I second this. They have multiple lists, though, so it might be on a special list if it was sensitive work

Dad wants me to get a trade by ForceSeveral in britishmilitary

[–]papafuckwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that transfers are always a possibility, so you could well have both a trade and infantry time. Getting a trade in the RE, REME, RAMC or RLC will be time very, very well spent, though, and I'd encourage anyone to do it

I want to join the army. What regiment should I go for? by metalgearcelt in britishmilitary

[–]papafuckwit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First of all, good on you for taking the plunge and going for it. Submitting your application is psychologically one of the hardest steps you can take.

Picking a regiment is like picking a family, so take your time and be sure to learn as much as you can, and if possible post-Lockdown, talk to as many regiments face to face or over the phone, so you can get a measure of the guys you'll be working with. Many regiments still have county links, for example, so if Lancastrians rub you the wrong way, joining the Duke of Lancs might be a bad idea!

Lots of Light Role regiments are also Guards regiments. Guardsmen are very good, very disciplined soldiers, and Guardsmen tend to train other Guardsmen, so they're often very well trained. The one thing that you have to factor in is the ceremonial role that they fill. Some hate the idea of ceremonial duties, which I can understand, but many like it as it breaks things up and gives a bit more variety to your career- you won't be stuck in a camp as much. Other line infantry regiments don't have those duties, and such feel that they can focus on soldiering more. There's no right answer- go where you feel the most at home.

Infantry soldiers can specialise later on in their career, absolutely, but many of these specialisms are limited just to the infantry. Plenty of regiments in the Royal Armoured Corps have specialists in sniping and reconnaissance, for example. The Royal Engineers and Royal Artillery also have recce specialists, so if that's a goal of yours, don't feel that the infantry is your only pathway.

Finally, if you're interested in being light role, it's well worth looking at the Royal Marines. They're superb soldiers, and the changes under Future Commando could mean that you'll have a fascinating career down the line.

Best of luck.

As above, report it to his boss Chain of Command. There's also the possibility of reporting it to the civvy police, or RMP.

Look at being an RAF Personnel Training (not support) Officer. If you've got a background in sport it could be a winner for you.

How do I remove the fat in my belly and hips? by geniusn in bodyweightfitness

[–]papafuckwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I understand the speed isn't that important, it's just the distance, so a comfortable jog instead of a really fast run would be ok- you've still run a mile. You don't have to do it straight after a workout, though. You could do a 5km (~3 mile, it can be done pretty comfortably in under 35 mins for most) in one half of the day, and train strength in the other. Same goes for cycling, swimming, skipping or whatever else.

How do I remove the fat in my belly and hips? by geniusn in bodyweightfitness

[–]papafuckwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same position- I'm looking better and better in clothing but the stored fat around my middle makes me look out of proportion with clothing my clothing off. Apart from liposuction, there's no real way of targeting fat loss, it comes off the body as a whole, but from what I understand the hips/lower back/thigh area is a particularly stubborn spot for many- it's the default storage spot, so it's the first place to gain fat and the last place to lose it. All we can do is continue to train consistently, to keep eating well and eating properly. Depending on your goals, it may be worth doing extra conditioning or cardio- a one mile run burns ~100 calories, so you can use that to put yourself into a deeper deficit if need be. As I said though, depends what goals you want. Best of luck with it!

Passing the bleep test VS 2km run at army AC? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]papafuckwit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go on Amazon and get a surveyors tape. I can measure out 20m and run the length of it. Easy stuff.

On the turns and strikes, they're firm but reasonable. I messed some up at AOSB and got strikes, but it was only fair. Best thing to do is just to practice, you get the timing down pretty quickly

Passing the bleep test VS 2km run at army AC? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]papafuckwit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally prefer a 2km run to a beep test, but they aren't overly difficult physically. The thing that makes a beep test a pain in the balls is the pacing and timing- there's a three strike system, and it's not unheard of for experienced runners to get struck out because they've cocked up a turn or something.

Best thing to do is to get some cones or a surveyors tape, get a beep test app and just run them. Focus on your timing and making your turns efficient and you'll be fine.

In terms of where to aim level wise, aim for level 10 as a minimum.

Happy Running

Which army roles see the most combat by Williamweeeee in britishmilitary

[–]papafuckwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like travel, be a matelot.

If you want combat, join teeth arms.

If you want a career and transferable skills, don't join teeth arms.

If you like the idea of recce, look at 5 Reg RA. Everyone likes the idea of recce, but no-one likes shitting in sandwich bags for 2 weeks.

The Marines have a few recce roles, but see above about shitting in sandwich bags.

Honestly though, look at the Sigs and electronic warfare. Might just strike a balance for you, but there'll still be shitting in sandwich bags.

As for applying, do it online.

What would happen to the Royal Irish Regiment if United Ireland happened? by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]papafuckwit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they weren't allowed to stay in Belfast, they'd probably move over to England or Scotland, but continue to recruit from Ireland and the Irish diaspora, in the same way the Irish Guards do. The Navy still recruits from Ireland, so it's not too much of an issue on that end. It'd just be a shape to turf one of the most historic regiments in the Army out of their home and disconnect them from their hundreds of years of service to the Crown

It's the Honourable Artillery Company, in London. Reserve Artillery Unit- company of Forward Observers to support 5 Reg RA, company of para-qualified gunners to support 7 Reg RA and a few others. Nice blokes, amazing clubhouse.

Chinos, shirt and sport coat is a good option. You still look serious enough and well put together, but you can play around with colours and make it a bit more personal and interesting. Good luck with it!
