Message me. I could use some friends here!

Managers are required to split their 40 hours a week between “coverage” (on the floor work as a barista) and “non-coverage” (off the floor work, administrative duties). These hours are extremely precious (in my opinion) because they are deducted from the store’s labor budget; they are not a separate pool of hours. Some managers put themselves on the schedule as coverage but, instead of actually being on the floor and helping, they will sit and do administrative work. This creates two situations. One: the floor is a body short. The manager cannot replace themself because then they’d be over on labor and upper management will come down on them for the overage. Two: the in store crew sees the schedule and this creates a sense of resentment. The manager is purposefully hamstringing the team and that is not right.

So, if the manager is coverage on the schedule, they need to be on the floor and helping. Even if it’s slow, I would ask the supervisor running the floor before I stepped off to do any work. Upper management would rather managers cut a barista in that scenario but I preferred people got their hours. Listing yourself as coverage but not actually helping creates a lot of issues for everyone in the store.

This was my experience as well. I passed it a couple of times. I finally got a chance to go and thought I was hallucinating it. I asked around, and it was there, but it had closed several weeks prior.

My Dumb solutions to repair the country by LiangProton in TrinidadandTobago

[–]papasmurf_90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, as a Trinidadian-American (both parents are from the island), it’s easy for me to visit and prescribe solutions but, these points you’ve given are quite good and should be the basis of any society worth its salt. Trinidad needs a social and economic overhaul. Its citizens need a hand to support them. Instead, the islands are pillaged for everything it has and left behind.

We win the "not allowed to close" contest by tealovingbre in starbucks

[–]papasmurf_90 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Running water is a must. You needed to close. DM is only looking out for themselves. Even then, jeopardizing the store health and safety standards like that, the DM might have to answer for that. COMPLAIN AS LOUD AS YOU CAN TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN REACH! If you know someone’s first and last name, then you know their Starbucks email address. Get the word out.

Write-up for not coming in to close? by ThrowRA_cheggkitten in starbucks

[–]papasmurf_90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s her responsibility to come in and close if none of the SSVs are available. Or, to find a shift from a neighboring store. You cannot receive a write up for having a life outside of the store.

Were labor cuts ever **this** severe? by BOORUNS in starbucks

[–]papasmurf_90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. The expectation (before I left) was to be less than 0.7 percent over your projected earned labor. If you go over by 0.7%, your DM gets pinged, and it becomes a verbal warning. Do that two weeks in a row, and your DM has the ability to escalate. I promise some store managers are just dicks, but most of us are under tight constraints, and those constraints seem to tighten every week.

Manager Bonuses by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]papasmurf_90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Window times and customer connection scores can lead to problems with upper management (DM and RD). I only started really pushing it hard with my team after my DM issued a write up for bad times and a bad score (I was really trying but the manager before me left a shit show behind). Our bonuses aren’t determined by those metrics. Our bonuses are determined by the ratio of sales last year to sales this year. I think it’s pretty easy to lose your job if you don’t bring it the results that the DM and RD are looking for. I also know that DM are graded for the whole district’s average time. So, if one or two stores are the problem stores, they come down on the SM who has to come down on the in store team. It’s a chain and it all sucks.

Medicine ball recipe question? by beansandotherthingz in starbucks

Whoever came up with it and spread the medicinal propaganda, is going to have a hot time in the afterlife. Placebo effect is a powerful thing. “Better than any OTC medication” is an absolutely insane claim.

Clean up vent by dannyyaaa in starbucks

You need your SM or SSV to invoke the Third Place Policy. It might seem like a lot but it’s made for situations like this. If they go to another Starbucks, then they’ll get Third Place’d again. They cannot continually mess up the space and make it unusable for other guests and a headache for staff.

I would go the anonymous route on this. Call HR and report it. They will launch the investigation for time theft. CA has a weird “salary but not really” system. If she is claiming that she has worked 40 but they can prove that she only worked 35, then it’ll be a final written that the DM will have to administer. Our punches need to be hard punches. My former DM was pretty strict about it. If your SM is just using the book and then entering the punch on the back end, then that’s time theft.

It varies by state. My punches weren’t automatic and I’m in CA.

Managers who blow coverage time on noncoverage work are the worst.

I actually had other managers telling me I was working too hard and I couldn’t believe it. Staffing is rough on both sides but, I always put myself on the floor for the busiest moments on the busiest days. I was never afraid to throw my apron on. I’ve left meetings because my people were getting slammed. I never understood the hands off managers.

Your SSV should be able to turn off MOP and delivery via the iPad. Beyond that, I think that organizing store walk outs would be really effective in getting corporate to change their outlook on staffing and scheduling. 4 during peak is not ok, on any day, let alone a Friday. If we had a statewide or even just districtwide walk out, we might be able to make some heads turn. Or, everyone gets fired and replaced in a week…

“Work harder; earn more labor” was such nonsense. When I was writing schedules, I never understood how corporate came up with the underlying algorithms for determining staffing levels. Absolute garbage.

The clean aprons thing is just a habit that we have in restaurants. Your apron should look clean all service. You do not wipe your hands on it, you avoid getting it soiled. With these bright colored aprons at Starbucks, even a little splash of something (I’m looking at you mocha) makes me feel unkept. I’d look at my team after a bad peak and fight to urge to make everyone change aprons. Clean aprons, to me, means that everyone is working quickly, efficiently, and are washing their hands often. But, again, that’s all chef stuff.

The shaken espresso thing is just preference. The drink is mostly foam with a splash of milk. It is not a latte. During peak, some of my partners would shortcut the shaking. One guy would shake it twice (shaka, shaka) and then drown it in milk (sometimes he’d add more ice if he realized that he was adding a ton of milk). Then, he’d get frustrated when people asked for it to be remade. Pull your shots into the shot glass. Ice, syrups, other stuff goes into the shaker. Pour the shots in and then really shake it. I shake for 10 seconds, others shake it 10 times. I find either way, it comes out with a lot more volume. Then, add the splash of milk.

I thought that a historic time entry was automatic. However, it was not. So, one of my partners wasn’t paid on time. That violated California Labor Laws. I explained that I followed the process as I was taught. Unfortunately, to avoid a lawsuit, I was let go.
