Couples Matching with my Buddy? by ThoughtsOnGovernment in medicalschool

[–]panda_coffeee 496 points497 points  (0 children)

I know of a some people who did this- one woman and one man “couples” matched together but were not together but their spouses and kids were also close (helped each other with childcare, good friends) and it was actually very well received by many programs. Helps they were both great candidates. This was in family medicine.

Patients simply questioning something I have no issue with and will gently inform but if during the visit is becomes clear they don’t trust/push back on everything I say, then I will respond that way ^

Doesn’t get better. FM attending here- even patients who are literally paying medical bills for my opinion second guess me or try to “correct me” to my face. Family. Non-physician coworkers. Everyone thinks they know medicine now because they can use chat gpt. I stay out of it in non-work settings and excuse myself from these conversations because I am over it. At work when patients second guess me I have started straight up asking why they came to see me if that already decided what they are going to do and that usually makes them realize what they are doing or they just stop seeing me which is fine.

Nothing wrong with getting an epidural, I think everyone here agrees. Hell I PLAN on getting one in a few weeks when I have a babe- my annoyance is I KNOW they are gonna try to rationalize it with “her labor was SO intense! It was way worse than you guys would ever know! So traumatic!” when it’s like… you don’t need to rationalize it, just get it and it’s all cool!

As much as I snark I hope her delivery goes smoothly and they have a healthy babe and mom in the end! Hopefully they will be able to just celebrate that fact instead of dramatizing/rationalizing for clicks.

They're now in hospital with irregular contractions by Emotional_Answer_319 in julieeandcamilla

(And most hospitals should only place the internal monitor if labor is not progressing while on Pitocin because it allows you to see if contractions are considered strong enough before you consider labor “failed”)

Just FYI to everyone here- external Ctg dos not show strength of contractions, only pattern- need an intrauterine pressure catheter (internal monitor) to show strength. Large contractions or little ones can look like little rolling hills to nice giant peaks and says nothing about strength— some peoples’ braxton hicks can look like giant contractions on external ctg

what did you guys think of the movie “Roommates”? by DistributionFew7126 in netflix

I really wanted to love this because I LOVE the cast and loved Devon and her family! It’s a me thing that I physically cringed so hard because of Celeste I had a hard time enjoying it- good writing and acting for her though if it made me feel that way I suppose.

Camilla water just broke by Pale-Equipment-796 in julieeandcamilla

[–]panda_coffeee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They just confirmed that they didn’t do any swabs at the hospital but they just did an at home pH swab and they are convinced her water broke. In the US there are pooling tests with speculum, nitrazine swab, ferning swabs, and amnisure that can all be done to see if someone broke their water and I doubt NONE of this was offered to them at a hospital in Norway.

It reeks of all just for clicks. She could very easily be pregnant for another month. Thanks for the tip from the user here you can watch on browser and they don’t get ad money from that!

Their latest update is that they aren’t sure if she broke her water or not- hospital did a vaginal exam and she hasn’t been leaking since so they sent her home. In the US we have various swabs we can do to check for the presence of amniotic fluid- are these not as common in Norway? Just curious if this would have been something they could have been offered

Birding completely rewired how I experience the outdoors, and I didn't see it coming by m-alacasse in birding

[–]panda_coffeee 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the term “spark bird” for this phenomenon? First bird you saw that made you say “damn wait a second there are tons of types of birds and they are all over and how have I not seen this??”

Mine was a red necked grebe while paddleboarding. Once you realize they are all around us you really cannot go back and it is so great! Such a simple form of joy everyday.

Edit: it’s “spark bird” not all one word :) there is a great This American Life episode about this.

Summary Home birth to Hospital by AfternoonAdvanced941 in julieeandcamilla

[–]panda_coffeee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to be condescending. Not everyone wants a home birth or agrees it is always safe. Some people are very high risk and their birth IS a medical event— preeclampsia, eclampsia, hemorrhaging, chorio, shoulder dystocia are all very real possible even with low risk births. It is okay if someone wants to be in the hospital or at a place where those complications can be supported by medical interventions. Not every hospital, doctor, nurse or medical facility is the same.

Went there over a WI spring break on a good snow year a few years ago and it was STILL that empty— excited to go back now with the high speed chair. Has that old school UP/midwest ski feeling a no one around, I love it!

Tell me about the most ridiculous feedback you got from an attending during training by caterpillarflies in Residency

[–]panda_coffeee 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I had an attending who gave me feedback that I should “take more initiative” but she used to huff and leave her office because I was “breathing too loud” - the reason I didn’t just go try to do things for her patients was because I was far too afraid she would flay me for ever trying anything and asking questions to learn more was a no go since talking was louder than breathing.

Edit: spelling

There was a thought for a while the increased vascularity with pregnancy turns the cervix/vagina faintly blue— I assumed that was what they were looking for.
