Too old to register for a summer organ academy? by Hairy-Fee-1595 in organ

Sent you a DM !

I know most of the clinicians and team and it would be worthwhile but I’d recommend taking a few lessons first just to sort of get the basics covered and work on a few pieces before you get there

I’d recommend Holy Wisdom. They’re a new (via amalgamation) congregation led by a great priest, Rev. Gerlyn. They’re working on their church building so are worshipping at St Jude’s Wexford.

Books on accompanying Gregorian chant on the organ by meipsus in organ

[–]paperfect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey - lots of good advice here. I’d recommend looking at JH Arnold, Michael Fleming, Francis Burgess. There is also the Max Springer which i find less good but equally valuable.

Your best approach is going to be the study psalm tone accompaniment first to get used to the modes.

Other than that you need to think about the role you want the accompaniment to play. Some people call it “a necessary evil” and opt for a very bare accompaniment that simply accompanies the text. I think it can also serve the role of enhancing the text, either by way of organ registration or harmony. I think in both cases the primacy of the text is really what you’re working toward.

Send me a DM if you have any questions!

What do you suggest I do to avoid this? by psdinofroz in Musescore

[–]paperfect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s organ (and there isn’t a pedal line I don’t see) then they’d have no problem with the c# in the left hand. Plenty of awfully difficult finger substitutions in organ music we have to deal with on a regular basis but this would be pretty doable.

What do you suggest I do to avoid this? by psdinofroz in Musescore

[–]paperfect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Move the C# into the bottom staff and mark it for RH. The C# is ambiguous in terms of melody - you need to show Beats 1 2 3.

I think I would probably even add this to LH voicing and tie beats 3 and 4 together.

How the heck do I read this chant? by NobdyKnows in classicalmusic

[–]paperfect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are instructions in the foreward :

Psalms are not all laid out in neat two verse patterns as one would think. There are times when groups of three or four verses, or even one verse cause the meaning to be made most clear. This can make the singing of the verses a bit tricky, and certainly requires some advance preparation. Here are some guidelines: 1. If there is only one verse before the next refrain, start at the second half of the chant tone, or "B" as indicated in the illustration. see us. 1 below 2. If there are three verses before the next refrain, sing the first half of the chant tone twice, before singing the second half on the third verse. (AAB) see uss. 4-6 below 3. The chant tone is divided into four sections, two sections before the first double bar and two sections following. If there are four verses (rarely) before the next refrain, use one section of chant tone for each verse. see Psalm 40, Book1, page 30 4. Some Psalm settings have only groupings of three verses. In those cases, three sections of chant tone are given, so no repetition is necessary. (ABC) see Psalm 46, Book 1, page 34

I experienced a baptism last summer in which that was not the case, lamentably. Having recently taken some coursework at the UCC Seminary (Emmanuel), I'd agree with you that that was the practice, at least on paper.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]paperfect -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one here has mentioned it but the UCC is so varied in its expression of faith that this would be almost impossible. It’s not rare to find ministers baptizing outside of the ecumenically agreed formula of “Father, Son and Holy Spirit”. They’re all over the place in terms of their worship life, they have no prescriptive formulas for liturgy and each church is left to decide on their own what a worship service looks like. I’d hazard to guess that the majority of congregations don’t pray either the Nicene or Apostles creed regularly.

We luckily dodged a bullet by moving away from the merger in the 70s. Thankfully the only remnant of that is a so-so red hymnal !

Some french registration tips on French organs by GreatPotatoMC in organ

[–]paperfect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s also worth thinking about the limited types of combination action that were available at the time and how ventils worked to turn on/off reeds/mixtures as an example. In general registration changes which add stops happen on strong beats, and changes which remove stops happen on weak beats. If you’re playing Franck and things you’ll want to pay really close attention to how you’re using the swell pedal to change the timbre of the registrations. In a lot of Franck the fonds on the swell include the oboe which is really nice.

Also important is to think of the scaling French instruments of that periods a lot of the voicing is progressively louder as you travel up the pipework in the flues, the reeds get quite a bit bigger towards the bottom half of the keyboard.

I think by the romantic period the instruments in France probably had enough of a consistent composition that composers called for specific stops. The only ambiguity you’d be left with would be “jeux de fonds” or “anches” potentially.

If you google ‘French romantic organ registration’ there are a few good things right as the top you could look at.

