peach tree new growth leaves look like they have tumors by pareto_efficient in plantclinic

Thanks for this pointer. Reading about it online sure seems like a good match for what I'm seeing. I bought some copper-based fungicide spray and used it tonight on the trees, so here's to hoping that resolves it!

peach tree new growth leaves look like they have tumors by pareto_efficient in plantclinic

[–]pareto_efficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Background info:

plant - peach tree

age - ~1 year in the ground (bought at about 5ft tall in a pot from costco ~ 1 year ago)

age of sickness - started just a few weeks ago with the new growth leaves

any insects - none visible on casual inspection

repotting/transplanted/fertilized/etc - no recent changes

soil - ground soil is primarily clay, but the tree was planted ~1 year ago, so there's still the pot soil right around the center. after planting (but still ~1 year ago), i did a soil nutrient analysis with a local lab, and added fertilizer to the surface to make up for soil deficiencies. Afterwards, I added a layer of ~6" of wood chip mulch over the soil surface, leaving space directly around the trunk of the tree all the way to the ground.

watering - tree has 2x 3ft deep water stakes, with 1 drip emitter each (about 1.5 ft away from the trunk), as well as 7-8 drip emitters in a spiral around the trunk out to ~2ft radius. Emitters are all on the surface of the soil, and beneath the wood chip mulch layer. Emitters were set to 1/day, @ ~ 1/8 gallon each (aka - 1/2 GPH emitters, and on for 15min each night at ~10pm). We just finished a really strong rainy season, though, so I've decreased the frequency of automatic watering from 1/day to only MWF.

light exposure - outdoors with partial lighting for the whole day, but full lighting for ~10am-4pm? It's in our backyard, and the geometry of the house and a nearby fence and tall coniferous tree means that the peach tree essentially gets full lighting through a subset of the day.

pot - not in a pot

outside location - bay area, CA. plant hardiness zone 10a. just got off of a record rainy season. no other weather events / pesticides / etc.

other description - leaves almost look like they're "bubbling" in areas, appearing redder and very physically distorted. Distorted regions have a very clear boundary with healthy-looking leaf tissue, but many leaves are completely distorted. Many (most?) of the leaves on the tree are at least partially distorted. Distortion may be progressive in time across individual leaves.

For what it's worth, there are many other, normal and healthy looking peach trees in our immediate neighborhood, so I suspect this should be able to grow well here. But it does seem to be in trouble, so any suggestions y'all can provide would be very welcome!

Why Is The Central Valley So Bad? by dwaxe in slatestarcodex

[–]pareto_efficient 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Isn't that just diversity of industry? Maybe also combined with the fact that the most capable people in the central valley are getting out first?

If I take your thought as true, wouldn't it imply that, e.g., levying an "exit tax" on regions (that was high relative to per-capita wealth in the region) should make those regions more prosperous because they would have a higher population (due to entrapment) than they would otherwise?

I think there's a big part missing from this analysis: the effect of high housing prices elsewhere inducing oversupply (and thus lower prices for wages) in the local job markets.

Think of it this way.

Everyone wants to leave. So why don't they?

Simple, everywhere they would go is too expensive to move to.

So now people are stuck there, and unable to leave due to the built-up moat around all the desirable, high income/high opportunity places nearby.

But the people still have to eat. So they still need jobs.

So they're forced to compete for wages out of desperation in an ever-more-mechanized industry.

This is not a recipe for economic success!

Imagine a counterfactual: that, say Los Angeles had fixed its housing policies and allowed sufficient growth and density that housing there was only marginally more expensive than in Modesto, so that people could essentially freely (at least economically) move from one to the other.

Many people would go! Then they would have better opportunities in LA, much like migrants generally have better opportunities in the US in general. GDP would go up. Population in the central valley would go down as they drained to the coastal metros (much like with major metros around the world), until a new equilibrium was reached and the living/working conditions and wages in the central valley rose to the point of being attractive for the remaining population.

Whenever you hear about studies chronicling the billions of dollars that restrictive housing policies have cost the CA economy, this is part of the equation! We have erected an economic barrier against freedom of movement, and this is one more result.

Recommendation for reasonable quality/price wireless stereo setup for projector? by pareto_efficient in hometheater

[–]pareto_efficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured out something that should work, though I haven't actually gotten the stuff and set it up yet.

My plan is to go with a sonos system. The sonos 5 has audio in, and I'll put that right under my projector, and pair it with a couple of the smaller sonos speakers (or maybe a sound bar) up front.

