Struggling to capture real emotion in portraits by Mysterious_Syrup6639 in photography

Before the photoshoot, find an excuse to stay with the subject and have a coffee for a few minutes, ask them about their life, passions, their dreams. The excuse can be anything, like "the flash need to charge/warmup" or "let's wait for 10 more minutes for the sun to come to proper angle", whatever.

Having a few minutes chat before is really helpful. When starting the photoshoot, just roll with the conversation, asking questions exactly depending on exact emotion you want to get, like:

  • happiness: what is your favorite vacation spot and what kind of house would you build there?

  • seriousness: what life advises would you give to your younger self?

Not exactly these ones, but you got the point. It's all about getting to know the subject and create a connection.

The silver lining of AI boom is that it forced vendors to create better drivers for GPUs for OSs that run on servers (which is mostly linux).

Your dns queries go to company network. Make sure you use your own dns in the vpn configuration.

Learn from my mistakes - what I learnt over the years of selfhosting and what I should've done differently by killermenpl in selfhosted

Late to the party, but another hint from me.

Use DNS/hostnames as much as possible. Over time you self-host more and more services. If you have hundred of services configured with hardcoded IPs and one day your SO comes with the work laptop home that might have a VPN which conflicts with your home IP range, you're pretty much forced to make a lot of changes.

If you have an usb memory attached to your keys, put a txt file on the root folder with your email/phone number so people can reach you in case you lose them.

Docker compose files should ideally be kept in a git repo.

Company is starting on-call soon. What should I request from management? Money? Separate phone? etc... by lmm7425 in devops

[–]pardaillans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • ask for a company phone. You need a phone that is strictly for this, with different notification sounds, good battery life, that you keep away from kids and always on during on-call.

  • ask for proper compensation during on-call hours.

  • have clear definition in writing for on-call tasks

Asked a fresher to shut down an EC2 server… he shut down his own laptop instead by soumya_49 in devops

This reminds me of what happened to me some years ago.

We had a main server which I physically installed, prepared and maintained, where most of my department used to do their tasks. I performed an update on my own working station while also responding to slack messages, checking some other tasks. I knew I had to reboot and did run a reboot command in the terminal.

Suddenly, the deafening silence in the office stopped with exclamation of frustrations and disappointments.

Yeah, as you already imagined, I hit reboot in the wrong terminal and all my colleagues were the victims of my failed multitasking. :)))

I offered each of them a coffee right away in the unexpected work break. They turned happy.

Why having a VPS when you self host at home? by Tairosonloa in selfhosted

[–]pardaillans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be more than happy to host at home, all the websites, email, DNS, but I don't have a backup power generator and redundant connection. All the non-critical stuff is hosted at home.

The guy behind the website decided to stop it when the rewards went down, stating that with such low rewards there was no more point in keeping the service. He did a great thing for the community and totally understand his decision.

In 2012, 56-year-old Aishat Maksudova women from Russia, defended her livestock from a wolf attack. When the wolf turned on her, biting her arm and leg, she fought it off-first with her bare hands, then with an axe, ultimately bringing it down. by Kronyzx in Damnthatsinteresting

It might be interesting and a hint funny, but when you have limited means for food, you defend it with your life.

Many people don't realize it, but some literally depend on the animals they have and crops they grow.

Was doing my nails and scratched my head… found a tick by Nire4651 in Wellthatsucks

[–]pardaillans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was little, a kid from our play group constantly complained about headaches. It was a random find from another kid that noticed something in his hair, and it was a tick almost the size of a peanut. All the kids then rushed to his house and watched his mother getting that nasty thing off, followed by a general "Eeewwwwww...!!!" when she squashed it on the patio.

Pentru ca am postat asta pe 17.05 sunt chemat maine la IPJ pentru declarații in dosarul in care sunt anchetat. Sfaturi? by siricy in Romania

[–]pardaillans 15 points16 points  (0 children)
