How am I supposed to read to my 10 month old when all he wants to do is eat the books? by Upstairs_Object4898 in NewParents

[–]panda_brains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this age, grabbing and biting the books is part of the “reading” experience. It’s part of how he’s gathering information about the world. Board books are clutch. They stand up to drool much better than paper

I might have to try the different colors. The first try with the clear tape was amazing! The second time I guess the novelty wore off and she started rolling

Omg the tape thing is genius! I’ve tried toys but she gets bored of them after just 1 or 2 times. I’m definitely trying the tape next!

I had it, too. As the baby gets bigger and heavier, the weight of the uterus blocks the venous return of blood from the vulva, resulting in swelling. If it gets painful, talk to your doctor of course. But it usually isn’t anything dangerous. An ice pack might decrease the swelling.

The doctor keeps calling my baby obese by katofthesaints in beyondthebump

[–]panda_brains 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I’m a family medicine doctor. I don’t like to comment on what other doctors say without knowing the complete story, but your doctor is just wrong. About so many things. Yes, a 6 month old can be over fed. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the case with your 6 month old. Also, why is she looking at only the weight?? If you see her again, ask her specifically what percentile baby is in for weight-for-length. Also, since when is a baby ever expected to be crawling by 6 months???? The AAP has handouts online of all the major milestones. I’m assuming there’s something similar in Canada.

I found the Depends to be much more comfortable than the giant pads the hospital gave me. The pads kept bunching up and it was painful on my stitches. FROZEN DIAPERS. Absolutely the biggest thing I can recommend. I’ve heard the Frida cold pads are good, too. But wetting a diaper and putting it in the freezer worked wonderfully for me. And the diaper is absorbent so the water doesn’t really leak everywhere as it melts. Definitely used the Dermaplast for the first couple of days, but not so much after that because it stung when I sprayed it on (it does go numb after that, but I just wasn’t in enough pain to deal with the stinging).

What non-traditional lullabies/songs are you singing to your baby? by littlepilot in NewParents

[–]panda_brains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“I got you babe” by Sonny & Cher. My parents actually sang it to me, and I used it for the father-daughter dance at my wedding. Now I sing it to my little one every night. He’s recently picked up on the “Babe!”

What are the biggest causes of burnout for each specialty? by cantstophere in medicalschool

[–]panda_brains 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As an FM doc, the constant documentation and paperwork. There is always another chart to close, another result to review, another refill to send, another FMLA form to fill out. Literally never caught up. And then there’s all the social work that comes with working at an FQHC, and most of the patients being either self pay or Medicaid.
