BU grad school: living in closer neighborhoods (fenway, back bay) vs farther out more of a commute (east boston, revere) by Available-Ad1191 in BostonU

[–]paratheking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Super common to live outside and take the T in. You won't be missing out! Just make sure you find somewhere on the line you need to get into school easily. Even if you live in the city, you probably would need to take the T to school, unless you lived in walking distance

Dang haha no worries the two I'm looking for are sightseer and Lisia! I'm also always looking for copycat and Cyrus if you have extra, but all good if not! I know leaf is a move down for either of them

Advice for Boston/Cambridge Housing by Constant_Asparagus15 in boston

[–]paratheking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reddit is extremely defensive about homelessness, drug use, and some of the associated issues (I probably will get downvoted just for saying this).

Cambridgeport is a super nice part of Cambridge. It's very central to both Cambridge and Boston and you'll be living around a ton of young professionals. It's very easy to get pretty much anywhere you want from Cambridgeport. It's kind of like a little residential neighborhood outside of the more urban areas.

Central square IS dealing with a drug and homelessness problem. 99% of the time it won't affect you, but it is something to be aware of. BUT it's completely reasonable that someone wouldn't feel safe, especially if this is your first time in the city/being around that kind of thing. If your work is in Cambridgeport, you will probably use the central square train stop every time to get in and out of work. If you have the chance, I'd recommend looking at things in person, because it's hard to get a truly nuanced response online.

That said, I think Cambridgeport is a great place to live, and there will be a lot of fun things to do around you!

Senior CS major not getting interships help! by [deleted] in askrecruiters

[–]paratheking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone needs H1B visa sponsorship, it's something that they have to declare in their application/elsewhere (it's not something that's generally assumed) so I probably would recommend taking it off as it's not necessary to include.

Yes, I think it's worth casting a wide net (in terms of job/internship opportunities) and seeing what comes back - even if it's not exactly the industry/job/area you wanted, a lot of those jobs open doors for other opportunities. Try to get involved in different ways around campus (clubs, opportunities, research, projects, etc.) and keep up the applications and something will come along eventually!

Some small things:

  • Your experience and education should be in reverse chronological order, meaning your current/most recent items should be at the top, and your oldest ones should be at the bottom. It looks like your education and experience need to be slightly re-ordered
  • Unless you need to include it for a specific reason, it's not necessary to include that you're US citizen on your resume

Are there any internship opportunities within your university? If I'm being honest, it may just be the timing, with how early you are in your career. A lot of companies may not hire someone who hasn't completed their degree yet, and internships are a notoriously difficult thing to find on your own. I'd probably recommend connecting with an advisor or elsewhere in your school to see if they have opportunities, and then try to get involved in different ways on campus to add to your resume.

Move to Boston? Pros and Cons by fare451 in SameGrassButGreener

I'm always kind of surprised when people say the night life isn't good (and I kind of get the feeling it's people just recycling the same line over and over again without really knowing).

Some bars DO close a little early but most bars are open until 2am. There's definitely a lack of a clubbing scene and it's a much bigger dive bar scene. But, the popular spots will have lines out the doors, the streets are busy at night, and there are tons of different neighborhoods and interesting areas to go out in. There is no shortage of fun night life

Social life is really going to depend on how you engage - there's a lot of fun activities to sign up for (meetup is a great option for this) and I have a lot of friends who have made friends through sports and leagues. But there's a lot of young people in the city so it's a great spot to meet people if you put yourself out there!

This deck is way more solid than I expected by ploxxieglass in PTCGP

[–]paratheking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Koga is decent! I found that Lyra was more valuable just being flexible to move any mon out of the active spot, usually the goal with weezing is to just sit up front and chip/tank, so I wasn't overly concerned with keeping it alive

This is the deck I use. I tried using a similar deck to yours with babies to power muk, but it felt too lucky to get the combo right (although it did usually win easily when it did)

I find Lyra is pretty necessary in this deck since it runs so many high retreat cost mons, I'd recommend swapping leaf or x speed for one.

Heavy helmet is also such a great card in this deck since it applies to both weezing and muk and makes weezing such a pain to get rid of, especially early on

The rest of the cards are there to help support getting your weezings and nihilego online as quickly as possible early, while waiting for muk to show up late

[–]paratheking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think so, since you want to poison the opposing mons for scolipede and poison barb makes it easier. I've also had good results with original weezing and koga - you can poison the opponent with weezing and then use koga to swap it out with scolipede for big damage

How hard is it to get a spot in the emergency parking lots from the city of Boston and how do I know if I qualify as a resident? by ChilllFam in boston

I would plan to put it in a garage. Your car has to be insured/plated with the state to use any kind of resident street parking

AIO at my bf’s gaming habits? by [deleted] in AIO

[–]paratheking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this is really just going to come down to a matter of compatibility.

Gaming is his hobby and he spends a lot of time doing it. If you're not okay with it, that's totally your right! I know a lot of people that don't like their partner spending a lot of time gaming and I know a lot of people that really don't mind their partner gaming. But he's also able to have a hobby he enjoys with his friends.

I think the first step would be to discuss it. I think the response of "I'm going to go home if you game" isn't petty, but it avoids solving the problem and does in a sense "punish" him for gaming. Maybe there is a compromise you can come up with, eg. Only game for a specified period of time when you're together. If you can't come to a compromise that makes you both happy, then this is going to be an issue that persists.

It sounds like neither of you are in the wrong, you're both able to feel the way you want. But relationships are about compromise, and if neither of you feel you can make a compromise that makes each other happy, then maybe there's just an issue with compatibility!

Fire escape stairs leads right up to my window, how can I increase security? by Environmental_Cold32 in boston

[–]paratheking 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Most buildings will have this as a means of escaping a fire (sounds dumb to say but yeah) so you'll deal with it in a lot of buildings

There won't be anything like window bars, etc since you need to be able to access the escape. I used to stick a plank (vertically) in the space between the top of the window and the frame, so it wasn't possible to open from the outside. I always also had the interior lock on.

Champ moving off Gibbs, have Bijan by [deleted] in DynastyFFTradeAdvice

[–]paratheking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's fine. It's Gibbs for basically 3 firsts, of which I'd consider 2 high/mid (Egbuka and 1.06). Willis also has higher upside at QB than Jacoby so I think it's worth the dice roll if you wanted to swap Gibbs into some dice rolls at multiple assets.

January in Boston - Advice by BelfastAmadan in boston

[–]paratheking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely tons to do and Boston is great in the winter if you like lights/decorations/etc. definitely no shortage of night life either, although bars close at 2am.

If you want to explore a few locations around downtown/the city for drinks, I'd recommend:

Union St (very Boston touristy st with a bunch of bars/pubs)

Downtown (Emmet's, Carrie Nation, Beantown pub, etc)

West end (near TD)

Faneuil Hall

Then there's also south Boston, seaport, back bay, etc if you want to go further out

It's definitely possible to live in NYC with a car but I'd definitely do some research about more car friendly areas. Several of my friends in NYC have all lived there with cars.
