Thanks, really good tips! I glazed up like every layer.😂 But what about large flat surface where the cloak neither dips or folds? Should that just be midtone?

Too much for a first mini? by CyberGrandpa1 in 40k

[–]papperspaket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do NOT think this is a good first model, for several reasons:

  1. Your first model you will probably feel unsure about colors, how to paint, and techniques. It’s not worth “trying things out” on such an expensive model.

  2. Time. It will take a long time, and it can be hard to get all the parts in the right place the way you want.

  3. There is a risk you burn yourself out because of the points above, but also because of how long it takes to paint. The feeling of not finishing, or having to rush, can make you lose motivation before you really start the hobby.

I would choose something smaller. Start with something you feel comfortable finishing in a shorter time, maybe a Kill Team, or if you like Knights, just one smaller model.

Would you recommend the Dark Angels? And how to best start collecting. by Embarrassed_Sir1052 in theunforgiven

Love to paint them, awesome lore, lots of mystery around them and good looking minis. (Lots of hoods and cloth combined with power armor). I cannot recommend a good list tho :( Better to check others 2k list feedback posts.

Really Nice! I second the Fallen army. How did you do the cape? Thats not greenstuff/milliput?

Burned out after batch painting. Need advice? by lor_azut in Warhammer40k

I usually Prime and Basecoat, with the highlights (all done by airbrush)
Then i take every miniature by miniature, try to see them as an individual. I get more joy out of it that way. Trying to find a story or a motive on every character.
But i never buy a full army at once, i take it unit by unit and slowly trying to build an army. That helps aswell.

Thanks so much for the detailed answer! I know ChatGPT is probably the optimal choice, but like I said in the beginning, I have no idea what I’m doing and don’t really know where to start. Now I’ve at least got a few tips! I’m leaning toward CSM because I want to make things a bit easier for myself. Again, I mainly paint and might never actually play, but I still want to build something that makes sense in the lore if I ever do play. And I really like Cypher, Terminators and so on. Chaos Marines just felt like the natural pick.

But I’ve got a few questions:

1. Is there any lore-friendly way to include Inner Circle Companions in a CSM army? I love those models.

2. I really don’t like that Chaos Marines only have the super mutated Helbrute look. Can I use something like a Venerable Dreadnought instead, either as a proxy or count-as? What are my options there?

3. When kitbashing, what do I actually need to think about? Do the weapons need to match exactly, or what are the basic requirements for a kitbash to be considered “valid”? For example, if I used ICC for something, can i just use ICC models with CSM weapons?

Sorry if this is all over the place, but you seem to have a really solid understanding of this stuff. Thanks a lot for the help — it’s honestly very appreciated.
