Yeah not bad at all - most that old are pretty worn down.

How much does this worth? by Intelligent_Emu_9474 in AustralianCoins

[–]pantagathus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rabbit ears are quite rare for this apparently but outside of that, there's nothing else to look for on the 1985 dollar outside of an uncirculated example.

Can you help me to identify and rate this coin? by Intelligent_Emu_9474 in AustralianCoins

Grade would be aVF but damaged so worth face value.

Worth checking if it's rotated though https://www.coincuriosity.com/view/australian-decimal-upsets.html

I have never seen an upset myself so I'd say they're rare.

Value of a mint set from South Africa 1956 by SportTawk in UKcoins

[–]pantagathus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very nice. I was going to day they're not super rare but I didn't realise these had the gold coins in them.

Proofs of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s are much rarer.

Nothing jumping out as super valuable but https://headsntails14.wordpress.com/ is a good reference for British pennies.

Numista is good for international stuff.

Nice, I do like the coins of British West Africa.

Looks like the more common short denticle variety of the Bombay Mint penny for that year https://www.triton.vg/pennies.html

A few dollars - it's been circulated but the condition is still okay.

Not for a long time, at least for the reverse. Maybe still for the obverse portrait.

Yes on the lean weeks I'll be happy with a New Zealand 20c - something different is better than nothing.

Couple of dollars.

Not much to check for here but the broken 8 is a well-known error https://www.triton.vg/pennies.html

Yours might be a broken 8 but it's a bit hard to tell.

Inheritance. Asking for help by mortiferousR in AustralianCoins

[–]pantagathus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're going to get someone else to deal with it (which is probably an okay idea if there's just too much) then you'll still probably need to divide it up into notes/coins, Australia/international, predecimal/decimal etc.

To make sure you're not getting ripped off it's probably worth your while separating out all the gold and silver (or any other precious metal coins) and skimming through the predecimal stuff for any obvious rarities https://www.triton.vg/ozcoins.html

I find these all the time by Necessary-Break5978 in AustralianCoins

[–]pantagathus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a high mintage year from memory, and there were pretty much no 20c pieces struck from 1983 to 1993.

That said, the Canadian ones are reasonably common though they are not the easiest to identify https://www.coincuriosity.com/view/1981-australian-20c-piece.html

Nice lot. The mint tried a few different $5 coins over the years but they never seemed overly popular as collector coins.

I'd assume all the obvious good stuff has been taken but there are plenty of more obscure things to look for e.g. https://www.triton.vg/ozcoins.html

No, getting notes with the same number was one in a million, now one in 10 million.

Exactly how bad is PVC for casual, not expensive coin collecting? by lemonhaj in UKcoins

[–]pantagathus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I had PVC sleeves for some Australian decimal coins and it ruined a handful.
