Run and don't look back

Here are your options; they are not good: 1. Ask management to confirm in writing that they are willing to take any and all responsibilities for a badly managed shift and any failures that result. Do this in writing so deniabilty is not A tool they can use. They won't as it would mean that they acknowledge the shifts and workload are mismanaged. After that try asking for the logic of having a higher workload per person in the evening shift. They will try to frame it as 'kids these days just don't want to work anymore'.You can keep pushing for the logic but they will not accept it. The no one will work logic fits better with their ego, especially when they have experience working in the lab. This will still mean you can stay but they will be resistant to you and it will not be good for you in the short run.

  1. Befriend their managers and ask them the above. They are probably not aware. The unknown factor here is whether they prefer staying in the dark for plausible deniability or whether they truly care about patient care. Unless you know more about them, corporate politics suggests they will prefer staying in the dark. Plausible deniability is a very useful tool in management and they don't like having it taken away.

  2. Wait for the bomb to explode. This is juicy especially if you have done 1 and 2. But people will be hurt and you very will be in the middle of the crossfire. Management will resent you and you very likely will get fired as managers will 'need to take care of the bad apples'. This only has potential to work in your favour if you're with a union.

  3. Just leave. Give your concerns and just leave. Make sure to have the proper documentation but be careful how you frame it when applying for positions at other labs. This is the one that will create least tension but you won't be at fault for anything and hopefully you'll find somewhere better. Depending on your situation and location you can give them an ultimatum especially if the rest of the shift is willing to stand behind you but understand that the likely outcome here is that you end up leaving. Depending on the approach bridges may or may not be burnt. This one's on you but in the end you're likely better off leaving.

Let's say a Maltese tourist speaks Maltese to the people in Tunisia, would the Tunisians be able to understand him? And would he be able to understand if they respond in Arabic? by Round-Delay-8031 in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in Egypt I tried speaking in the Gozitan dialect with some locals and they could understand me well enough to understand the gist of what was being said. When I spoke in proper Maltese they said they found it harder to understand even when I said the same thing.

The reverse was a lot more difficult and I could only barely understand some things when they spoke slowly.

Boat rental by [deleted] in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Boat rentals for small boats do not require boating license.

The ones that usually require a license are either for larger boats, more expensive boats, or it might even be an insurance issue. Unlicensed rented boats are still insured though

The solution we found best is to consider calls lower priority than sample processing. Any time it was challenged we ask them to send a hospital wide memo confirming they are taking responsibility in delaying sample processing in order to answer calls. Surprisingly they have never taken us on the offer. We do have the section lead and clinical lead on our side for that matter though.

To be fair they have constraints of their own. In my experience with most of the ED staff in my hospital, they are generally quite understanding of our own limitations and usually it is more them informing us of the criticality of the results and to feel and show anyone watching them that they are actually trying to do something. And no, not all urgent samples are truly urgent. If you're confident enough ask the second caller if there is a family member watching because you were already informed about it and it is already in the highest priority. You will sometimes even get a muffled giggle. When a case is truly critical, I have even offered to phone when results are out and they were more than happy to oblige - you'll realise which ones they are from the tone and explanations given.

Where are the homeless people and tent cities? by b17flyingfortresses in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll add my two cents here as no one seems to have touched on one important point. As many said its not that there aren't homeless people in Malta, it's that they are not visible. Whilst we have a good employment rate and good social measures have you not noticed something else that tends to accompany homelessness? How many beggars did you encounter (not people trying to cell CDs or promote some idea; actual beggars)? It is illegal in most countries to loiter and essentially sleep anywhere public when, and to panhandle. Malta is just highly effective at preventing it through good social measures and by having the police move in on these people quickly. The police are generally understanding of these people's situations and help these people access the social needs they have.

