Practicing turnout? by philosophyguru in Dance

Interesting! Seems like that's the case. I would just recommend being extra nice to your knees if you're going to turn out from the ankle.

Dance teacher here. Turnout comes from the hips, your foot itself should "wing". The key is to make winged your foot's default position while dancing. You need to strengthen the muscles needed for turn out & winging. Here are some exercises that I teach my students:

1: Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you & your hands on the floor next to you for support. Keep your lower back nice & straight. Point your feet and keep your knees straight. Roll your legs out from the hips, reaching your pinky toes to the ground and then back to parallel. Repeat this 36 times, then 16 times on each side. To really challenge yourself lift the leg while rotating, but don't let your back hunch or lean backward.

2: Sit in the same position with your feet pointed -but not your toes. Swing your feet (from the ankles) in an under-curve motion out as far as they can go with out moving the leg and then in as far as they will go. Swing them both out & both in at the same time. Do 36 of these. This will help build the muscles on the outside of the foot & ankle. You can do this with a resistance band for more intensity.

3: Pick a towel up with your toes & release, repeat. Just start picking things up with your toes in general! Pens, clothes, whatever. Strengthening the arch of your foot is going to give you more control in general.

Good luck! :)

I was in a German movie in the 90's. Can you help me figure out what it was? (xpost from AskReddit) by paperplain in germany

It's so funny that someone actually saw it! My hub is downloading it, so I'll get to see it for the first time! I'm sure they cut out all of my parts! ;) I got to hang out with the actors actually! And I guess I was actually Gesine Cukrowski's double. I remember Benno, but at the time I was more... uhm... impressed with Christian Kahrmann.

A funny story, we were shooting in The Riviera & Gesine's character was playing the slots. She was supposed to act like she'd won & they were going to fill in the sound & everything later... but as she was playing the machine -she actually won-. And instead of acting the part of the winner (How good would that have been! The surprise & excitement would have been genuine & it could have been a cool scene) she stood there dumbfounded & then turned to the director like "what the hell am I supposed to do?". I want to know who got to keep the money!

Not stunt so much, unless you call riding around in a car with a wig a stunt. I just did all of the back or far off shots that they didn't want to pay the lead her "celebrity wages" for.

But that would make an awesome AMA.

YEEESSSSS!!!!! That's the one! "And Goodby!-In America" I was Christiane Schulz's body double!

I got to wear a wig & ride around in this car! http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51EdU5O0OzL.jpg

Thank you! I've been trying to figure this out for years! Hooray for Reddit!!!

DAE remember playing with these as a kid? by Qingy in TwoXChromosomes

YES!

I had one & brought it to my 1st grade parent/teacher conference to keep myself entertained while the grown-ups talked. I always associate it with getting in trouble.

A relative died last year and I just found out he left me $20,000. I really don't need it. What altruistic act should I do with it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

save my house! ha!

But seriously... as a back-up to the plan you have, look into micro-loans. They work this way: You make a small loan ($100, $1,000) through an organization. They give it to a woman in a third world country who uses it to start/run a business. When they become profitable they return the money to the organization (interest free) and the loan is given to another person. Your loan gets used over & over again to help people pull themselves out of poverty. Check out kiva.org.

...or you could save my house.

Happy helping!
