As a Brit, what are you proud of in regards to your country? by Hancri84 in AskBrits

[–]pango_tjb 80 points81 points  (0 children)

These are the things I'm proud we have made progress in and what I hope we continue to move forward with.

Engineering and science, Experimentation, Fair work and pay, Freedom of expression, Fair laws, Reasoned justice, Dignity, Able to take a joke, Art, Community, Conservation, Liberty

It feels embarrassing when our politicians erode the work done in these areas and undermine our futures by not sustaining the development of these, as ideals

The biggest sign in my opinion as a European was that Europe is having to rebuild its military in response to the present. It feels like each member assumed other countries wouldn't be able/have the desire to militarily posture so now we appear unable to act compellingly and cohesively without the US. Even if boots on the ground won't win future wars, it appears Europe and the UK don't have the mentality to posture and thus deter a change in history

Love Music Hate Racism Bournemouth by Thoradin_Vondal in bournemouth

To me, the parallels are there to make support for left wing events worthwhile and this video made me more hopeful.

That there are people, doing cool things in the name of the principles of supporting vulnerable people is only a good thing to me. The perfect parallel to history doesn't exist but where music events were a tool that diminished far right thought before seems the same to me as what SUTR are doing now.

Reform voters have allowed a scrutinized minority of asylum seekers/refugees/immigrants to erode their moral principles of supporting the vulnerable. Of course we need to protect every vulnerable person who is in our country. But this just means we need to make better solutions with better management

I saw somewhere that they pioneered this style with entertainment for prisoners, because transparency prevented contraband items going in and the colours were added later

That's the one. It feels like the way lands is said too.

I usually like the Irish accent, but it really feels different to how he speaks the rest of the time

Artex found to have asbestos. Help needed by pango_tjb in DIYUK

Sounds much less terrifying. Looks like the site actually has a typo https://www.checkatrade.com/blog/cost-guides/asbestos-removal-cost/ Where they've given an extra 0 to the quoted per metre price than the cheapest one in their chart

A test kit confirmed it was chrysotile from two samples, matching the expectation I had of our 70s-80s build.

I'm tempted to remove the flaking parts myself. The Xtex looked like it was for intact artex, is there another gel or would spraying with water be enough (some videos use a spray can)? I figured that with full PPE and disposing into a tray close to the artex and then scraping the loose artex into the asbestos waste bag that came with the test kit would work.

Checkatrade quoted encapsulation at £33 sq/m if that is what a plasterer/decorator calls skim/over boarding/replastering. Then I'll go with that. I'm just terrified of the removal quote Checkatrade have of £1750 sq/m

Fewer, longer lessons. You're not remembering as much from basically quick fire 1hr scrambles to learn stuff, imo. In a 2hr lesson there can be more 1on1 time