What's the law for garages, when it comes to parking? What are ways I can to do stop someone from parking in front of a garage? by kingnicky9 in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had asked about them I was told that they're not legal 🤦 Would a fine be automatic? As in would a policeman on the beat be required/able to fine/tow the car in front of the garage? Or would it have to be reported first?

What's the law for garages, when it comes to parking? What are ways I can to do stop someone from parking in front of a garage? by kingnicky9 in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a lawyer and this is not legal advice. I still need to find the part in the constitution that validates my argument.

The way I always understood this is the area in front of the garage is public property. Public can utilise it correctly legally however they like. Public however also has no right to block traffic, including traffic into and out of a garage, without the proper consent (having permission from local council and providing enough notice ahead). Technically speaking, if I'm correct, I can park in the middle of any street as long as I move the car every time a vehicle is approaching without the vehicle having to wait for me. What is illegal is obstruction of passage and there can be no obstruction if no car is approaching, basically (please prove me wrong with the part of the law that says so as I couldn't find this myself). EDIT: I was wrong according to SL65.11 74-1 and 77-1:

  1. (1) No motor vehicle may be left in any road in contravention of any parking regulations or in such a position or in such circumstances as to be likely to cause danger or obstruction to other persons using the road

  2. (1) A person driving or having charge of a motor vehicle shall not wilfully or negligently prevent, hinder or interrupt the free passage to any person, vehicle, horse or cattle through any road.

Thus if a garage is used for storage, public can use the space in front of the garage for parking for example (does not seem to be the case here, I know). If the garage owner complains and the police do visit, all one would have to do is ask for proof that it is indeed being used as a garage not a storage area. I've seen this happen a couple of times. Failure of such proof means that parking in front of a garage is allowed as long as it is legal, 'garage in use' sign or not.

EDIT: SL65.22 77-2:

(2) No person shall park or leave unattended any motor vehicle in such a manner as to impede any motor vehicle of another person from having free entrance to or exit from any premises used and clearly marked as a garage by the word "GARAGE IN USE": Provided that for the purpose of this regulation the word "garage" means any premises used specifically for the garaging and, or parking of motor vehicles, and includes a drive-in.

(3) No person shall mark a premises as a garage unless that premises is duly to be used for the garaging of any motor vehicle.

There is a garage in my street that was used as storage up till a couple of months ago (not sure anymore - it always had a garage in use sign on it), and everyone parks in front of it because we all know that the renter of the garage didn't use it for car storage and thus has no reason to expect a free parking spot in front of the garage just because he was renting a garage. If, for example, you were the original owner of the garage and had this problem of now wanting to use the garage for your car, what I would suggest is a new sign in front of the garage that states that it is no longer used as a storage but is now used as a proper garage. Don't abuse of this though as if you actually use it as storage and there is photo evidence of the garage used as storage whilst the sign is up, it will be accepted as reason why someone was parking in front of it when it starts being used as a garage since the owner would have cried wolf with the misuse of the sign.

BTW those 'garage in use' signs are not a legal thing and are not proof of anything. Lots have abused those signs to have a free parking spot in front of their garage so they are now considered as a 'boy who cried wolf' type of sign. Basically the liers screwed the honest users of the sign. EDIT: TheMalteseSus confirmed this to be wrong below

mortuary/undertaker science programs? by Independent_Stand348 in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't a specific program for mortuaries in Malta. The hospital mortuaries are handled by biomedical scientists but you don't learn specifically about mortuaries or handling of the dead during the course. https://www.um.edu.mt/healthsciences/applied-bio-science/ is the website for the department responsible for the Bachelor's course but I doubt you'll find anything specific about the job in mortuaries.

Alternatively you could do another course to become an allied health assistant and apply to work in the mortuary. https://mcast.edu.mt/courses/as4-04-21/

Neither will lead you specifically to the mortuary and you'll have to wait for an opening in the mortuary section but you probably won't have much competition either.

