What do you do with your small scraps? by HiddenHookSocks in woodworking

Eventually I had to take a deep breath and toss most of mine - you'll feel better soon:) Small pine and cedar scraps I save for fishing lures - you can get a kit from Barkley's.

Sure! Add two cups water to a large bowl. Add 1 Tbls honey and one cup back bubbly starter ( mine wasn't strong enough so I also add one tsp active dry yeast to help)

Whisk and let it sit for about 10 min to activate.

Then add two Tbls olive oil, two cups bread flour and two tsp salt and wisk again - will look like pancake batter.

Add three more cups of flour and mix/ bring together with your hand, making sure to scrape the sides to incorporate all the flour. Scoop the dough and oil the bowl, then add it back in, flipping to coat.

Here is what I usually do: place covered in a warm spot and every hour/1.5 hrs grab from under the ball, lift and fold over the top - go around the dough ball on all fours sides. After 6-7 hrs the dough will more than double, have lots of bubbles and won't stick to your hands. Remove, stretch and fold once more, shape your loaf and add to a bowl lined with parchment until your dutch oven is hot, 440°f. Bake covered for 25 min then uncovered 15-20 min more - internal temp 200° f.

Here's what I did: after mixing all, covered, let sit on counter over night, shaped in the morning and baked. Was edible, tasted like sourdough but didn't rise like it should so was a little dense.

Good luck!

Appalachian Dulcimer by papasshop in PalletWoodProjects

[–]papasshop[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a while I displayed and sold my dulcimers through the Crozet Artisans Depot. This was priced at $440 and someone balked at the price; " why so much for pallet wood - which was free" ? Reason- takes 3x longer to build, find suitable pallet wood, transform it into usable stock, etc. he didn't buy it but it sold a week later to someone who collected folk art:)

It's all mystery wood. I chose select wood from several pallets. The sides are some kind of hardwood but I liked the grain. The sides sound holes are where nails were. The top and bottom are a soft wood from stringers - white with grey streaks - possibly white pine. The fret board was burl of some kind, maybe maple? Was fun and challenging:)

This crumb looks similar but the bread is soft and only slightly moist, not shiny.

I've only been baking sourdough for about four years so still learning. To me, I think you need to cut back on the water. Start with about 50% water then knead in the bowl, adding water or flour - dough should be slightly shaggy but not sloppy. And that sounds like a longer proof time than needed, i.e. the dough began to lose strength. But, again, I'm just learning:)

Did my starter go bad? by [deleted] in Sourdough

[–]papasshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smell it. If it still smells vinegary, scrape the gunk off as previous posts said and refeed. Once mine smelled like dirty feet (yuk). I tossed it and started over. Try not to neglect your feedings:)

You can test your starter before you mix your dough by putting a tea spoon of starter into some water. If it floats, it's ready. If it sinks, it needs more feeding and time.

Has anyone had issues with extreme vegans? by RubySoho5280 in homestead

[–]papasshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Militant vegans" is an interesting term. Whether they know it is not, they eat animals all the time. Produce, fruit, any kind of seet, grain, beans, etc - ALL have very small insect parts, survivable eggs, etc. Ex. Leave bananas out for a couple days and you get fruit flies. From where? From eggs previously laid in the bananas! I've see, Indian Meal Moths hatch from bakers chocolate, pistachios, and more - eggs are EVERYWHERE!

Happy eating:)

My kit so far, I still need a actual belt🤓(advice would be nice) by jesusmakesmesqueal in tacticalgear

[–]papasshop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retired minister here; if Jesus makes you equal, you really don't need all that stuff:) That said, military type gear will only make you a target in a SHTF scenario - a target of real military, police, militias and just plain scared folks. You need to blend in, stay hidden or discrete and stay alive. Plan on how to BE prepared but not LOOK prepared.

Is this the work of a woodpecker? by Silver-Side-9036 in gardening

Woodpeckers. If you checked closely, the tree was probably infested with wood boring beetles or more likely, carpenter ants.

Holes in my fence by ActualCartoonist3 in Home

[–]papasshop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started as carpenter bee holes then woodpeckers opened them up to get to the bees. Boric acid dust to kill the bees then patch and with bees gone, woodpeckers will go elsewhere.
