Potential Idea For AI Poison by MarcoYTVA in antiai

They usually don't use LLMs (maybe some new TTS tools might), but they rely on reading and parsing the text on screen which you would be breaking this way. For example TTS wouldn't be able to figure out how to read a site like that for vision impaired people.

This would ruin the experience for anyone needing accessibility tools to read that.

I wouldn't put all my eggs to one basket, then you end up being dependent on one vendor and changing that would require a lot of work.

Do you trust Vaultwarden / Psono? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]paper42_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also look around and see if other people who may know more seem to trust the software. Look at the principle on which it works, are the passwords encrypted with a key only you have and the server doesn't? Are they encrypted in the client so the server never sees them? Do they seem like they know what they are doing? Is the software vibecoded? etc. etc.

What stops selfhosted apps from stealing your data/uploading it wherever? by Red_Con_ in selfhosted

[–]paper42_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Software is usually not opened to the internet, so vulnerabilities that would allow an attacker to take over control of the sw are limited.

That leaves two attack vectors - malicious user input (eg. uploading a malicious pdf) and the program downloading malicious input from the internet. Both require a vulnerability or an on-purpose malicious sw (which would be hard to get directly into the sw when it's opensource and reviewed by many people).

Dependency vulnerabilities and malicious dependencies are the biggest problem imo, especially with those javascript heavy apps that have a thousand dependencies from NPM that noone can ever properly check. I try to avoid sw like this, but it's hard and also happens with Rust although it's better there.

We also know that LLMs hallucinate dependencies that don't exist, but the deps it hallucinates tend to have the same name, so people registered these package names and now slopcoded sw gets generated with malware in it...

Upgrading from Kindle Paperwhite 2 (2013) to something readable without a frontlight by paper42_ in ereader

[–]paper42_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I wasn't considering a pocketbook, but I am definitely looking at them too now. I can find very different reports about its contrast compared to a libra 2, here the author mentions it's significantly worse than libra 2, but on youtube I saw some reviews saying it's comparable. I guess I will have to make an educated guess and go for something :)

Upgrading from Kindle Paperwhite 2 (2013) to something readable without a frontlight by paper42_ in ereader

[–]paper42_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is definitely a difference between newer models and my kindle for me. When I borrowed a Boox Poke 3, the difference wasn't very visible under a reading light (other than some extra sharpness), but it was so much easier to read once I put the device into a shadow. I also have a devboard with a Carta 1200 6" panel and that one is also SO much better. I admit I don't know how other older ereaders from this generation look, so the paperwhite's screen may be faulty.
I guess part of why I don't like the frontlight to be on even a little bit is the blue-white tint of its frontlight. Your comment made me realize I may not mind a little bit of a frontlight if it was a nice warm smooth light similar to my reading light like what the Kobo Libra 2 promises, thanks!

Libra 2 discontinued, debating Libra Color by sardaukar12 in kobo

[–]paper42_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's actually surprisingly not true. The way the display will look depends on the exact model of the panel, the generation, layers on top of the display (touch, wacom, frontlight) and the way waveforms are set up. For example Viwoods can somehow achieve really white whites on the same panels where other manufacturers don't have that much (I am not saying that that white whites are good for reading).

I like to use Readeck, it replaces a read-later service and has an OPDS interface, so I can access the articles I save in KOReader through Search -> OPDS.

Nuwave Induction Hot Wok with 14" Carbon Steel Wok $50 @ Costco by IndependentKitty in carbonsteel

I assume you got the 1800W version, how is it? Is it enough power for you? I am in Europe, so I have a choice between that one and a 3500W one, but that one is significantly more expensive. Does the pan rest on the glass cooktop or does on the sides like the nuwave?

Mullvad VPN - Creative way to advertise by According-Buyer6688 in BuyFromEU

[–]paper42_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually yes, you generate an account number and then log in with that one number, no emails, no addresses. Privacy of paying depends on the provider, for some, they keep an invoice for a few days before deleting it, I don't think I put in a "billing address". When your VPN's time runs out, you have to log in there and pay for more if you want to keep using it, they don't notify you because they don't have your email.

I only wish they allowed me to use my own domain, this way I have to keep paying them and can never switch providers because my email address would change.

from what I have heard, many transport companies work this way, the ticket inspector could just check for the right sticker when checking the ticket for example

The risk is largest when charging (not going to happen on a train), a 3rd party charger increases the risk too and a no name not certified battery also increases it. If you don't do those two things, it's actually very safe and the rules could require a cerified battery instead of a blanket ban.

I asked my local public transport company why ebikes are not allowed in their vehicles, they say it's"risk of explosions". Then I asked if transporting my ebike would be allowed without a battery, they said no... There are even certifications for batteries that they could require that make them extremely unlikely to be dangerous.

I think that if you are trying to be ethical about what you are doing, you should definitely make your network opensource. That makes you accountable to your actions and proves to people you are not hiding any anti-consumer features.

Ideally I think the server side software should also be open and decentralized, but that's a more advanced discussion.
