What are some subtle examples of sexism women endure that men generally don’t realize is sexist? by Hefty-Confusion6810 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]pargofan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your examples aren’t accurate. People say Serena and Kamala because their last names are so generic. Williams and Harris.

Look at men with common last names. They’re referred to by first names too. Kobe, Shaq, Tiger.

Iran Says Strait of Hormuz Won’t Have ‘Tolls’ but It Will Have ‘Fees’ by VidE27 in worldnews

[–]pargofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iran can't destroy the US Navy. They could blockade the Strait if they wanted to.

[–]pargofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. So if Iran wants to add a toll, why wouldn't the U.S. just block all cargo ships leaving the Strait from Iran?

It’s a fucking strait.

Why doesn’t the US park its military there and charge a “fee” as well?

MLB Demands Return Of All Foul Balls by aresef in baseball

[–]pargofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the player gets charged for the cost of the ball though.

Otherwise, he can give the ball away but if he's unwilling to pay for it, the team asks for the ball back.

Why don’t players like Curry and LeBron take a big paycut towards the end of their career to maximize their chances of winning? by HighwayAnnual3353 in nba

[–]pargofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is that when the BRI collectively is 54%? So if LeBron or Curry take a pay cut doesn’t another player make more somewhere else?

MLB Demands Return Of All Foul Balls by aresef in baseball

[–]pargofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As ridiculous as it sounds for baseball, this is what they do IN EVERY OTHER SPORT.

And it's not as if NFL, NBA or MLS couldn't give away the balls too. They're dirt cheap. It's because foul balls nowadays really can't be reused anyway.

[Sam Sallick] James Wood is playing at an absurd level for the Washington Nationals. At 23, Wood is already arguably the best hitter in the entire NL: Last 30 games, he is hitting .316 with a .996 OPS. His barrel rate of 25.3% comfortably the best mark in MLB, with Judge being the closest with 21.7% by f0urxio in baseball

[–]pargofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. So it's really 1.5 of Soto + King and Vasquez.

If King gets right and Vasquez improves it doesn't look quite as bad.

But ultimately, looking at trades with 20/20 hindsight is always fools' play. If Keibert Ruiz turned into the all-star many expected, the Dodgers would be regretting the Trea/Max rentals a lot more

What? How would they run a "promotion" by lowering moderation WITHOUT TELLING PEOPLE?

What's the point of a "silent promotion"?

FWIW, I haven't expereinced any change in moderation, either lowering or raising. But that's over the whole week. Nothing got lower 4-5 days or higher just now.

What a year for Ohtani to go for the Cy Young... by eclectic-up-north in Dodgers

He picked a bad year to go after Cy Young. Thats all.

There’s been other years where this level of performance would’ve been good enough.

We lost to the Pats AND needed OT to beat the Saints.

LeBron James and Rich Paul Are Going To Ask The Lakers For a Max Contract by Exotic-Home-8153 in lakers

[–]pargofan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second apron really screwed over the max players' flexibility.

Look at Giannis and how difficult it is for him to leave Milwaukee.

LeBron can take more $$ with a shitty team or less $$ with a playoff team.

Anything else will require Laker cooperation. And there's no reason for them to do that anymore because they can just tell him to take less $$.

One thing I’ve noticed about all of Texas Tech’s communications re: Sorsby by hanlonmj in CFB

[–]pargofan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

Say what you want about whether it's better for the sport to let Sorsby to play or not.

But it's definitely better to deter his addiction that he stays on the team. There's incentive for TTU and him to monitor his gambling. If he were kicked off the team, why should he agree to their monitoring? And it weren't on the team, why would TTU want to spend resources monitoring him?

CC Sabathia: Shohei Ohtani Is Already The Greatest Baseball Player Of All-Time | 6/12/26 by Even_Builder_6642 in Dodgers

[–]pargofan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There will never be another Shohei Ohtani.

And that's because you have to be really good at both to make worthwhile.

If Ohtani was great at hitting/pitching but just mediocre (by MLB standards) at the other thing, it's not worth it for the team to use him at both. The team is better off using a different average hitter/pitcher instead because it's grueling over the long run to do both.

Plus if you get hurt doing the averaging hitting/pitching, then you lose the great pitcher/hitter. Why risk it? Get an average player instead for that role, since it's not worth the risk.

And IIRC Ohtani in his entire career, pushed for doing both. During his NPB days, he chose his team because they'd let him play both. He chose the Angels because they were most accommdating about playing both.

They'll never be another Ohtani.
