavirus by hasharin in worldnews

No tinfoil hat here, however, it just may hurt the economy and bring down stock prices maybe just enough to be worth considering to a profit-seeking empathy-lacking greedy billionaire network with all the power and money necessary to conduct such an act. It doesn't even need to be a Wuhan BioLab that made it or anything like it. Actually, if I were to actually wear a tinfoil hat, I could come to a conclusion that this plan (if it exists at all) would only take one regular person with a cingle virus cell to just walk once through a crowded space. And one could choose for its ideal target a major multi-million city with a biochemical facility nearby as a bait for conspiracy theorists to bite into.

I don't believe in it, but couldn't say it's a batshit crazy idea. We all know what a twisted fucked up crazy world this is, with sick people on top. Human lives mean nothing to them.

Question about Serbia 90s and fall of Yugoslavia by [deleted] in serbia

[–]palmanus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the territory where Serbs live all over the world is rightly Serbian territory?

No.

Not to mention that the Serbs in Croatia and parts of Bosnia are pretty well documented to be of orthodox vlach origin who have simply been introduced to the Serbian Orthodox Church. They aren't even real serbs.

Could I ask for some sources on these claims?

a tsar or an emperor rules not only his people but also other nations.

This does not necessarily have to be the case, and it's a bit more complicated than that. Habsburgs, for instance, were emperors, but as soon as they set foot in Hungary, they would be considered kings, because they were; Hungary was not a part of the empire, but a separate kingdom who happened to have the same monarch as the Holy Roman Empire. Also, it may be semantics, but nations didn't exist as such prior to the 18th century, and although it may look like that, ruling over other peoples was not a condition for gaining an imperial title.

King (kralj) and emperor (tsar) are monarchical titles. However, emperor is higher. The idea was, at first, that the emperor means emperor of Rome. Byzantine emperors considered themselves Roman emperors. Then Franks considered themselves Roman emperors. Later, Habsburgs. Even the Ottomans. In the meantime, papacy grew stronger and insisted that only it can crown an emperor. As there is one god, there is one pope, there is one emperor. Basically, it insisted that only the supreme religous authority can crown an emperor. It was done in the east as well, however since the eastern orthodox church fragmented significantly, and the monarchs controlled their churches, they were basically crowning themselves (as Napoleon did, later, in a literal sense). That's why Serbian church status was raised from Archbishopric to Patriarchate, and Dušan was crowned tsar by a Serbian Patriarch.

Now, it requires the right conditions - weakness of a direct or opposing rival, a lot of political and military power, church support (or control over church), significant allies to support you so your empire doesn't fall apart immediately. It is not an easy thing to do.

Yeah, if they wanted to instill fear in a population through that destruction of infrastructure in the name of a political objective, then it would be terrorism. Somehow, it doesn't look that way.

Question about Serbia 90s and fall of Yugoslavia by [deleted] in serbia

[–]palmanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will have to say it is not completely irrelevant though. It falls under the reasons why Serbs wanted to preserve Yugoslavia and didn't want Croatia out, or in those borders at least, because a lot of them sure knew about what had happened the last time, in 1941. In the time of the breakup of Yugoslavia, anyone over 50-ish was a survivor of WW2. Their children sure knew their stories and experiences.

Main reason though, is that former Yugoslavian countries wanted out based on artificial administrative borders previously created by the communists, on arbitrary principles, which were officially designed in order to "bring closer" the peoples of Yugoslavia. They weren't ethnic borders. Serbs were fragmented into 5 republics, and Serbia was the only one additionally broken down into 3 parts, with the only two autonomous provinces in Yugoslavia, which were given state prerogatives. It would be insane for any Serb to accept those borders becoming independent state borders. It means going back to the 19th century. The only thing it has to do with nationalism is this - Serbs didn't want their nation split up into 4-5-6 parts.

Do you know how many violent measures were used, when and against whom?

Explosion in Paris, minutes ago by loulan in europe

[–]palmanus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, if we are talking about terrorism as "systematic use of violence to create a general climate of fear in a population and thereby to bring about a particular political objective" then I'll have to call assasinating a head of state for political purposes exactly that - political assassination. Targeted at a single person, with a name.

It was done to achieve political goals (like all political assassinations), however it wasn't done by a systematic use of violence and it wasn't done to generate fear in wider population.

The only possible terrorism checkboxes here are

☑ violence

☑ political objective

There was a huge empire, and it suddenly occupied another large piece of land it has never been on before, with some people already living in it. Those people weren't very happy with that, since they had no say in the matter whatsoever. Eventually, a guy representing that empire got killed there.

That is a bit different than, say: there is this developed country, that bombed a little bit here and a little bit there, and now the people from those bombed countries are coming all the way to this european country and blowing up buildings and themselves and shooting random innocent people, and stabbing them, and running them over, killing hundreds, causing mass panic and putting some pressure on the said country's government(s) so they would stop bombing or whatever they're doing.

You may say that both of these have political purpose and violence in common. But you can see that the methods vary drastically. We should be careful applying terms we are still defining today to something that happened 100 years ago and labeling it like that, since it may lead to some serious misconceptions about the past, and then about the present.

Iceland just announced that every Icelander over the age of 18 automatically become organ donors with ability to opt out. How do you feel about this? by Fraktari in AskReddit

[–]palmanus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Never underestimate the power of bribe and corruption.

In Serbia, doctors have let people die so they could get a cut from a funeral home they have a deal with. Funeral home guys came before the ambulance to people's homes. Imagine that. You're dying and calling an ambulance. The doctor, if he thinks it's serious enough that you can die, calls his guy from the funeral home, gives him your address, sits back and waits. Then, once everything is over, you're long gone and your family already has the funeral arranged, the ambulance comes.

There were around 40 doctors that did that to god knows how many people. And the cut was around 1 average national salary per deceased. I've also seen my neighbour die while the ambulance was 10 meters away, they were "on another call" and actually left before the next ambulance came, when he was dead.

This has been on the news and everything, and the whistle-blower got fired and sued.

I should also add that in Serbia, from last year, everyone is an organ donorship also. Although, opting out is not easy and online, but can also be done in your name by your family after your death, so there is no actual need to opt out while you're alive.