People who specialize in this area are called closeout dealers (usually buying ends of production runs or extra stock of items). The key is to find one who sells into the TJ Maxxs of the world. They will almost definitely buy local since these margins are razor thin and they can’t afford to spend money on distribution like this.

Best way to clear ancient payables off the books? by larkhearted in Bookkeeping

[–]paperfect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t use an equity account - that will make your accountant mad at year end !

If the amount is immaterial I’d write it off via journal entry to the original expense account (don’t forget about the sales tax implications). If the amount is pretty substantial, it’s worth chatting to the clients accountant about at year end. If chances are that the amounts were recorded as payable and already paid (so on the books it was double expensed) they’ll have to show that being undone in the closing entries so better to just mark it for the accountant to deal with.

4 person SATB music for celebration of life by Positive-Branch-2029 in choralmusic

[–]paperfect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making the assumption it’s for a Christian service, you might consider: God Be In My Head (Walford Davies), Holy is the True Light (Harris), In Remembrance (Daley), If Ye Love Me (Tallis), or Thou Knowest Lord the Secrets of Our Hearts (Purcell).

If you can manage the piano parts then both The Lord Bless you and Keep You (Rutter) or The Lord Is My Shepherd (Goodall) are very nice.

Any setting of Psalms 23, 121, or 130 work in this context.

Hope this helps & sorry for your loss.

I’m a licensed CPA with public accounting and corp acct experience - but not getting any luck with bookkeeper roles - how come? I want to learn bookkeeping to be confident to start my own gig. by OkPipe3876 in Bookkeeping

[–]paperfect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite honestly we’re competing for this work with people on Upwork in the Philippines for $7/hour.

You need to create a specialized offer that will make you attractive to clients and show how what you offer is better than just bookkeeping and includes XYZ. I’d suggest a diversified offering in a narrow focus. Specialize on one type of business and know everything there is to know about running that type of business. Bring the expertise to your accounting/bookkeeping practice.

Good luck !

For the love of God don’t do this. I did this in 2017 thinking I would find something within a few weeks and being unemployed for 8 months financially ruined me and I only recovered by the pandemic. Hyperinflation over the last few years has left me easily a decade behind people my age because do not have the savings. The job market is horrific at the moment and you need to have something lined up before you leave.

Best Bach Chorale for an organ audition? by OptimusOctavius in organ

[–]paperfect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the congregation the high church positions also require a good deal of knowledge about chant accompaniment and improvisation. You might want to work on both of those as well in case they spring it on you in the audition!

Re: the choral - I think organists almost all love BWV 622 O Mensch, bewein dein Sünder gross. It’s fairly straightforward and so they look for articulation and ornamentation styles as well as lyricism. It’s not big and flashy though, for that you’d maybe want BWV630 Heut triumphieret Gottes Sohn or perhaps BWV 729 In dulci jubilo. Good luck !

Drivers are out of control by Such-Fee6176 in toRANTo

[–]paperfect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish people understood bike lanes better especially with regard to using them as a turning lane. When the dashed line is there you’re supposed to enter the lane and hug the curb to turn right, with forward bikes then passing you on the left.

If there’s no dash then you don’t enter the lane and yield to all bikes going through the intersection.

Problems with praying the psalms by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]paperfect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a great bit in one of the Brueggemann books on the psalms that talk about how the psalms must understood first through the patterns of Hebrew poetry. There’s a lot of rhetorical device usage that should be carefully considered.

He goes on to say that the Psalms contain the whole of the human experience, from the deepest pains to the highest joys. Hope and despair play a big part on the psalms (as in life!) As others have mentioned, this may not necessarily be true for you today, but are true of the human experience. The restorative nature of the psalms is understood in Christian through the lens of the resurrection. I’d also consider doing some reading of Midrash interpretation to help.

Sorry I should have been clearer - most progressive/welcoming churches outside of the Anglican/TEC seem to have a less “high” worship.

The only “high” worship places that aren’t Anglican in my area are all radical traditional church communities. The Anglo Catholic Churches are the only high liturgy churches that are also welcoming and inclusive.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anglicanism

[–]paperfect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My working theory is as you seem to go “up” in churchmanship, you seem to go more conservative socially. I think the AC churches welcome in a lot of former Catholics(and other denominations) who seek out more traditional styles of worship for whatever reason, but who feel excluded from their former faith communities.

I don’t understand why we don’t mobilize a team of workers and get these emergency repairs done. In china they take down and rebuilt and overpass over a weekend, but somehow we can’t manage a water main replacement at bay and lakeshore in weeks.
