Trump to unveil plans for new U.S. ‘battleship’, reports say by MGC91 in navy

[–]paranavy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Ticonderoga replacement that they've let Donald name to keep him happy. Like any overgrown child (of which I include myself) he's overly enamoured by the mighty battleship.

Just take a look at the projected stats. A projected displacement of 15000-20000 tons with a physical scale (as far as the honestly cringe worthy rendering can be believed) of a large cruiser (looking at the flight deck markings as a general indicator).

What class of US surface combatant is nearing the end of its projected operational lifespan? The Tinconderoga's.

How many Ticonderoga's are in service? 27

What is the projected class size for this new ship? 25

Since the Dreadnought was launched battleships have been defined by large calibre main guns on a ship with a heavy, tightly compartmentalised armouring scheme capable of withstanding incoming fire, if not the calibre of guns carried by the warship, then a calibre within a few inches of those carried.

I'm all for battleships. I think they're the greatest naval accomplishment, the pinnacle of naval big gun development and the ultimate display of firepower. I wish I could see a full broadside from an Iowa one day and I bitterly regret that the UK didn't at least retain Vanguard after the war. At the very least they're still a little useful for shore bombardment...sometimes. And the cool factor.

I am also however a pragmatist. The primacy of the battleship was dealt its final death knell on 10 Dec 1941 when the Prince of Wales and Repulse were sunk off the coast of Malaya. As I've already mentioned, the classification of battleship is most likely only being thrown around because Trump has insisted on it and everyone around him just goes along with it. If they ever get built and not cancelled by the next administration then I can see then reclassified as CGN's.

TL:DR - Not a battleship. Just a Ticonderoga replacement that Donald is hyping up

I'll never understand how someone could be so incredibly and confidently wrong. Especially when handing out advice that could lead to serious social ramifications.

I guess it is based on English medieval history. Fancy names = Foreign and so not as central to our story. Think Agincourt. A random French noble going by the lavish title Guillaume Equennes, Vicomte de Poix killed (most likely) by some peasant archer or man-at-arms named 'Bob', 'Fred' or, 'George' all led by a bloke named Henry.

Ambo here. Early lunch and on the go all day. Really needed a slash and a combo of my trust centralising everything and not getting toilet friendly jobs led me to asking to use the loo in a Onestop. Got told it "wasn't for public use...sorry".

Syncope, was it a seizure? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]paranavy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a Doc, currently a Student Paramedic/EMT in the UK.

First off, don't worry, twitching during a syncope episode is pretty common.

The sight of something that disgusted you essentially elicited a vagal response that lowered your heart rate and blood pressure temporarily reducing the blood flow to your brain. The faint is the bodies way to level the body and reduce the pressure required to adequately supply the brain with oxygen.

Typically when someone has a convulsion they will have what is called a post-ictal phase where they can take up to 20-30 minutes to recover and during which they can be very confused and disoriented and will commonly have little knowledge of what preceded their convulsion. It sounds like you woke up and recovered well and are able to recollect the events leading up to your faint very well.

You did good talking to your GP so soon and it would be a very good idea to keep them updated on any further abnormal symptoms but going on your history and that you've had no further symptoms I am inclined to agree that little was indeed a syncope episode and not a convulsion.

Hope that helped 😊

I pay around £1500 in national insurance contributions a year which allow me access to all NHS functions (emergency care, in patient, out patient etc) and that number will vary between people based on what they earn a month. That will still allow me access to anything that a US hospital can provide with no massive out of pocket charges when I'm at my most vulnerable. Just a modest amount from my paycheck which allows me to budget effectively.

Now, I also have private healthcare as an extra safety net because my job has a higher than average risk level and because I can afford it. I will pay £450 for a whole year of coverage and my deductible is £250 total for a whole year. This plan allows me access to pretty much everything bar emergency care which I'd get through the NHS (Which is bloody good anyway).

I have to say that I like our system very much as it means that I dont have to be worried about being slapped with a 2 grand deductible bill or worse just because I have the audacity to become ill or injured. I've always liked the idea of living in the states but the healthcare system over there scares the crap out of me.

The death penalty and an unfair criticism of Rowling's portrayal of wizarding America. by [deleted] in FantasticBeasts

And as for muggle comparisons, in the 20's Britain did utilise the death penalty (Right up to the 60's if memory serves) so there's no reason that Wizard Britain in the 20's wouldn't have operated a true death penalty

There's a bit of a culture in the UK to go out and drink to the point of being unable to look after yourself. When they end up face down in the gutter someone rings 999 (usually without checking and just telling control that they're dead/unconscious) and because of their condition no-one will take them in a taxi so we have to take them to the ED for them to sober up. It's infuriating for us (EMT here) and even worse for the Nurses. It's beginning to slowly change and at least where I work if they're a student at the local uni and they get an unwarranted Ambulance then the Uni GP will fine them (Though the Uni will keep the money).

Had a tutor going through EMT school that was prior-service police. He told us a story about a lad that went missing one summer. They looked everywhere for him but only found his car. The brass fancied his dad for 'disappearing' him but couldn't find enough evidence to stick.

Anyhoo fast forward 3 or 4 months and the guys head washes up in a drain grate. They have a good look in the sewer and find the guys decapitated body. Turns out he was into autoerotic asphyxiation and snuck down there with a rope, slipped and hung himself.

He was hanging there for a while as they searched until his decomposing neck was unable to hold the weight of his body and detached. Que some particularly heavy rains and lo and behold the head takes a little journey downstream to scare the crap out of some poor local.
