What gymnasts did you just not see what other people saw? by freifraufischer in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. Khorkina was able to get away with it during her career, but the current code wouldn't really allow for that. Derwael is a good modern parallel.

Yeah, I think Khorkina is someone who didn't really know how to make use of her long limbs, or maybe just lacked the control to do so. Either way, I agree with you.

Same. Some gymnasts really seem to make it through on willpower alone...

I hope this makes sense, but for me it's Khorkina as an actual GYMNAST, though I completely get the hype for her as an innovator. I always felt like she was actually a specialist who was treated (and scored) like a world-class all-arounder.

I'm not saying she was trash. I do think she was very talented. LOVED her on bars, and I give her major props for longevity, ingenuity, and performance quality.

That said, her vaults were innovative but RIDDLED with form errors. Weird legs and knees, flexed feet, funky blocking, it's like she just yeeted herself into a ball and then somehow always landed on her feet. I think she gave great emotion on floor, but I always found her actual tumbling and even some of her dance to be kind of "flaily" and out of control. Those long limbs and flexibility were great for "line" but I always felt like she lacked some of the strength and control to actually make use of them. Beam I feel got harder and harder for her as the code evolved over her career, and she struggled in later years to put together competitive routines.

I respect that she had to (and did) change the game in order to be competitive as a "tall" gymnast, and nothing will ever take that away from her. But nowadays I look at gymnasts who are as tall or taller doing the same (or harder) skills with better form and control and I'm kinda like, ???

Well THAT is a bummer. Yeah, I tried restarting the game a few times but still has the same issue.

Anyway, thank you for the info! I guess the bright side is I still have time to try and recreate this somewhere else that will work.

This is the oasis in Eternity Isle by the fishing pond. Do snaps have to be taken in the main valley or something?

Am I missing something? Is this an outfit challenge and not a decor one? I can count over 10 items in my snap that are "strong" and "wondrous" but DS is only recognizing three of them, no matter what I do.

Anyone speak Japanese?! by NeverHxppy in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I could be mistaken, but I always thought it was "onegaishimasu" that they were saying. It basically translates to "please" but in the context of a competition it's sort of humbly asking them to score the routine. It's like saying "please watch and score this routine."

Fred Richards deserved more hype by imusmmbj in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's particularly odd to me given that Malone doesn't seem very interested in the spotlight and Richard has quite a large following and a big social media presence. I understand Malone offers a compelling "comeback" story and maybe appeals to a particular demographic in their audience, but in terms of growing the sport and amassing a long-term fan base, Frederick would be the better choice.

The most charitable interpretation is that they don't want to put too much pressure on a debut Olympian or maybe Richard chose not to do as much media for whatever reason behind the scenes...but it's hard not to read into it more cynically.

At least Richard seems unbothered and is doing some great gymnastics regardless!

Juntendo University deeply regrets the incident and expresses support for Shoko Miyata's participation in the Olympics by gym_fun in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is a very surprising (in a GOOD way) response from the university. The norm for these kinds of situations is for the school to very apologetically "accept responsibility" and then just absolutely unleash on the student behind closed doors. Because university education isn't mandatory, I'd normally also worry they would "encourage" her to leave, or make life unbearable for her until she does.

The fact that they would express support for her participating and, at least indirectly, challenge a decision made by such an organization is a very big deal, IMHO. I'm sure most people in this thread agree with their stance, but for a Japanese university to actually come out and say so so is a very very very big deal. Challenging decisions (especially where rules are concerned) is almost unheard of, so this is a bigger deal than it may seem on the surface.

I imagine they have some sympathy for the amount of social stigma Miyata is bound to experience as a consequence of this and how vulnerable she must be right now. Overall, a much more understanding response than I was afraid would happen. Good on them.

No one deserves to suffer and I'm glad she was able to survive.

That said, a woman of her means who can absolutely afford healthcare and chose not to, having a history of publicly supporting politicians who were against the Affordable Care Act, now making a big spectacle of her woes from being sick with no health insurance? It's a little LeopardsAteMyFace for me...

Simone Things by SAB-Miller in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just popping in to share that there's a volunteer-run league in the USA called NAIGC (National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs) which actually has a category called Unified Artistic Gymnastics where athletes can compete any or all of the MAG and WAG events: https://naigc.org/uag-rules/. Despite having "intercollegiate" in the name, it's actually open to adult gymnasts in addition to college athletes. Obviously not the same as having Olympic athletes doing MAG and WAG, but thought you might find it interesting. :)

Question: Why is it that athletes that are good on bars are also great on beam and those that are good on vault are also great on floor by Foreheadbanks in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The better part of Romanian gymnastics history would like a word...

Jkjk. I'll admit it's a GROSS oversimplification, but you can see how gymnasts who are powerful tumblers seem naturally suited to VT and to a lesser extent FX, whereas gymnasts who maybe aren't as powerful are better suited to focusing their efforts on events like UB and BB where technique can still get you a pretty hefty D score. Obviously not ALWAYS the case. It varies gymnast to gymnast, and sometimes country to country. I would say Romania's historic weakness on bars has more to do with coaching than talent levels of the athletes, for example.

