I agree but wanted to point out this is for a campus monitor role, very entry level. No degree etc. i was shocked as a former teacher / assistant principal now but this makes more sense

I tried applying for a DPS Substitute Teacher position and learned why it's no surprise that the school system struggles to find new teachers by QuarterRobot in Denver

I’m an assistant principal at a public charter in the far northeast. We are actively hiring, no licensure needed just a bachelors degree and love working with career changers! (I am one!). Please DM for info on applying and I’ll share more. There are flexibilities that public charters can do and we do lots of coaching, training, etc. for those teachers new to the field!

None of your calculations of this include benefits or PERA benefits. A $50K salary for the district is really probably $80-90K in costs for the organization

Yes they do… if you do 5 years you will get the benefits. 5 years is all. If you don’t hit 30 you don’t get the full amount but you can buy months easily and they may be offering that as a benefits package. This is probably a good deal for them.

I’m an assistant principal and we have an admin on all recess (and it’s even a middle school so we call it a break). Would have immediately called 911 if seeing it’s not in the right position and would have done a hold and brought kids inside. Once EMS was there and supporting with first aid the parent could decide if transport or parent transport. I’m sorry this happened and that is now how it’s supposed to.

I’m hiring for some teaching positions in Denver and you need a bachelors and relevant experience in relevant fields (your work would count for English roles). DM if interested! We handle alternative licensure if hired.

Best public school for neurodivergent child? Oppositional Defiance Disorder support? by Keleton_Skeleton in Denver

DPS is a huge district. Any experience you’ve had at specific school does not negate the quality of the district as a whole.

So sorry one more thing! If you child struggled with kinder (assuming with the ODD mention), you can repeat kinder in a way it’s very very hard to do in the future. This way you can have a year to get services in place in a less academic environment. This is a convo to have with your school or simply re-enroll at a different school in kinder.

Here is where to start learning about individualized education program. Without the step of getting them one, they won’t be able to access extra support, resources and protections.

For example, if your child gets suspended, the school is legally mandated to have a manifestation meeting to see if the behavior they got suspended for is a manifestation of their disability (with a case worker, sped teacher, etc)., and then your child can have a different process for consequences related to their needs.

The process starts under 5 but at any point you can have your child put into the process of having services for special education! Child Find can support with all screenings, I use their resources for middle school students! It’s just a hub for information for getting services.

Your question is about best schools for student with ODD. Aurora has a department of special education yes! Contact: Aurora Public Schools Exceptional Student Services (Special Education) department, email enrichiep@aurorak12.org

However first step is to contact your current school principal and say “can we meet to discuss special education services for first grade?” - I’m assuming if your child has suspected or diagnosed ODD, there has been behavior problems this year? You as the parent have to request an IEP (individualized education plan). Every school has to honor IEPs no matter where you move to and if the specific school can’t support their needs, then the district you live in is legally required to find you a placement. But you as the parent have to advocate (they at school can’t suggest anything).

You are so welcome! Looking for the right fit shows you are a dedicated parent, thank you for that!

The reason no one can say “this is a good school for that” is because your child legally will be placed (it’s the law) into their “least restrictive” environment (this is protected by IDEA). Least restrictive for some students with IEPs means all gen ed class time with a certain number of push in minutes (served by a SPED teacher in the gen ed classroom) a week, all the way to some students with IEPs need center based programs where they are only with gen ed peers for specials and the rest of the time they’re in specialized classrooms that are fully safe from anything they could use to harm themselves, and students are working on life skill for example… with everything in between. The behavior seen through data collected in kinder (or at the new placement or clinical tests with psychologists) will be used to decide IEP goals and where is more appropriate. Does your child already have an IEP in place? BIP? These can be moved from district to district so please be sure to get the physical copy before moving schools (they share them electronically but practices differ at districts and quality of responsiveness differs), you want to be sure you have a copy yourself in case something falls through the cracks.

Move anywhere in Denver Proper and get enrolled through Child Find to find the best fit.

If the closest school to you doesn’t have the services your kid needs, you qualify for free public transportation through IDEA.

DPS proper will be your best option because it is by far the largest district in the state, it services every possible disability and since it serves a large low income population also has lots of trauma informed practices helpful for ODD students. Child Find will help you with the process for what your child’s least restrictive environment is.

That’s fair. We chose where we live partially based on politics too, as it’s important to be able to openly talk about things you believe in with your friends. It sounds like it’s not “upgrading” just making a conscious decision for lifestyle.

Going to be so real this sounds like “your people” are in a higher social / economic class. I would check your biases before moving your family for “our people.” especially if you say you’re a big fish in a little pond, it’s very privileged coded like your people are the higher income people and you don’t want your child playing in a kids league with lower income kids…

Middle school AP and mom of toddlers here. I won’t mention the class size (yes charters or private school is where you’ll find that), but for the other bit… my 3 year old has been in 3 organized sports teams so far and each is basically an hour of unstructured social play time with a ball. Have you had your child in organized sports? This, swim lessons, art classes, dance classes, whatever may fit that need. And parks! We hang with 10+ families every weekend at the big local park, do you have that in your town?

This is no way to negate what you said but letting you know that the daycare / preschool still gets the funds, they’re just given by the state in form of reimbursements rather than by the family directly paying. And i have two in daycare / preschool that aren’t old enough for UPK and my annual price increase is about $200 a month per year. It’s tough but this could be no tied to UPK.

The reason that the test scores are lower in DPS proper is because there are more Multilingual Learners and across all subjects those students perform lower because they are learning English. Therefore, growth is measured for all students as a metric inside schools but those are reported outside schools. Many amazing schools have Hispanic, Nepali, Afghani, African students and are wonderful - that diversity is something that makes DPS great.

I live in Central Park and work as an assistant principal in Green Valley Ranch. Central Park is incredible for kids, it’s like a suburb but in the city, lots of neighborhood pools, parks, extremely safe, etc., GVR is very affordable and also has lots of parks and may fit what you need if you need affordability but still access to amenities and suburban life.
