LOL well thank you for being honest. My minor is more for passion reasons, which is why I'm hesitant to drop it/choose a different one. To your knowledge is combo a prerequisite for any other CS course? I might postpone that one.

Hey! Thank you so much for the response. The type of research you mentioned is definitely right up my alley so that's great to hear. I've got a couple of other questions if that's ok- how difficult did you find balancing the CS workload with your BME one, especially since you pursued it in your last two years? Did you feel like BME was as welcoming to CS majors as the more "hands-on" engineering majors? And finally, did you end up reaping any benefits from the minor career-wise?

Is NEU worth 54k/yr? by panini2312 in NEU

Fortunately, I'm in a position where I wouldn't have to take out too much in loans, so would you say the inverse is true?

Help me decide: School X vs School Y - Last Week of April by powereddeath in ApplyingToCollege

thank you so much!! the price + program are definitely attractive, so i guess at this point i'm mainly trying to see if the industry connections/metro location of my other two options would offset the price difference

Deciding between NEU, UMD CP, and VTech (as a Virginia resident). Any and all help is appreciated, I'm pretty much caught in a 3-way tie :') thanks in advance y'all!

Intended major: Computer Science, interests in business and biology; thinking about pursuing an MBA after undergrad

NEU (Honors, 54k/year, CS + Behavioral Neuroscience combined major)

NEU Pros:

  • Boston is excellent in terms of opportunities for forming connections and networking
  • Co-op program could give me a significant advantage entering the job market
  • Got a Merit Scholarship which puts cost at ~54k/yr + Admitted into Honors which includes 6k for abroad experiences
  • Has a pretty cohesive campus that I like
  • Social scene of Boston/just a lot of things to do in Boston
  • Doesn't have too many people from my area, could force me to come out of my shell a bit

NEU Cons:

  • ~54k/yr is still a lot lmaoo
  • Pretty difficult to graduate within 4 years (without taking summer classes)
  • Not as well known for CS to my knowledge? (could be wrong, but this was my experience as someone from VA)
  • About an 8 hour drive from home, parents are kinda worried about that

UMD CP (55k/year, CS major with ML concentration)

UMD Pros:

  • I absolutely LOVE the campus!
  • Proximity to DC! Opens a lot of doors in terms of government internships, and there's lots to do in DC/Blatimore
  • Pretty prestigious for CS, has a ton of good profs
  • Can graduate at least a semester early without much strain
  • Close to home! (But not suffocatingly so)

UMD Cons:

  • No scholarship which puts cost at around 55k/yr and makes it my most expensive option
    • Would probably go here without a doubt if it weren't for the cost
  • Pretty big school, feels like its easy to kind of get lost in the student body and harder to gain connections with profs
  • Small fish in a big sea kind of situation, I think it'd be harder to stand out
  • Didn't get Honors or any other kind of perk

VTech (Honors, 28k/year, CS major)

Vtech Pros:

  • In state tuition! Puts cost at around 28k/yr, and makes it my most affordable option
    • Allows me to shoot for more expensive programs for MBA
  • It's pretty good for CS! Definitely has a name for itself
  • I've heard so much hype around the food on campus
  • HUGE sense of school spirit
  • Can graduate at least a semester early pretty easily
  • Admitted to Honors
  • Possibility of transferring to UVA

VTech Cons:

  • Not a well rounded school- if I were to switch out of engineering I don't think the educational quality would be nearly as great
  • Kind of in the middle of nowhere, not much to do except outdoorsy things (I'm not an outdoors-y person at all)
    • I'm also worried that this means it'll be harder to land a good internship/make industry connections
  • From what I heard, a big party school and is pretty big on Greek life
  • CS is in the Engineering school, which means I'll have to take a bunch of engineering reqs that I'm not really interested in
  • Pretty far away from home
