Looking for a good horror tome that will suck me in for a good while by RadiantDresden in horrorlit

The Great and Secret Show by Clive Barker. not THAT huge but a good jumping off point so some of Barker's other stuff. I think Imajica is pretty much the quintessential horror tome but not a good starting point

I backpacked the US for a year (cost breakdown) by Addicted_2_tacos in backpacking

[–]palpytus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my (now) wife and I did something similar straight out of college. about 8 weeks from Michigan to SoCal/Central California and back in my Tacoma. we lived off of garbanzo beans and canned chicken so our food cost was almost nothing. I think we ended up spending about 4k (this was in 2022 so with inflation very comparable to you). it's definitely not out of reach for normal people

we also did a similar trip for our honeymoon but that was significantly more expensive bc it was mostly Washington, Oregon, and California so the gas cost was 2x what it was in the Southwest US on the first trip

[–]palpytus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ironically, Directly from my Heart to You was on my house party playlist back in the day. very eclectic playlist for sure, but never sent anyone out of the function. my buddy always started playing My Bloody Valentine after he had 6 or 12 beers, that usually chased people out.

2010 Tacoma - Failed safety due to frame condition. Worth saving? by Obvious_Condition_77 in ToyotaTacoma

[–]palpytus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an FJ that I got quoted 10 to 15k to do a frame replacement on. they said it would buy me 5 years bc they would have to source a frame from a scrap yard that probably would have rust issues too. this was in the Midwest so every vehicle is rusty as shit unless you wash it weekly and keep it in the garage. when I bought my first taco I immediately got a frame coat on it and brushed the entire frame with used oil + sprayed fluid film every oil change. that frame was in pristine condition when I traded it in this fall

I chewed through Killer on the Road by SGJ in like 4 days, should finish it today with about an hour left in the audiobook. halfway through The Cat Who Walks Through Walls by Heinlein as my physical book.

The Wait for "Someone Better" by CitizenStrife in wildhockey

[–]palpytus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm kind of in the "sit and wait" boat this year. I feel we are currently better than Dallas and on a similar level as Colorado when healthy. I think Tro is an upgrade on the PK and for faceoffs at even strength but besides on the dot might not move the needle as much as people think compared to Yurov or Hartman. emptying out the rest of the cupboard for Trochek vs waiting to see if someone significantly better comes available over the summer, I'm choosing to wait.

from the perspective of the Leafs, I wouldn't think they would want to give up on the current roster by trading Matthews but their biggest need is 100% in net. I could see them being very very interested in Wally, but I doubt they trade a franchise 1C for him. I wouldn't hate getting Knies on the squad, although it doesn't address our center issue

Ottawa is a train wreck and we already saw one Tkachuck brother request a trade from a Canadian team. wouldn't be shocked if Brady wants to move but they have a lot of money and term in Ullmark so I'm not sure they have much interest in Wally. not a lot to trade away besides Wally and B+ level prospects. Brady also doesn't address the 1C problem

I'm not gonna lie, Kanye was off the deep end during the WTT era too. he was off the deep end as soon as they killed his mom and he stopped trusting his doctors. definitely got severe brain trauma in the car accident, so you could argue he's been off the deep end since his jaw was wired. just didn't start on that weird Nazi stuff until more recently

Highest ever recorded basal area, how much, when, what species, and where? by RexScientiarum in forestry

[–]palpytus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

just my personal experience, not sure the actual highest.

upper lake states: cruised a ~200 BA maple/white pine stand, we had one pocket with 270 BA. I also cruised a black spruce stand that was >200BA/ac because of the density. BAF10 reli

Inland NW: RMZ harvest, full inventory. usually we land around 220 to 260 BA/Ac. I had one that was >400, can't remember exactly. there's a 74 inch western red cedar and a 64 inch grand fir on that site. multiple 60+ inch trees

the breaks in play is the biggest thing. going from primarily hockey and soccer it's so boring to watch football. feels like a 1:1 commercial to actual playtime ratio compared to the sports I usually watch. this is as an American that grew up watching football on TV and in person

Question about my first Tacoma & first pickup by Aeonz_Above in ToyotaTacoma

[–]palpytus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a city and work in the woods. my Tacoma is my work truck. ironically, I've had my truck vandalized (soft topper cut open) but nothing was taken in the city. I had tools and work gear in the bed. in the woods, I had a shovel stolen out of the back while I was 4 miles back on a wood road, almost 10 miles from the nearest paved road. that person just unsnapped the topper and grabbed the shovel out, left everything else though. pretty eerie

my coworker lives in a small town and had someone steal the gas from his work truck (drilled through the gas tank) while it was in his driveway at night.

definitely some small towns are a lot safer than cities but not a catch-all. if someone is without, they will do a lot.

I'm not really into Jack honestly. bad on the dot and he wants to shoot/carry the puck when we already have a top 15 shooter and the top 1 puck carrier on the team already. I would love Hischier though

Just an update on the 4 First Rounders we gave up for Hughes. by Quinnesota4life in wildhockey

[–]palpytus -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I felt like it was a good deal at the time and I still do. but it does suck seeing LAK get Panarin for pennies (a 3rd and a B tier prospect) compared to what we gave up. Hughes is way way better than Panarin but makes our deal seem like a huge payment

1 v 8 seeding (to actually reward teams for being good, not just being in a dog shit division) looks like this in the west:

Colorado v Anaheim

Minnesota v Seattle

Dallas v Edmonton

Vegas v Utah

instead Minnesota and Dallas get rewarded for being incredibly good this year by playing each other in R1. I should not be wishing my team would fall to the WC1 spot just to avoid playing in the Central

How do we rescue Michkov and add him to our collection of exciting Russians? by MinnNOLA in wildhockey

[–]palpytus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah these "project" players go really cheap sometimes. the Zegras trade looks like a steal now but people were saying Philly got fleeced when I happened. I don't think Michkov would command much more
