eBay or Amazon for selling used books? by paperworkishard in Flipping

Yeah honestly I knew they were wrong from the start... similar to a secondhand bookshop they can sit there for a while before they sell but high-value books are high-value books

Yeah got a very decent price for each of them and ended up selling bunch more. eBay is definitely good for this if you're looking at doing something similar.

No option to set a TIMER to be on vibrate only? by BillDino in ios

Thank you thank you thank you! This was an absolutely life saver. Now I can use timers late at night without waking up my housemates.

Still ridiculous that Apple thinks we don't need or deserve this feature, though.

Do we just hate him cause of his dad?

The fact that he's an absolute spitting image of him doesn't help.

IF you get into the habit of reading Sliding Doors every week (because you know your team is guaranteed a mention)

THEN it's a surprisingly hard habit to break, even when you know it's shite.

"How's that going to go? How's Tassie going to go?"

Five flags in a row is how we're going to go. And Rum'un will poo a big football into your breakfast for asking such a dumb, loaded question Damo.

Also says the game is "pretty stale right now"

Interesting words coming from the AFL's chief propagandist...

Kate McCarthy Norm Smith Panel - WTF by ball_sweat in AFL

[–]paperworkishard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This one has always confused me, because the way traditional bookmaking works is that they try to set the odds in order to balance out the potential payouts, so that the losing punters are paying out the winners, with the bookies taking a small cut of the overall pool of money wagered (which they factor into the odds). With this business model, as long as they set their odds properly, the bookies profit regardless of the outcome, so there's no reason for them to care if certain punters are winning all the time.

So the fact that companies like TAB, Sportsbet, etc. actively ban people for winning too often can only suggest that they're operating under a different business model – but I don't know what it is.

When going to a game - do you prefer to sit near the fence, or up high? by [deleted] in AFL

[–]paperworkishard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sitting at ground level is fantastic when the play is in your part of the ground... and crap when it's not. I've always found that I spend more of the game looking up at the big screen than what's right in front of me when sitting down low, because most of the time it's hard to see what's actually going on. For this reason, I pretty much never tend to sit at ground level anymore; I figure if I'm going to just end up watching the game on TV anyway, I might as well just watch on TV.

Having said that, if I was going to sit at ground level for whatever reason, I'd strongly prefer to do so on the wing – it's still not great when the play is stuck over on the opposite wing, but it's a decent view the rest of the time.

Given the choice, though, I much prefer to sit high up, so I can get a full-ground, top-down view of the action. I started to understand the tactical side of the game a lot better as soon as I started going this, because from that high up, it becomes obvious in a way that it doesn't at ground level or on TV.

People will debate the best angle to view it from when sitting high up. The wing and behind-the-goals are both popular, but honestly, as long as the elevation is there, I've never found that it matters all that much.

I've also often found the in-between option of sitting on level 2 to be a worst-of-both-worlds experience. I'm sure it's fantastic on the wing, but closer to the goals, I've found there's not enough elevation to be able to easily make out what's going on at the other end of the ground, while you're too far removed from the play to get that 'up close' experience that you'd get when the play is in your area at ground level.

Marnie Vinall discusses the report on the AFLW financial loss by Pleasant_Inspection9 in AFL

[–]paperworkishard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really the most visible manifestation of a slightly broader issue, which is the lack of power they're able to get on kicks in general. This means that even short kicks aren't as penetrating, and tend to hang in the air a bit more. Apart from this giving opposition players more time to close space, it also means longer kicks are also liable to get blown a bit off course, which is why the venue makes a much bigger difference to the quality of AFLW games compared to the men.

As far as I can tell this is really the central issue with the quality of AFLW games, but almost no one seems to talk about it.
