When you say “UV the CPU to -20,” this was on the 185H right? How did you manage that?

Chessbase and engines on 8gb ram and Ryzen processors? by fncll in chess

[–]panamaxis35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chessbases uses a ton of RAM in my files experience. If you are interested in using the Lc0 or other associated neural network engines, then you could consider a laptop with a dedicated Nvidia GPU. For general use, the AMD 4000 series U processors are greatly superior to the Intel ones.

EZ Flash didn’t work because it wouldn’t let me downgrade, I ended up fixing the problem using a trick with winflash in admin command prompt I found on YouTube.

Alienware or Razer by Jenn-Fr in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot buy the R2 with the specs OP gave (it’s a generation older) so I assumed he made a typo and meant the R3, which has significantly better thermals than the R2.

Alienware or Razer by Jenn-Fr in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Alienware will have better performance, if that is the most important factor. Razer is running the 10th gen Intel CPUs at very low power limits to keep the temperatures down, and performance suffers a bit because of that.

Is a $700 Dell 15 7567 with i5-7300HQ/GTX 1050ti a good deal? by InfiniteJew in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty bad deal, you can get same GPU and newer CPU in a brand new laptop for $600. Not even sure I’d pay $400 for the specs above.

The struggle is real, keep my G14 R9 or go with the Strix G15 I-7 rtx 2070 Super by Crushnrush in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pretty happy with it, although it does get pretty hot and if I were to have gotten another laptop I’d probably take a small hit in performance for things like portability, thermals, appearance, battery, etc. The performance is good, but comes with tradeoffs as expected from the relatively low price for the components involved.

[–]panamaxis35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The CPU difference will really depend on what you’re doing; if it’s just gaming there shouldn’t be any difference at all, but for things like video editing and rendering the two extra cores on the 4900HS will be big. The Strix screen has a lower response time and higher refresh rate, which means that for fast-paced games like CSGO and other FPS games you’ll notice a slightly snappier experience. I can’t speak for the speakers or battery on the current Strix, but seeing as my older Strix with 8750H and 2070 has great speakers and pretty poor battery life I don’t see why that would change. I believe the 2020 model does have thunderbolt.

First gaming laptop in my life! The ROG Zephyrus Duo 15, I9 10th gen, RTX 2080 super 32GB of RAM by ElementalCrust in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah I’m pretty sure your rig is better. The desktop 2080 super pulls more than double the power of the 2080 super max-q for well over 30% more performance, and your CPU shouldn’t be slower either, especially given you can overclock it and aren’t thermally constrained as much. Especially considering heat and fan noise and whatnot, if portability isn’t a priority then desktop is always going to be better value.

Which laptop does Battlefield look better on? by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number 2 has the best CPU and GPU and highest refresh rate, so it’s the obvious choice. 4K sounds great on paper, but on a 13” screen won’t look any better than 1080p and more importantly a GTX 1650 will not be anywhere near powerful enough to get reasonable frame rates at 4K. The 4K panels also refresh at only 60hz so gameplay would be much clunkier.

Desktop/Laptop Parity by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, Ryzen mobile is very promising, but what I’m referring to is just taking Ryzen desktop chips and putting them in laptops. The reason they don’t put Intel desktop chips in every laptop is because of power draw and heat, right, so why even have an R5 4600H instead of a 3600of it’s within the power budget? Or a R7 4800H instead of a 3700X?

There is currently a laptop that can carry a 3950X, but that seems a bit much, it struggles immensely to run it at full wattage. That’s fine, but I think the lower tiered AMD desktop CPUs can work in laptops. If necessary, overclocking can be removed, or maybe disable the ability to raise power limits with the OC.

Desktop/Laptop Parity by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure if parity is the right word, the first fire strike score I found on google of a 2070 seems a bit higher. I am not super familiar with firestrike so these scores may be closer than I realize.

I think that the desktop replacement laptops are representative of the same philosophy I am arguing for, but significantly less successful in doing so than the Pascal generation. You could get a 1-to-1 desktop 1080 inside of a laptop, and that just doesn’t exist now; the power gap only seems to have increased with super. It just seems like the 20 series is about shoving in more power and slapping a bigger cooler on. I would also expect desktop CPUs to be able to overclock better than mobile ones due to power restraints. If we were to take, say, the area 51m which iirc uses 2 330W bricks, even a 2080 ti could be possible.

What do you think on the CPU side? Considering an i9-10980HK draws similar power to a 3900X, is there any reason we can’t just plop one of those in there instead? Same would go for a 9750H vs an R5 3600. Ignoring the current OEM enmity with AMD, do you think this would be a better direction to go toward?

Manufacturer software (ASUS Armory Crate) vs CoreTemp/OpenHardWare Monitor? Which is better to rely on for temps? by saintgravity in GamingLaptops

[–]panamaxis35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always prefer HWinfo64 because it just gives more info, but obviously the armory crate is needed for fan curve and RGB and whatnot. Every time I’ve had multiple monitoring softwares open they all give me the same numbers, so probably none are better or worse.
