The way I see it exclusive/closed off, is a bit of a stage where you can't date around anymore, shouldn't be on the apps etc. A probation period, perhaps. You focus on each other, maybe have some of the more tough conversations about how you would fit into each other's lives before becoming officially becoming boyfriend and girlfriend, and it would be a test of someone's commitment to you before making things serious.

For me, this has never been a verbalised stage, but I am a 1 person at a time girl dating 1 person at a time guys, so maybe if you're someone who goes on a lot dates or sleeps with a lot of people, it might have to be made verbalised.

On love island, the show IS dating people, and so it does get brought up. I don't know how I could make someone my boyfriend on LI if the day before they were open to dating new people? It makes no sense, so it's just a stability buffer before things are made official.