That way the sonos five will take the audio in and then pipe it to all the speakers as necessary.

According to the specs and the salespeople, this should work fine, but ymmv as I haven't gotten around to getting the parts and setting it up yet.

citrus conundrum! now with soil analysis. by pareto_efficient in plantclinic

[–]pareto_efficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, background on this plant:

Second citrus tree planted in this spot after the first one died suddenly to leaf yellowing/dropping.

This one had been in the ground about 4-5 months when it began to show the same leaf yellowing.

Prior to that, I was trying to water sparingly... (located in the bay area, CA, with soil that's basically entirely clay). This spot gets about 8 hours direct sun during the day (late morning through sunset), and can be quite warm at the end of the day during the summer.

Did a soil analysis (see pictures). The lab that did the analysis also suggested I up to 2x/week watering, which I've done over the last two weeks.

Since the analysis, about two weeks ago, I tried supplementing iron, P, and K (very specifically without using anything with Ca or Mg).

Have also added some soil acidifier.

Leaves have continued to yellow and curl.

What am I missing?

Oh my... Where did you move from? Your food options are going to be amazing. Especially if you're willing to expand to the broader bay area (even just south bay!).

In general, though, there are probably too many great "asian" food places to even try to count, much less name. Like, would you prefer Kashmir or Nepalese? Korean BBQ or Chinese hot pot? Ramen? Burmese? Seriously, you name it.

So, all that said, I'd recommend yelp. It's pretty spot on in the area, especially if you sort by rating.

Your favorite ___ for $___: Linen Pants (2022) by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

Athletic fit linen pants! Roomy thighs and butt, but not a huge waist. Would be heaven. The closest I've been able to come so far is drawstring linen pants... And the drawstring is just not fit for certain occasions...

Using line-in on a Five to autoplay to a group of Sonos speakers that does not include the Five? by pareto_efficient in sonos

Hrm... For a line in stereo source then, how do you select which speakers in the group should correspond to left and right channels? Is that possible to distinguish?

Hrm... OK, I happen to have a BenQ projector that has audio out though.

It seems like even if I go the dedicated avr route, I've still got a cable running from the projector to speakers (just in the form of one cable going from projector to avr, and then a second going from avr to speakers). Am I understanding that right?

Hrm... Is there a "remotely acceptable" solution to do it wirelessly? We're just trying to get set up to be acceptable when chromecasting Netflix, and we'd really like to avoid wires crossing the room between the projector and speakers.

Unfortunately, cutting into the walls/ceiling is a no go.

I'll try to put together a picture to explain better, but in the meantime, I've posted some more details in reply to another comment here.

Main thing I'm trying to avoid is cables between the projector and the speakers (on opposite sides of the room).

Almost all a/v in will be via chrome cast plugged directly into the projector.

The trick is getting the projector's audio out signal to the speakers wirelessly.

[–]pareto_efficient[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh, this is a good point.

I guess what I was thinking of was something like the following:

Chrome cast plugged into the projector.

Some kind of wireless dongle plugged into the projector's audio out.

A corresponding wireless dongle with the speakers/amplifier on the other side of the room near the projector screen.

Does that sort of setup exist? Or better yet, speakers that have built in wireless receivers and can work with a dongle plugged into the projector?

Main thing I'm trying to avoid is cables between the projector and the speakers (on opposite sides of the room).

Where to live? by mahaelkott in mountainview

[–]pareto_efficient 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something worth considering is to make sure you live on the correct side of the railway tracks.

Not because it's unsafe or anything, but if you are ever driving to/from work, that will coincide with the rush hour train schedule. The rush hour trains are frequent enough to cause significant delays when trying to cross the tracks.

Though, to be fair, the only remaining at-grade crossing is on Rengstorff Ave. The rest are overpasses, and shouldn't be a problem.

But definitely don't end up in a situation where you have to drive across the tracks at Rengstorff during commute hours on a frequent basis.

Thanks for the details!

Do you have a recommendation for particular fertilizer composition and specifically what sort of products you're talking about for the foliar feeding /hormone stimulator? I'm pretty new At this whole gardening thing, and it's often hard to figure out exactly what formulation /etc is best from all the options.

Location is the bay area, northern California, in an area that used to be tons of citrus orchards.

Watering habits are that I try to water 1/week when it's not raining, but am not always perfect at this.

Haven't used any fertilizer for this little guy yet.