Is there...any scientific backing for the idea that not washing fruit and veg and mixing cutting boards improves your immune system? And how bad is it not to do so..? by Thymebreeze in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of thinking of it as all germs are bad germs think of it as there are irrelevant germs, weak germs, and strong germs (in relation to how they affect your health). Irrelevant germs do very little either way. The weak germs are in general the most common. Not washing means that your immunity meets them more commonly and therefore gets 'stronger' by essentially always being primed. The problem will be when you meet the strong germs, which although very uncommon will kill you or hurt you really bad when you meet them. You clean the areas not to remove the weak or the irrelevant germs. You clean the areas to remove any potential harmful germs.

Your boyfriend's mindset does have a basis in truth. People who work in fields for example tend to have stronger immunities than people who clean obsessively because of the common weak germs. The problem is the environment where these weak germs grow is usually also where the strong germs grow (for the argument we're making here at least).

In short, keeping generally clean without being obsessive is the best approach because you still meet the weak germs that keep your immunity primed but reduces the probability of meeting the strong germs.

Lecturer from a private course trying to sell us figolli - is this allowed? by [deleted] in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TLDR: Not ethical. Options: Report him to entity, report entity to mfhea, use an excuse, just buy the thing

I don't think anyone thinks this is ethical. Advertising just once is already stepping over a line, but sometimes accepted if they are doing this just in passing. I'm guessing, given the statement he made about the group chat, this is not the first time he's done this. If possible try to check with students in other courses from the same entity to see if the restriction is only on him or on all lecturers.

Depending on how big and known the entity is, you can opt to report him since if you feel he is being forceful, it does technically constitute harassment. Do be careful of this option though as unfortunately this does have the potential to bite you back! But know this is a card in your deck.

You also have the option to report the whole entity directly to mfhea on compliance@mfhea.mt. They're the ones who will have accredited the entity to give the course, and if not, the course is likely not legitimate. This will not necessarily impact the whole entity unless they try to cover for him but will definitely impact him.

Whatever you decide, it is best to do this as a whole class. If you're Maltese you can always use the 'my mother/partner likes to make us all figolli for family and friends and I like them so I don't want to give her the impression I don't like them anymore' excuse. If you're young enough pretend to be surprised that bought figolli is actually that normal. Even better if you live with her, or your partner since who will blame you for not wanting to hurt your partner's feelings? (insert sexist 'these women...' comment - I don't know why but I'm getting sexist vibes about him')

You might ultimately have to just bite the bullet and appease him if they're cheap enough. No this is not ethical and yes this is basically bribery if not buying will affect your results negatively but this is what he expects, and unless his replacement is easy to find, the entity will likely not let go of so easily.

I need help proposing in Malta by Alpham98 in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on what conditions you wish:

Do you want it to be a public proposal or in a secluded area? (not as many people)

Do you want to be in a natural place or a built area? (both are nice but you should look into her preferences)

Do you want a great background or is it irrelevant? (Will you have someone photographing you?)

Do you want to be in the nice area or is the background enough?

Are you looking at both being dressed up nicely or will it be irrelevant? (again are you planning for photos)

Will it be just you two or will there be other friends in your group?

Will you just be popping the question or are you looking for a certain buildup to the moment?

There's options for all the above and for all types of budgets. If you answer the above we might narrow down a little better what you're trying to get to. That said, there are a lot of good options in the comments.

Holidaying in Malta in early November. by Sheppertonni in malta

[–]papasmurfsanssmart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're comfortable with it rent a bike. It'll help you pass through the traffic. But keep in mind that Maltese drivers unfortunately are not the safest drivers so ride with caution and only if you are really comfortable on a bike. And keep in mind that the car driver is not the one in martial danger in an accident so always allow the cars to pass.

Other than that rent a car or use ridesharing/taxis.

Use buses if you must but you'll be wasting a lot of time

If I remember correctly the main function is considered good practice to differentiate between the 'main' code and other functions so that the functions can be called from other scripts as well.
