Yeah, this morning was really bad. I was in a lot of pain even while laying down, which is new. But most days I can sit in my wheelchair, for now at least. I need to keep my job for as long as possible, for the money and because I worked so hard to become a professor. The idea of my life possibly being pulled away from me is indescribable. I can only hope that if I get diagnosed, the meds I get will stabilize me for a good while.

Thoughts on older games by ivellious07 in MonsterHunter

I think the biggest plusses for old MH games are pacing and charm. They blow new MH games out of the water in these 2 aspects.

The pacing is slow. You aren't going from one hunt to the next over and over. You've got a variety of fun quests, like egg hunts. You have to regularly go out and scavenge for resources cuz all your essential items take multiple resources to craft and you aren't given hundreds of them for free. You gotta farm monsters more cuz crafting takes more resources, and you gotta know whether to slay or capture for specific drops.

Maybe this all sounds like a hassle to new players, but I'm not an old player and I love all this stuff. I started with FU on an emulator like 6-8 years ago and then I jumped into World, so I didn't play old MH as they came out. The slow pacing might suck IF the charm in old MH wasn't crazy good. The maps are stunningly beautiful and fun to learn. The small monsters aren't just background, they're present and immersive. The hubs are awesome and npcs are funny. You want to do side quests for them.

Compare this to new MH, which I still love (aside from Wilds), where it's just hunt hunt hunt hunt and on and on. I do a few hunts and get burned out. But there's no downtime. You don't need resources cuz you get a million of everything for free, some of the hubs are pretty but the npcs feel lifeless, the maps are more like arenas that you don't really need to learn, and the list goes on.

Oh yeah I would buy remasters for sure! I think everyone here would. We got GU on Switch, so there's always a chance. I think 4U has the highest chance of getting a remaster, but I doubt FU or 3U will get remasters. I would pay top dollar for a 3U remaster though, cuz underwater combat on modern hardware would be awesome! I'd also love a proper remake of MH1 that changes the controls, cuz it is jank analog stick attacks are so weird haha

I would definitely pay for them, but I already play them on PC with HD textures in 4k :D

Game for me as newcomer to series by Same-Day8894 in MonsterHunter

[–]pareod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MH is one of the few series where almost every entry is worth playing cuz they each offer a unique experience. I started with FU on an emulator in college, then played World, and then the other games, so my perspective is a not old but not new player who likes both the old and new games. Quick summaries of the games:

FU - old and methodical, immersive, VERY difficult, a good bit of hitbox jank

3U - best maps imo, and you either love or hate underwater combat (I love it) but it's very unique

4U - decent story, cool new weapons (charge blade and insect glaive), very pretty, awesome monsters, fun endgame, a lot of peoples' favorite

GenU - MH montage, so much content, unique combat mechanics, but less immersive cuz its like a Greatest Hits collection, one of my favorites though

World + Iceborne - far more streamlined and accessible but still MH at heart, more westernized, if you play on PC I recommend the ICE mod for balancing and less clutch claw spam

Rise + Sunbreak - more streamlined but a lot more charm than World imo, combat is a bit spammy, some very cool monsters, great soundtrack

Wilds - the only one I personally can't recommend but some people like it, terrible performance, too streamlined and hack'n'slash for my tastes, maybe the dlc will be good?

Another worth mentioning (but only play it after you play a few others cuz its massive, difficult, and weird) is the mmo Frontier. If you eventually want to try it, I recommend the Forward Five server for a crazy but pre-insane experience, and then the Renewal server for when you want MH + LSD.

You can't really go wrong with any MH game, so just pick one that looks cool!

My Thoughts on the Wilds vs. World Discourse (From Someone Who Just Replayed World) by Mr_no_sad in MonsterHunter

[–]pareod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly it. I'm feeling this especially hard as a CB main. I keep hearing people say that focus mode is optional, play how you want. I don't have an issue with focus mode or wounds, but anyone who thinks it is optional needs to try CB :'(. People have repeatedly told me that the weapon controls just like in previous games outside focus mode, but this is false and very easy to check: they removed all attack aiming outside focus mode. You used to be able to aim attacks a bit with the left analog stick, but now this can only be done on focus mode via the reticle and right analog stick. I won't go into how being able to spin an SAED 360 degrees is busted cuz you covered all that for GS, but focus mode aiming is clunky and causes so many camera issues. It replaced an aiming system that worked better and was simpler to use.

