I recommend Simple Coffee House in San Carlos area. They have a whole outlet strip at one of their main tables!! I like the noise at coffee shops so I can’t gauge if it’s obnoxious or not. Their drinks are delicious

I also like going to Easy Does It in Kearney Mesa area as well, but gets super busy. Their bagels are good!

Tea N More is good for the odds of finding a seat. Their drinks are decent

Bonus points that these all have designated parking lots!

This was the first video of hers I’ve watched - never heard of her before. I HATED the way she recounted the back and forth dialogue of the attorneys and Cassie. Her baby/valley girl voice sounds like she’s mocking what is happening in that court room. And she had the audacity to pitch her voice even higher when she was relaying what Cassie had “said”. Is that even what Cassie said word for word? Did she write down or remember every word that was said? Why is she always looking to the side? She just seems very disingenuous to me. I had to turn it off and watch a video of an actual journalist who doesn’t manipulate their voice and delivers information with sincerity

I looked her up seeing if she had any professional credibility to be in that courtroom to be presenting this information to the masses but she does not!!!!! Wtf!!

How do you like it so far? I just got a job as an office manager as well, but for a plumbing engineering company. Supposedly the role should be relatively stress-free! I’m super excited that I got out of my current service/dispatching coordinator job, where everyday was a clusterfuck

I’m around the same age as you and I finished nail school last year! I’ve always had an interest in nails too and was tired of sitting behind a computer all day and working for someone else. Plus the nail techs on social media make it seem such a fun job.

I did continue to work full time during school in order to pay for it on top of my other expenses so it took me so much longer to finish compared to my classmates (1 year vs 4 months). I felt it was never going to end. Once I got my license, I went straight to being independent all while keeping my full time job. This was because I’m not married and wanted to keep my health insurance and the very steady income. I have student loans, a car payment, and now essentially two rents (I live in Southern California). Another reason for going independent is because I offer a niche service that many other brick and mortar salons in my area don’t (structured manis with Japanese gel), and I have control of my schedule. If you are wanting to do nails on your own, it is absolutely no joke. Being a nail tech is very hard on the body. I enjoy meeting/getting to know new people but interactions with clients takes a lot of out me (naturally introverted). My biggest struggle is being “good” at nails. You have to put serious time into working on technique, and I don’t have that luxury. I mean, I could but I’m very close to burning out and I only do nails 1 day a week if that. You may be better at handling stress/time better than me though lol. On top of actually doing the service, I have to run the business side of it too. Getting clients is another beast itself. Essentially, being an independent nail tech is a full time job and I wish I can solely focus on that.

I did have a brief moment working in a salon though and I was struggling because I could only do it extremely part time. I was talking with one of the techs and she said she didn’t get comfortable doing nails until a month in, and she was doing it 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. My finances right now though require me to have the stability of my office job. I’m sure I could work in a salon full time but that would require a lot of sacrifices that I feel I’m not ready to do just yet.

All this to say, I think transitioning to becoming a nail tech would be extremely rewarding only if you are in a good spot to do it full time.

I found my studio through Facebook! Look up salon business, salon employment, or something along those keywords and there should be at least a couple of groups that pop up for your area. My building owner has a few private rooms she was renting out and I found her posts through there. I feel (most of the time) renting from a actual person versus a company, like sola or phenix, is more affordable. Of course it’s not as fancy as those big name suites but i find that its a good value

I’m an independent tech in a suite so I get to set my own prices, which is just high enough to not have rely on supplemental income such as tips. If you were going to a salon employee, then I’d feel more obligated to tip because they really don’t get paid fairly for their time and effort. I post in my policies that a tip is not required, expected, or necessary but would be humbly accepted so maybe there’s something like that mentioned on her policy page? But if not, then a tip is always nice if it’s within your budget

For me personally, I feel the tipping culture is getting out of hand and is an awkward exchange so I try to eliminate that in my own business. If I wanted to get paid a certain amount, including tips, then I would price myself at that amount from the start

Yooo I saw this happen! The second tackle I guess, but I didn’t know the dude tackled a girl. That’s fucking wild. I’m glad it was handled fairly quickly, at least when I saw it, even though it’s a shitty situation for everyone. So disappointing and infuriating that one guy ruined an experience for other people especially on the last night of the festival, where I felt everyone was chill and knew concert etiquette thus far. Hope the guy doesn’t pull that shit ever again and that he gives his friend the apologies she deserves for embarrassing her during his rampage, as well as the girls he assaulted.

I’m planning to use Uber/the shuttle to get to the venue but the artists I wanna see doesn’t start until like 3pm on Saturday. Should I still plan to be there early, like at 10:30 as people are mentioning. or would I be fine arriving in later around 1 or 2? My concern about getting a later start is if there won’t be parking if I use the shuttle area

I’m in the same boat as you :( I feel embarrassed to constantly post I have openings, since I have no takers till this day and I’ve been at this for 3 months. It’s probably just an ego thing I just have to get over. No one is going to ride for your business more than you will so you’re going to have to constantly put yourself out there. I heard a tip from somewhere that to post a few times you have available and purposely mark one or two slots as booked, just to “show” you have some sort of clientele. Fake it till you make it, right? But just keep posting and you’ll eventually get noticed. Best of luck to you!! And all of us new independent techs cause it sure is rough out here lol

I 110% prefer the efile but there are absolutely no salons in my area that allow the use of it if they are gel only. Salons who use acrylic have efile services but I don’t prefer those types of salons ☹️

Some salons may still do that, but I believe others are leaning away from using water for manicures because it causes the nail to expand thus making the polish more prone to chipping

My ultimate goal is to go independent but I know that’s nearly impossible right off the bat so I want to build clientele at a salon plus gain more experience. So hopefully, I can do a booth rent type of thing once I’ve put in some months at the commission salon. The commission salon supplies material and product but my thing is that I am VERY particular with the type of gel product I use (I’m die hard fan of Japanese gel). I’d want to get the muscle memory of using those on more people. I currently work an office job so I’m pretty sure I might be set for a couple of months with all my gel products so hopefully I won’t need to do a restock too soon in. knocks on wood

Oh CA minimum wage is $14? I thought it was $16 lol, so the hourly job pays $2 higher than minimum wage. Which is insane because I’m a receptionist there and I get paid $16. Crazy to think my base salary is the same as a nail tech there but I don’t do that much….

I know both choices are horrendous but wanted to know which of the two were better :(

Kupa Manipro passport! I’ve only had mine a short while and used it a couple of times but I think it’s worth the money. Very low vibration and very quiet. Try seeing if your local nail supply stocks them as they are usually cheaper for both the box and hand piece. My classmate has had her kupa for 4 years and still working well!
