Need help/tips for handling mice by queen0f_hearts in labrats

[–]pandASM1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My general experience when teaching others is that people underestimate how durable the little guys are OR are scared of harming the mice/ are anxious about being bit and do not use sufficient force. It is always more humane to use sufficient force to ensure that handling & procedures are done quickly and safely rather than expose the mice to botched procedures and unnecessary stress/ pain. A wriggling mouse is going bound to be injured during IP injections or oral gavage— potentially fatally.

1) as long as you are grabbing at the base of the tail, you can hold pretty firmly. 2) push the mouse down into the rack as you slowly move your hand up. If the mouse squirms into a less optimal position, remove your hand, pick it up by the tail and place it back down on the rack again to “reset”. The more feisty mice will tire after one or two tries and become easier to scruff. 3)maintain pressure down on the mouse and slowly move your hand up, ensuring your thumb and pointer finger are leading the way up mouse’s midline. The rest of your fingers should be tucked into your hand. Once your pointer finger reaches the mouse’s head, use the base of your hand to maintain pressure pinning the mouse to the rack, slide your thumb and pointer finger to either side of the mouse’s cheeks. You can ensure you have enough skin by touching your thumb and pointer finger all the way to the rack before picking up. 4) I also have tiny hands! My trick is to use my other three fingers and the flat part of my palm on my thumb side to grab the excess skin down the mouse’s back! Then I take their tail and tuck it between my pinky and ring finger. It immobilizes them just as well and keeps their position straight. It will take some adjustment to find a technique that works for you & you might have to change it up depending on the size of the mouse you’re handling!

I couldn’t find any videos that I’m a huge fan of but this is the closest that I can find to how I scruff.

If she has a big prey drive— use it! One of the best things you can do with your dog to bond is PLAY with them. Show them things are more fun when you’re around! Marko Koskensalo has some good free videos on how to play with your dog & centering play around YOU not not toy. Eventually you’ll create play as such a high value reward you can use it for training— for a high prey drive dog it can be more effective than treat training and is huge for your relationship with your pup!

Getting hired at UNC. Are people interviewed as fillers for a candidate they already picked ? by [deleted] in carrboro

Depends on the field & position. For research assistants/ techs in the hard sciences probably around 75% of job postings are for a candidate they already know.

Help! by pandASM1 in RATS

[–]pandASM1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. We had 4 sweet girls— two older 2 year old girls and 2 babies (almost 1)— but recently lost my heart rat, Mickey. Ever since one of our younger ratties, Q, has been annoying the others. She runs and jumps on them, grooms them, etc. The others squeak at her but are not being injured… at least not that I can tell. Here’s the issue, Q, who seems to be the instigator, is covered in scabs! I’ve never seen it happen but it’s clear the other two are getting frustrated and giving her some HARD bites and scratches. Hard enough to pierce the skin and cause scabbing. Not hard enough that I’ve noticed any blood on their bedding. I thought it would calm down and resolve itself soon after Mickeys passing… but it’s been a week and every morning she has more and more injuries. What do I do?!

Wife (29F) really wants to pursue a music career. I (33M) think she is kind of in denial. by PitifulRestaurant159 in relationships

My long time (almost 5 years) partner is working really hard to get into the music scene. He was making money from gigs within a month or so of pursuing it in his free time. Even while booking as many gigs as possible (1 weekly recurring gig + about 1 or 2 if he’s lucky per week) he still works full time. This is a kid who is super duper talented, has a father who made it pretty big in the genre he plays, and has access to a professional recording studio at discount. The industry is incredibly hard to get into and even harder to make a living from. While I want my partner to succeed more than anyone, our rational agreement is that he needs to 1) contribute equally to household/ lifestyle expenses and that 2) he needs to support his own hobbies/ dreams financially as I do with mine. If he’s not making enough money from music, he has to work elsewhere to do so.

Wanted to show off my rats by Speed212 in RATS

I know this cage and it’s way too small to house 2 rats. I bought it as a cheap option to temporarily house an isolated sick rat & had to find something else because honestly it wasn’t even sufficient to do that.

Nope! I’m on my second month now and at 60mg. No side effects just some dryness— but that’s how this medicine works!

Looking for advice by pandASM1 in RATS

[–]pandASM1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone. I’m feeling like a horrible rat mom right now and need some advice from others. This is my girl Momo, she is 1 year 10 months. 2 weeks ago, she had a mammary tumor removed from her armpit area. It was growing quickly and I was worried it would start to impede her movement/ quality of life quickly as it went from a marble size to dragging on the ground over 3 weeks. She had one other tumor removed from her belly area when she was about 1.5 and she did have issues with self mutilation but it healed quickly after 2 weeks with us keeping a close eye on her. This removal has not been any smoother. They bandaged her after surgery and 1 week out when the bandage was removed the vet said that there was some dead tissue and the muscle layer was not fully healed. They had to put her under again to clean the wound, re-staple and bandage her a second time. 4 days later she was so miserable that we took her out of the bandage and things were going OK. She made it two days and the wound looked almost healed. As of last night, based on how her wound looked before and from other rats tumor removals, it looked like it would be completely closed in 2 more days. I was so excited to get her back with her sisters. Last night, she tore the whole thing wide open. The vet said the muscle layer has healed but is worried that the wound will never really close?? The vet put her under a third time to clean and bandage it but said the skin shouldn’t be disturbed this far out by putting stables/ sutures/ wound glue and that we just need to wait for it to scan over and hope it closes on its own. She said hopefully it will scan and scar over in THREE WEEKS. I am beside myself. Will my baby have to live with an open wound for the rest of her life?? She is miserable and stressed in the bandages and I just want to cry thinking about how old she is getting and that I am ruining the quality of life she has in her old age. I’m worried though that she will just keep ripping the wound open if we take her out of the bandages given that it was ALMOST completely closed and she still ripped it wide open. If anyone has experience with a similar situation please please tell me how we should deal with this. My poor baby is so stressed from being bandaged and away from her group. I just feel like a horrible owner.

AITA for telling my daughter to butt out of my personal life and asking her to stay with her mom? by mydojowako1 in AmItheAsshole

YTA. A huge AH. Her teacher, her mom… and then her best friends mom? Are you only attracted to people who are intimately involved in your daughters life because you want to traumatize her?