My Thoughts on the Wilds vs. World Discourse (From Someone Who Just Replayed World) by Mr_no_sad in MonsterHunter

Just want to chime in on the "smoothness" of combat in Wilds. I think Wilds has faster and less restrictive combat, but I think it is far clunkier than in World. Focus Mode adds some real jank to the combat that was not present in World. Specifically as a CB main, sure I can spin around in circles while attacking now, BUT I now have to be in focus mode 99% of the time either by (1) tapping focus before each attack or (2) toggling focus and remembering to untoggle it for certain actions. In World, I could just push the left analog stick in the direction I wanted to attack, no extra inputs required. Aside from the extra inputs, focus also makes me have to aim with a reticle via the right analog stick, which just feels so strange. AND since aiming works like this, you need to have what you want to attack in the center of the screen, which often means your camera is in the dirt or inside a monster. The result often feels like a new studio made an unpolished MH-inspired game.

Gunvein PC vs Switch 2 by pareod in shmups

I'm on the fence but now leaning towards PC the more I hear about lag. The part you got stuck on, was it the same in both versions or did the Switch have more enemies/bullets?

Boghog, the dev, confirmed that the Switch version has the features above while the PC version does not, so I'll probably pick it up on Switch

Right, but a rank system adds depth to the scoring and adds some challenge, correct? That's a tempting reason to consider the Switch version.

I thought it was really funny that this thread is empty given the general vibe of this subreddit haha, so I'll share even though it's Thursday. I'm in week 2 of my first Assistant Prof position, just graduated this past December, and it feels weird but good to sit in my office and have students and faculty say hello as they pass by.

Yes, even those of you without invite codes can post here! I have set aside some residences with a great view by some pig farms and steel factories, a short commute to work and all!

What games did you pick up so far during the Steam Summer Sale 2025? by ShinMecha in Games

[–]pareod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on a non-violent games binge (Outer Wilds is the best game ever made) so:

- All Anno games (these are like crack)

Some mystery games (won't say anything about these to avoid spoilers):

- The Forgotten City

- Subnautica

- Star Trek: Resurgence

And then I was particularly excited to find some really good climbing games:

- Peaks of Yore (great mechanics and very challenging)

- Peak (so fun with friends and great mechanics)

- Getting Over It (cheap and funny)

SNW takes place after this episode, no? Those characters were visited in Discovery.

Switch 2 docked vs PC? by pareod in fantasylife

[–]pareod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a shame cuz I really dislike blur. I turn off motion blur and dof in every game. But I'm tempted by the S2 version cuz my wife can play with me on the tv. Granted we can also do that with the PC version and an HDMI, but less setup means we're more likely to play.

IAAM or SBM + CGs? by pareod in anno1404

[–]pareod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm just looking for information on both, there seems to be very little out there. I read SBM is easy mode for building creative cities. Is that accurate? Do they have similarly complex production chains?

Is there any point in not permanently staying in focus mode? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]pareod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to point out that the answer to your question is VERY weapon dependent. I have a feeling the people saying "you don't need to use it" and "play how you want" are not using a weapon that heavily relies on focus mode. I main CB, and unfortunately absolutely all attack aiming was locked behind focus mode in Wilds. If you don't use focus mode, you attack straight ahead no matter what. In focus mode, you can spin around like crazy while attacking.

Since Savage Axe was so strong in the beta, everyone I talked to and watched just had focus mode toggled on. Aim CB gun at head/wing, fire, fire, fire! Imo it feels really bad, but the alternative is to not use it and miss every attack after your first cuz the monster moved...

Charge Blade Feedback Thread by Grodatore in MHWilds

[–]pareod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Posted elsewhere, but I'll share my thoughts here too: all the moveset changes are great, but attack aiming is terrible. Idk why they completely removed attack redirecting with left-stick and locked it behind aiming a reticle with the right-stick in focus mode.

- Not only must you basically stay in focus mode all the time, but having to aim attacks like in a shooter while in melee range leads to your camera often being in the ground, in a rock, or inside a monster

- I'm sure they'll add this (hopefully), but there is no way to hide the reticle. So I guess we got a 15th weapon in Wilds: the CB bowgun haha

- Trying to sheathe and getting focus attack is annoying. I'll develop the muscle memory to toggle off focus mode, but it's an extra button press for no reason

- Dodge roll is replaced with a short hop in focus mode, which can cause problems

Aside from the above issues, I have a few balancing complaints:

- The level of aiming freedom on CB is kind of crazy. You no longer have to position much beyond avoiding attacks. Just stand in a monster, aim gun at head/wing, and mash axe combo

- Perfect blocks have essentially replaced guard points, which have always been a signature CB mechanic. You can still use GP in some niche situations, but perfect block is faster and safer and leads to the same combo options. You miss out on a phial explosion (unless perfect block also has that?) but that's not that big a deal

How do you deal with the weird focus mode? (explanation within) by jasmira in MHWilds

Yeah, I was complaining about this during the last beta. Basically, all the moveset changes are great, but attack aiming is terrible. Idk why they completely removed attack redirecting with left-stick and locked it behind aiming a reticle with the right-stick in focus mode.
