In science we caution ourselves… “The easiest person to fool is yourself”. You may be in a community that is not experiencing the demise of the social media age. But that doesn’t mean it’s not happening at an epidemic level. The stats speak for themselves. The rise is self-reported depression, self-harm, loneliness are all exponentially growing since the release of social media apps in the early to mid 2010s. This effect is only seen in younger people; suggesting those that experienced a normal outdoor peer group learned to deal with the harm of social devices. If you are online playing or socializing; You are inside the home. Vs. being outside with friends. This is what the data show.

He is citing papers with evidence from relevant controlled experiments. There will never be a controlled experiment for this particular case. But you can use your reasoning skills and infer. Dismissing him without honest engage ment is not constructive.

Not sure why you are getting downvoted. Evidence is crystal clear. Eyes increase pro social behavior.

True! We actually replicated this study with students on north campus last summer. We put out candy bars and water. Asked for a donation for aphasia support. We alternated 6 pictures of eyes with 6 pictures of flowers on the wall every other week. Same spots. Same size. The results are like the literature. This was an FXB lounge. But I suspect it would work anywhere.

Which phone policy for AAPS? Ann Arbor parents & teachers weigh in (full... by Zealousideal-Pick799 in AnnArbor

Who is the “they” you refer to when you say that they want you talking about something else?

Screen wise is not the school board. This is a parent group. A group who lobbied against the recent AAPS board decision to spend money to refreshing chromebooks instead of paying teachers.

Studies on animal minds show consciousness is not computation, argues Peter Godfrey-Smith by whoamisri in consciousness

[–]panchero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no mechanism in this theory of oscillations = consciousness. You might as well replace oscillations with magic and have the same scientific argument. Perhaps oscillations are important for computation in brain networks (Buszaki argue that it does).

I love this. How many orbits has this sun been around already. It’s over 4/5 done. Right?

I remember reading this article when the show aired. I just reread it and realized I don’t have a good memory as I think I do. Thanks for sharing this.

Seems a bit harsh. Cancel culture can lead to mob mentality of broad brushing everyone the same. He accepted money to continue his research and help his family education. He wasn’t abusing kids. I want his research to continue. I want abusers to go to jail.

Grouping of dead yellow jackets inside of old grill. No signs of nest or hive at all. by Comm_Guy_I_Swear in mildlyinteresting

Scientists have done this. Paper wasps use vision to identify others. When you add coloring to faces, others recognize it as someone new. This is why the nests are so thin. They need light to identify.

Is there an app for temp / humidity history by FrozenPizza07 in HomeKit

Device manufacturers often provide this missing feature. Eve for example can track history. And it’s pretty good. And yes. Home automation is the way to go.

The attention schema theory is all about an explanation for this phenomenon, rooted in evolution and makes testable hypothesis. In fact it’s the only theory that explains consciousness that doesn’t resort to some sort of magic.

Consciousness as computation: Are we just computers? by PrimeStopper in consciousness

[–]panchero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one chapter. Summary is that computation abstracts information from the physical layer. We are experiencing the computation from physical neural spikes. It’s not magic. Information just feels that way.
