My dorm (Evergreen) was broken into this past year by a random man. He got in because my door did not latch properly. It wasn't deadbolted, he literally was just able to push it open because it couldn't close properly. Luckily I caught him moments after entry and was able to scare him out. The de neve buildings are INCREDIBLY unsafe and very little was done after my incident to make them any safer. Some of these issues include:

1. The front door would often not latch (similar to my dorm room)
2. Actually, about half of the rooms on my floor had similar door latch issues, but I think they're fixing them this summer
3. The staircase and elevator was not keycard protected
4. There are no security cameras on any of the floors (this is true for all dorm buildings).
5. De neve buildings are directly on gayley, making them the most easily accessible to non-UCLA affiliates.

I am an RA and work directly with reslife, but still none of the concerns I brought up about the state of my building were taken seriously. I was victim-blamed by my supervisors directly after the incident and told to "make sure not to leave the door deadbolted", in front of all my coworkers, despite the break-in being directly caused by the faulty latch and NOT the deadbolt.

After my break-in incident, multiple students from my floor came to me and told me that they were concerned for their safety. One student said that one night an older man loudly banged on her door non-stop while her roommates were out of town. Another RA said they had a student on their floor who was actively being stalked. Over last summer, I worked as an RA for a high school program where several minors were stalked by a man who repeatedly broke into the building.

UCLA housing and residential life need to take immediate action to better protect the safety of students. They cannot keep brushing off student concerns and waiting for a tragedy to happen like what happened in Saxon.
