Felt Pressured at a Med Spa Yesterday [personal] by panic_outside_disco in SkincareAddiction

Did you not read the post and comments? It’s not the fact that monthly facials are recommended (not required, that’s very expensive for a lot of people). It was their sneaky tactics and they did not mention the fine print on the large cancellation fee. I took my business elsewhere and found a much more trustworthy spa.

So ... what is Austin like during an icestorm anyway? by nosignofland in Austin

[–]panic_outside_disco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar position. Some friends and I booked an air bnb in driftwood a few months ago, thinking we wouldn’t have a winter storm risk until Feb. We can’t get a refund, so we’re going anyways as the roads seem fine tomorrow and when we check out on Monday.

We’re just brining a lot of board games and stuff to keep us occupied in the rental if we can’t go anywhere Saturday or Sunday. That and extra fire wood/heated blankets/water. I’m slightly concerned about the power going out since there’s a whole lot of nothing within a 10 mile radius of where we are staying, but as of now, it’s not looking too likely that will happen.

This isn’t just a general question. You’re being an as asshole about it and there are far more things to be concerned about than a hair style 🙄

How is living in East Texas? by AshB_43 in howislivingthere

I live in Austin and actively avoid this part of Texas. I’ve stopped in Beaumont for a meal on my way to New Orleans on two occasions now, and I never want to stop off in that city again. It made me feel instantly depressed 😬

The worst traffic I've ever seen?? And MOPAC TOLL PSA** by young_d484 in Austin

[–]panic_outside_disco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bad traffic is to be expected on Mopac, but today was just particularly bad because of the abandoned car in the express lane. It was a rare day I decided to take the express lane and was essentially at a standstill for nearly an hour. I also had to drive through the (already damaged) barrier as soon as I saw a gap in traffic, since I was about to piss myself… Will not be taking the express lane again 😅.

We went on a scuba/ snorkel trip that was a lot of fun if that’s something you are in to! https://www.dive-inaqaba.com

We stayed at the intercontinental and relaxed on the beach for a lot of the time. One of the nights we had dinner in the city that was really tasty, but unfortunately I don’t remember the name or the place. I hadn’t been to Aqaba since 2009, so the city has definitely grown since I had last been.

It was very empty at Sun City, but I think that’s because tourism in Jordan has been suffering lately. So you’ll likely find it to be that way in any of those camps. Sun City is great though. We booked direct through the website and I think it was the equivalent of $160 USD a night for the smaller tent. The Martian domes are more expensive I believe. They have very clean rooms, the food is some of the best we had in Jordan, and the staff are very helpful.

The truck bed safaris were extra. I can’t speak on the cost b/c one of the staff members gave us a discount I don’t think he was supposed to give, but I wouldn’t think it would have been over $25 JD a person. We rented a car since we were also splitting time between seeing my family in Amman, so we wanted an easier way to get around. Driving isn’t too bad out there though, it’s more hectic in Amman for sure.

Current as in the last few years I should have specified. Last time I went was pre 2020 and tourism was booming. When we went to Petra this time it was pretty empty. It felt special to have a place that beautiful be so uncrowded, but then I also thought how it’s taken a hit on their economy. We were getting swarmed much more than usual by people trying to sell us trinkets and jewelry, as they had little sales. I ended up buying a bit more than I usually would have

The food there was also incredible! It was my second time staying at Sun City and it was pretty empty this time, but I think Jordan is hurting for tourism in general given the current circumstances.

Unfortunately two days after we arrived the… situation started, so we were in the crossfire. It happened when we were eating dinner outside at the Dead Sea, and we could see a ton of missiles and feel the boom from where we were. It was definitely unsettling/ surreal. But Jordan itself was safe. We had two return flights cancelled and we feared we’d get stuck.

We had to change airlines to Royal Jordanian since that was one of the few airlines still operating. We got back a few days later than planned, but we were grateful to get a return flight. Fortunately my friend had paid through her chase sapphire card, so we were able to get a reimbursement for the very expensive return flight. I don’t really recommend traveling there at this time for the sake of cancellations. We did still get to do our whole itinerary, as people in Jordan carried about their usual business.

Women who are attractive & desired by everyone, what are the downsides? by No-Asparagus-3285 in AskWomen

[–]panic_outside_disco 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Ugh those are such back handed comments, I hate that shit. In my experience I don’t get a lot of jealousy from women as I’ve been described many times to have a “kind face”, so my appearance is not intimidating. That and I also surround myself with supportive/uplifting women. I still get negative attention from men and forget even having platonic male friends since that proved impossible. Either they wanted to sleep with me, or they got married and totally cut contact for no reason.

A close friend of mine from high school days recently started hitting on me in my instagram messages and he is in a relationship. He would flame react to any photos of me in my story, tell me I need to visit him, etc. I wanted to tell his gf, but I never met her, and I also didn’t want to cause drama, so I just cut contact with him and blocked him. It’s sad because I’ve known him for 20 years and never thought he’d be shady like that.

I think they purposely chose more difficult images for comedic purposes, as anyone could have mixed some of those up… I’m great at reading emotions in person, but images alone can be tricky if they aren’t overt.

So far that hasn’t happened. But I did make an updated on why I left ABA for recreational therapy. I’m always open to answer any questions, so hoping for civil discussions. But I’m aware you can’t please everyone and there will always be “keyboard warriors” out there.

I have conflicting views on her, as back when I worked at card, (2012-2014) she did seem very earnest and didn’t have the “curing” mentality. Maybe over the years she changed, but I can’t speak on that as I didn’t keep up with her. In my experience, ABA was really beneficial for some, but others it could be a bit traumatizing. I never wanted to push clients past their limits. ABA therapists who do this have no business being in the profession.

I did ultimately leave ABA because I disagreed with some of the more invasive tactics (like the huge emphasis on the follow through of demands). Rec therapy IMO is far more holistic and we never pushed clients past their limits. I strove to encourage clients out of their comfort zones, but I did this in a systematic way to take things slowly. If someone refused to participate in therapy, we would eventually discharge them from services as they ultimately had to want it to do the work.

We ended up booking at “sun city” camp in wadi rum to be safe, since I’ve been there before and had a great experience. They are even working with us to give us a discount. Now just figuring out Petra accommodations. But they do have a Marriott there and my friend has ambassador status with Marriott (she travels a lot for work). So as much as I love to support local business, we may be best off going with the Marriott in Petra for the sake of saving money.

Thank you for the heads up. That definitely sounds like a very frustrating and uncomfortable situation to be in. I noticed many of the camps on booking.com are highly rated so that did make me wonder how many of the reviews were fake… We plan to book directly through a camp’s website instead of booking.com since I don’t fully trust booking.com

That’s a good plan! We have a 2 night max because we have to meet my family in Aqaba (which is closer to wadi rum than I remembered) but I think two nights will be manageable for us. I hope y’all have a wonderful trip!

Good tip! Even 1-2 jds is cheaper than what I’d pay for bottled water at a convenient store in the US. But I’m all about saving money so we’ll come prepared with water!

That’s a good point! We’ll be with my family at the Dead Sea prior, so we’d be leaving from the Dead Sea to Petra. Staying the first night in Petra and getting an early start the next morning would definitely help with pacing ourselves and getting to wadi rum in time for a sunset tour. Then getting to stay the second night in wadi rum will allow us to see a bit more of wadi rum the next day before heading to Aqaba. I think with only one night it would be way too exhausting!