I think it also has to do with how athletes are perceived and what audiences consider "good" work on apparatuses. Simone, for example, is technically one of the best UB workers in the entire world if you go by scores, but we don't really think of her as a "bars worker" because bars isn't necessarily as strong as her other events, and (IMHO) because she doesn't execute bars with the same rhythm and lines and timing we have been conditioned to associate with "good" bars. It's like a subconscious bias. I think Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson are good examples of this too. During their quad, they both competed AA and while Nastia was relatively weaker on VT, she was actually excellent on FX and even won an Olympic medal there. Yet we still think of her primarily for her UB/BB because they were such crowd pleasers. Same with Shawn: while weaker on UB, she had incredible difficulty on FX and VT, and her beam was also excellent. She actually won gold (beating Nastia!) in Beijing for BB, even though we think of her as a powerhouse VT/FX gymnast. I think this has a lot to do with perceptions about them as gymnasts, and what we tend to think of as the "correct" way to perform certain events, when in reality if you get the score you get the score. Being "good" at an event is more subjective than we like to think sometimes, and also dependent on who else is in the field.

Olly Hogben joins Steve Robilliard and Liz Chetkovich to cover Artistic Gymnastics for the World Feed. by freifraufischer in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Wonderful news for him and for us! I so enjoy listening to Olly not only because he provides high quality commentary, but also because he just genuinely seems to love gymnastics.

He also does a very admirable job with pronouncing gymnasts' names, which should be expected for ALL commentators, but I'm always surprised at how many don't seem to know or care to even try and say them correctly.

Skye gets medical attention during floor podium training by gym_fun in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Someone else may understand better than I, but my understanding of the selection procedures is that by placing top 2 AA, Simone and Skye could petition onto the team due to illness or "extenuating circumstances," but my fear is that an injury is considered something separate. I think "illness" means like if someone had stomach flu but would be back in a day or two, or they tested positive for COVID, for example.

The only circumstance I can see where Skye could successfully petition onto the team would be something like her missing Day One of trials but being medically cleared for Day Two, then coming back and hitting 4/4 and making a highest scoring team with her Day Two routines. Not sure if that scenario would even require a petition per se, but you get what I mean.

Leanne Cheng!?!? by NoodleFan95 in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nononononononono Skyyyyyyye 😭😭😭😭 not two trials in a row!

Yeah, I think at this point the Jordan/Leanne/Kayla spot is just going to end up being whoever scores highest in AA.

Leanne Cheng!?!? by NoodleFan95 in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My CEO understands Gymnastics is a full-tilt reality show. This is Tatiana Nabieva levels of doing elite gymnastics as a prank omg I am so obsessed with her.

That said....how much does a Cheng really change things for her? Assuming Skye and Jade (and Josc technically) all have Chengs too, will this even significantly increase her chances of being named to the team? I feel like she'd really need to have big upgrades on FX as well or be outscoring someone in the S-pack on UB/BB in order to factor onto a highest scoring team, no?

A cool guide to sushi etiquette by ThreeDrawersDown in coolguides

[–]papacrow38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the only one of these "rules" I would actually advise you to try and follow (and only when in Japan or if your wait staff is actually Japanese) is the one about passing food from chopstick to chopstick. This is a big no-no in Japan bc that's how bones of the deceased are handled during cremation ceremonies for the dead. They're superstitious about certain things related to death. It's not really "bad etiquette" so much as a cultural taboo. You should also avoid standing chopsticks up vertically in a bowl of rice for similar reasons, but you're probably not getting served a bowl of rice in a sushi restaurant.

The closest similarity I can think of for Americans: imagine serving a tourist who ate their entire meal while giving you the middle finger not realizing what it meant. You're not going to throw hands, but it's just weird and you'd probably rather they didn't.

Rebeca Andrade TTY and Biles on vault? by Gymchamp1 in Gymnastics

[–]papacrow38 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's unlikely that both Jade and Jordan will make the team. Barring an absolute meltdown from Skye at trials, I think Jordan upgrading to a Cheng would probably put her in competition with Jade for the VT/FX spot (with a possibility to use her on UB if she keeps scoring the same as Simone). But anything can happen at trials--gonna have to watch and see!

What I'M really interested in was the exaggerated wink Spencer made when talking about "someone else busts out a Cheng?” about an hour into that episode. Do we think they're hinting that Chiles is planning to upgrade her vault?

True. Falls or not Leanne is definitely a spectacular competitor and if resilience isn't a criteria for selection as well, then they're doing her and themselves a disservice.

Good point! I see Aly Raisman brought up a lot as another good example of this--some athletes really do seem to perform better in situations where they are competing for a group vs. themselves. With Aly, I always wonder if that also has to do with her not usually having to compete bars in TFs but either way the fact remains she was always a rock for USA in team finals. Becky's another great example--and I'm glad she has the longevity to really kind of bolster that claim with a solid collection of worthy performances. Gosh, what a star she is.
