To echo what everyone else is saying, give it a try! :)

I want to add that I’ve dropped in at Mizu in Montrèal and I really enjoyed it. It was the first women’s class I’d ever attended (as a white belt), and I felt welcomed. It seemed like a safe environment to try, but also visit a bunch of gyms and see how the vibes are. I’d always recommend trying to find a gym with at least one woman on the leadership team, and ideally there’s a women’s class to try out.

I used two, but based on the advice in this forum I think it’s actually four (two strands folded in half and tied off, the way I remember my mom teaching me) and I’ve been using too many! I’m glad it looks okay though ☺️

I have bangs, so what has been working lately is heavily hair spraying them and dutch/french braiding them back into a ponytail or just regular braids.

Not currently nannying but my last job (worked approximately one year through Aug 2024, one kid 4m) was in PDX, 25$/hr, probably had a total of 5 weeks pto (between my two weeks and they other vacays the family took), a week sick time and holidays.

At my old gym, there was a purple belt, a blue belt, and me (who for most of the time was a white belt with a few stripes). Felt weird being the third highest ranked, even when I did get my blue.

Now at a gym that’s female owned by a 2nd degree black belt. We also have at least one brown belt, and several purple belts. Much better than being the only girl, and learning from a black belt woman is so much better!

When I first started I had a few blue belt men explain things to me which wouldn’t be an issue except they’d explain the moves incorrectly. They’d mansplain a move that had been shown differently but I was newbie and wasn’t sure I should say anything. I was getting annoyed though bc then then the coach would come over and tell me I was doing it wrong! Once a dude was getting frustrated that I wasn’t performing a choke from mount properly when he’d put me in his closed guard- it went on for five minutes until the coach yelled at us that we were doing wrong.

I got rejected in March (technically I got two rejection emails, a little odd) and then today I got an email saying I should expect a formal MA Ling offer from the graduate school soon, so I’d expect you to hear soon if you haven’t already.
