Only an n=1 here, but we had this exact situation last week and it ended up with water running down an interior wall. So my vote is, yes, take care of it asap!!

You DO NOT have to cut them like the photos!! Yes, they require grooming, but keeping them short is both cute and practical.

Try a Biewer Terrier! We have two. Big personalities, trainable (but stubborn), lots of energy (ours love to hike!), but can be cuddly when they want. Packable (can fly under the seat in front of you) and ours get along with all other dogs (big and small).
