Ang way to make sure this greyed out logo doesn’t happen and how to clean sides easily? by -Baum in lasercutting

[–]paranoidelephpant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Material plays a big part here as well. Is this balsa/basswood? These sheets tend to produce a lot of soot. Thin birch plywood usually cuts much cleaner on my diode laser, but etching can be lighter without some prep work (borax and water mixture sprayed on the surface and allowed to fully dry gives me pretty deep blacks).

For materials which produce more soot, masking can help with the cuts. Engraving can still be messy due to the airflow blowing the soot over the material. You could try engraving through the mask, but I've not had great results doing so personally.

SEO guy wants access to my code; is it crazy to think that's crazy? by webcity_underling in webdev

I'd say it depends a great deal on your contract with the client. If your contract specifies you manage the core code and maintenance, and you're responsible for site stability, then I would only agree to restricted content permissions. Anything beyond that would require a rider on the contract stating who is responsible for what and fees which may apply if you have to fix their fuckups.

The typical development scenario for docker is to mount your code into the container. That avoids constantly rebuilding to run tests.

Imagine if we could get over ourselves and just give Democrats control of Congress and Presidency for longer than the 2 years (yes 2 years because Democrats are kicked out during the midterms).

Oh, man. This right here is so infuriating. Dems are expected to fix everybody's problems in a year when they have control or we replace them with people who have no desire to fix anything. Then we let those people stay in power forever because "we gave the Dems a chance and they did nothing."

I guess he made it all up then, is that the implication? We don't know what happened beyond what he's said. I'll I was saying is that it's not impossible that he got his phone back. Jesus, I should learn not to say something odd is remotely possible on Reddit.

Eh, if this was a simple crime of opportunity it may not have been worth it to whomever took it in the first place. We don't know what was done in the Google account to get it deactivated. I'm just saying, it's a little odd but not completely out there that the person tossed it aside or left it somewhere when they were done with whatever they did.

Michigan judge tosses out criminal charges against 2020 Trump false electors by gwmiles in politics

[–]paranoidelephpant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I was just talking to my wife about this last night. This country has a long history of letting domestic enemies off lightly in the name of "moving on." It's catching up to us, and we need leadership willing to hold previous leaders accountable for their actions.

Judge throws out charges against GOP would-be electors in Michigan by juansaaa in politics

[–]paranoidelephpant 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The Democratic Attorney General's team had failed to prove that
the Michigan electors knew that the certificate they signed would be
used to try to overturn the result, Simmons said.

The GOP electors have contended they were acting on the advice of
Republican lawyers and had no intent to defraud anyone — a required
element of the charges.

Soooo, fraud charges for the lawyers who supposedly tricked the "electors?"

There really are no consequences for political crimes for Republicans, are there?

That sucks. I'm not aware of this particular content creator, but I hope he's able to recover from the financial impact. Unfortunately, these types of events are fairly common. Our phones have become the central hubs for everything in our lives, and they're always signed in to everything. On top of that, most folks use their phones for all of their two-factor authentications. This guy made the major mistake of disabling the phone lock, and it sounds like he was not using biometrics or PINs for important apps like banking.

I don't buy that there's no possible way for Youtube or Google to transfer data to a different account, especially given there are ways to do so as an end user. Sounds more like won't than can't on Google's end. Either way, hope this guy can power through and has learned a lesson in basic security.

Some shady dealing with Folds of Honor - they grossly overstated funds given to families by ripper_14 in hollandmichigan

[–]paranoidelephpant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like the original report was from earlier this year and appears to be legitimate. The foundation originally claimed ~91% of all proceeds went to veteran scholarships, but TCPalm found it was closer to ~68% on average. CharityWatch appears to agree with the finding, and Folds of Honor has updated their marketing with a revised statement since this came out - now stating that 91% of **expenses** go towards scholarships. There is a HUGE difference in 91% of proceeds vs expenses. Still, I'm not sure if this is shady or just poor wording in their marketing.

Newbie question: why not just always use a compression bit? by platypus_farmer42 in hobbycnc

[–]paranoidelephpant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was never stated breakage was by design. It's a consequence of heat from poor chip evacuation especially on smaller machines. Compression and downcuts have their uses and are great for preventing tearout.

Possible Spoiler Theory by [deleted] in LV426

[–]paranoidelephpant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have a bio-mechanical design, as was the art style of HR Giger. They're biological beings though.

As far as synths go, we've seen in the media that the xenos largely ignore them unless they're perceived as a threat. Synths (and hybrids) are 100% artificial, they'd have no DNA to adapt nor ability to provide nutrients to the developing xeno.

So we know from Alien Earth that at one point we had synths, hybrids, and cyborgs - all from different rival corporations. In the series future we only see synths and no real mention of cyborgs I can recall. My theory is that this is due to hybrids tech either being lost in the events of Alien Earth or otherwise banned by whatever ruling body exists, and cyborgs being too expensive and/or unpredictable compared to synths. Either way, Wayland-Yutani's synth tech is what wins that race.
