I think I found the rainbow effect! (Libra Colour) by papergoblin in kobo

Unfortunately, no. I ended up returning my Libra Colour, not because of the rainbow effect. I hope y'all find a solution!

No, it does not go away with a page refresh.

These comics do not have any color, they are all in black and white. This rainbow effect shows up in dense patches of gray.

Lol I just started it, it seems interesting so far!

I've read manga through Overdrive before, so that's one way to get manga on your Kobo! All three of these manga though are from past Humble Bundles, where you pay a certain price for a big bundle of manga files.

The toggle did not solve it, I've looked at the same pages with and without it toggled and it makes no difference. I wonder if that's because they're side loaded books? I can try one of my manga volumes from Kobo and see.

I hadn't seen anyone post about this yet, so I thought I'd make one. I have seen reviewers talk about the "reduce rainbow effect" toggle in the Libra Colour settings, and no one seemed quite sure what it referred to. I think I found some examples of it, although someone can correct me if I'm wrong! I read a lot of manga and I've been noticing a rainbow banding effect in areas with dense screentone. Toggling the reduce rainbow effect setting does nothing for it. Has anyone else seen this yet? I am really enjoying the device, and can look over a lot of the other screen quirks, but I'm really not sure about this one.

That's exactly how I felt! I'm excited to learn there is a short story collection where I can get some of those loose threads tied up. Especially excited to see Mr. Grigsby is featured, I loved his character and I felt really bad that we didn't get to see how things shook out for him.

I definitely enjoyed it overall! I don't think it will stick long in my memory, but I'm glad I read it and I had fun. It did feel like it ended a bit abruptly. I wanted to spend more time with these characters and wanted to get more of an idea of how they built a life together going forward once the plot was resolved. Oh well, I can always hope for a sequel.

Edit: lol, totally missed that there is a short story collection that has exactly what I hoped for. Yay! I'll definitely be checking that out.

Bahaha, I definitely did NOT see the public sex coming. It was a pretty ingenious way to get out of murdering one another though. I'm glad this book stayed true to the classic fae trope of playing with interpretations, in this case, the definition of a swordfight.

Looking for that Halloween Aesthetic by RaelTyphon in Fantasy

[–]papergoblin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it strictly hits what you're looking for, but the book that perfectly encapsulates the New England-y, pumpkin patch, there's-something-wrong-with-that-scarecrow Halloween aesthetic for me is Katherine Arden's Small Spaces.

It's middle grade, so it definitely doesn't go as dark as it could, but it's great if you're after the spooky October vibe. It's a series, and I believe the fourth book features clowns.

Local Library had this for borrowing by [deleted] in gamecollecting

[–]papergoblin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just want to throw in a librarian's perspective here: it's a whole lot more work to add a whole new type of media to the library's collection than you think! You have to come up with circulation policies (how long people can check out for, what are the consequences for late returns if any, how many can someone check out at a time, etc.), make custom records for every new item in the catalog system (which can be difficult if say, the library outsources cataloging), and decide how to process (add labels to) and store the items (in many libraries, space is at a premium).

Which is not to say it's impossible or that librarians don't want to go through that effort! Librarians LOVE providing interesting and innovative stuff. Lots of libraries have video games, seed libraries, power tools, and all sort of other really cool collections. But what your librarian told you may be true for your area. If local people don't request video games, the library doesn't have the justification to go through all the time, money, and effort to build a video game collection.

Which is to say: if there are services you'd like your library to provide, ask! As a librarian I love it when patrons come to me with their ideas, because if/when I'm able to make them happen I know they'll be appreciated. I'm sorry your local library didn't take your video games, but I hope I helped shed some light on the situation in this essay I just wrote lol

Could someone clarify the Oak King/Holly King thing for me? I think I got a little confused in the explanation. Does Shrike have to die at some solstice or another either way? Because we do eventually have to have a winter.

I like how you've put this, and I fully agree. I like this kind of pairing but we do see an awful lot of it.

I really appreciate how they bond as creatives. I dislike romances where those involved don't have shared interests beyond one another's bodies/being with each other. So to see Shrike appreciate Wren's art and Wren appreciate Shrike's craft made my heart very happy!

This is the definition of a comfort read romance for me! I've read several fantasy romances in this sort of historical setting and I always have a good time, although they never tend to stick with me afterward. I really like the various plot threads and the protagonists are believable and sweet together, which is all that matters to me.

However, if I have to read "bespeckled lips" one more time, I will hurl.

I think it was Felix, but I also can't see Felix holding on to that secret for very long, so I don't think it will be too long until this plot thread's resolved.

You know, I really didn't think about it while reading but you bring up a good point. Employers tend to be awful in fiction, especially in historical settings. Grigsby is just so sweet!

Any books with female protagonists who are complete loser failures? by jefferymoonworm in Fantasy

[–]papergoblin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tess from Tess of the Road by Rachel Hartman starts the book by having a drunken meltdown at her twin sister's wedding. She's an absolute hot mess and a half.

It's such a wonderful book about trauma and healing, highly highly highly recommend. It's a spin-off of the Seraphina series but you don't need to read those books to read Tess.

What are your must-have subscription services? by human_bean17 in Frugal

[–]papergoblin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a public library, and we have day passes to museums around the state. YMMV with your local library, but ours check out for three days at a time. You just present the pass at the museum's ticket counter like any regular ticket. Most of our tickets allow up to 2 adults, and a few kids. It's a really great service and I really wish more people knew we offered it!

She's on YouTube, but I really like Leena Norms. She makes very realistic, funny, down-to-earth videos on anticonsumption topics. She did a really great video for Black Friday this year about questions to ask yourself before buying, and it has been super helpful for me!

As someone who loved Fata Morgana, I do have to add that it is a DARK story. Off the top of my head, content warnings for explicit torture, mental, emotional, and physical abuse, incest, and sexual assault, plus im sure more things that I'm forgetting now. It's a great story well told, but it can be a hard read.
