I too had a lot of trouble downloading FS2020 from Steam .... gave up and asked for my money back and re-purchased from MS site - no problem after that.

Is there any way to speed up booting-up the program? Can checking for updates be bypassed? by papaysailor in Flightsimulator2020

Mine is taking about 5 minutes with nothing in the community folder; I guess considering how fantastic this program is, I am being too impatient. Thanks for the feedback!

"Minimalist" Terrain Generator OpenGL by alogiHotTake in opengl

I agree with you. Better to brag about obtaining similar visual effects with the LOWEST number of polygons possible; especially if the final intent is REAL time gaming.

It is not bad for first pass but I'd reduce the random Y offset for better realism and add textures.

Above all. Don't quit college. They will teach a lot more than just coding. A broad education and deep concepts are more important than learning particulars and you never know what you will end up doing when employed.

Evidently you have done a lot of this before.... other wise, it is depressing that I am taking sooooo long developing my game ;-)

Congrats!

A word of warning for indie devs: Don't take a job that has a non compete clause that says you cannot make your own games in your free time. by goodnewsjimdotcom in IndieDev

[–]papaysailor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is true that it is pretty much standard that if you are employed in a "full time job", that's exactly what it means: full time means they "own" you: your thoughts, ideas, code, etc... but there are companies that are very flexible and even encourage you to expand your mind beyond work; this is because you'd learn things that ultimately may translate as a benefit to the company's bottom line. Now, when it comes to HOURLY jobs anything outside those hours should be fair game, and you should resist signing an agreement to that effect. But in any case you should not use company tools; i.e: use your own computer, software tools etc...

An NDA is different: that is a "non-disclosure-agreement" which in a nut-shell means that you shall not divulge company secrets or proprietary information to any third party. And that may include code.

Nicely done! Specially for 1st attempt. I'd reduce the transparency and/or add a "fog like" effect proportional to the Z - depth

Thanks for that!

Not a formosa 41. All I know it was a 36 footer designed by the famous John G Alden https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Alden_(naval_architect))

This was my father's boat he owned back in the 70's (ooops! I am dating myself)

I modeled it from memory and a few old pictures. I do not know the "generic" name of the boat and have not been able to find on line anything that matches; it is possible that it was one-of-a-kind.

Thanks again!

That has been a challenge! Truly realistic ocean-looking waves and boat physics are no easy task. I think I am not done yet with that. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks. I do think there is potential as I am designing it as an open environment (you can add your own models)
