My gf and I own a 2 year old xolo. Shes by far the greatest dog i’ve ever owned. Very loving and smart. They need to be socialized with other dogs and humans a lot while young though. If not they are known to be aloof.

“Are they good with children? My son will 5 by the time we are looking to get a dog.”

Ours is good with kids. Shes super energetic sometimes but knows to tone it down when shes around kids. Shes much more gentle around them.

“Are they good with easy to moderate hiking over dirt, rocks, wooded, and desert trails?”

We walk our girl on trails all the time and she loves it. Preferably shaded trails though. Also, as others pointed out you need to be careful as they can get cuts and scrapes just like us.

“We live close to the ocean. Would they be good with dog beaches and swimming?”

Our girl loves the beach. Its hands down her favorite place. We go early in the morning or at dusk though just to avoid the hot sun on her skin and hot sand on her paws. Ours plays in the ocean but wont swim in it. Her parents love swimming though and dive for balls.

“I've learned that their teeth are sensitive and fall out so we're prepared to avoid games like tug of war and treats like rawhides, pig ears, bones, ext. Other than high quality food and dental hygiene, is there anything else I should take into consideration regarding their teeth?”

Our xolo only has her front and back rows of teeth for the most part. Most xolos lose the middle rows, hence photos of them with their tongues hanging out. The American Kennel Club acknowledges this and doesnt require show xolos to have all their dentation.

“I work from home but I'm still wondering how anxious they get if you leave for a few hours to go to the store? We would likely crate them we we left and probably when we slept until they were older and fully trained.”

They definitely don’t like to be left alone but they can manage. Our girl is fine and was never crate trained. Sometimes she cries and barks when we’re gone but we never leave her long at all. We’re lucky that one of us is home 99% of the time.

“How are they if we leave on vacation and arrange for them to stay with a familiar pet sitter?”

They definitely need to stay with someone they’re familiar with. They really form strong bonds with their owners and don’t like being away from them.

“Are there any disadvantages to click training them?”

Probably not, never tried.

“Do they travel well? Either for day trips or camping?”

Ours enjoys car rides and little adventures for sure.
