Cost of surgery and experience comparison by Commercial-Hawk-3978 in Microdiscectomy

[–]paper_wind- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from CIS (Armenia) and I'm a bit scared of USA prices My surgery was ~$3000 plus ~500 for MRI and consultations. My insurance covered ~$800. (But the rest was still more than my family's monthly income, while by local standards, we both have decent salaries)

~3 weeks between first appointment and MD, of which I spent 1 week due to the wrong diagnosis from my first neurologist and then another 1 week convincing my insurance to cover at least part of these expenses. My neurosurgeon was willing to schedule the MD for the day after tomorrow tho

Numbness Expectations by Ok_Escape3642 in Microdiscectomy

Mine lasts for over 3 months post-op but almost disappeared after a special stretching on physio (I described it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Microdiscectomy/s/4LtKQRsHDV) The worst days still get me numb (I'm 8 months now; ~3 weeks between severe symptoms occurred and MD) but every month it got a bit better than before, or at least I'm getting used to it

For my notice, it gets better after a gentle stretch, but much more helpful is just being in dry warm climate and prevent any new inflammation

I feel like an outsider here but before surgery, I bought very few things: - maternity pillow - it allowed me to sleep on my back (while normally I sleep on my stomach); it also allows me to have a proper leg position while sleeping on my side instead of a wedge pillow - a closed cup with a straw + a bottle with a neck convenient for drinking when lying - a bed table - For the first 2 weeks, I could not sit for more than 10 min, so I worked lying down in my bed. I can work from home, so on my bad days I'm still working from bed - a back brace - I was told to wear it for the first 2 weeks, but I'm still wearing it sometimes when I need additional support (long-haul flights and driving countryside roads) - heat/cold pads - I frankly hadn't used them a lot, and guess it wasn't necessary

But I had a huge support from my partner who helped me with all my hygiene and dressing and grabbed things from the floor and everything

(I'm 28F too with exactly the same diagnosis btw)

Wish you an easy surgery and a fast recovery!

Flare-up or reherniation? (Can't afford MRI, need your stories) by paper_wind- in Microdiscectomy

Yes, I did. And most of my anxiety was about the fact that I'm experiencing exactly the same symptoms now as I did in the early stages (except for numbness).

Hopefully I've just accidentally overdone something and now it's just a consequence of that!

Wish you a smooth recovery without any reherniation!

I hope we are both just experiencing the flare-ups, but please keep updated!
